Chapter 3 of 10
Taunting the Raid Boss
1.3k words
The warning from the Beta UI flashed a crimson overlay across Ziven’s vision, but he waved a dismissive hand through the air, as if clearing a persistent pop-up. “Passive damage? Server stability compromised?” he muttered, treating the warning like a notification about high ping. “Classic early access jank. They really need to fix their back-end before launch.”
Milda, still on her knees, kept her hands folded in deference. “My Lord, the very fabric of our world trembles beneath your wrath. Even now, the Hollow King suffers for his defiance.”
“Defiance? Milda, he’s a boss mob. His job is to have a health bar. If he’s taking damage while I’m not even in the raid instance, that’s a bug.” Ziven’s grin tightened. “An exploitable bug. This is great news. Means I don’t even have to fight him directly to lower his HP. Get me to the treasury. The sooner we clear this place of ‘loot’, the sooner we can move on to the actual endgame.”
Milda rose quickly, smoothing her skirt with tense hands. “To the Synod’s vaults, then. The High Archivist’s chambers hold the records of their most heinous acts, and the lesser vaults are often kept open for daily tithes.”
“Lesser vaults, you say? Perfect.” Ziven gestured vaguely. “Snax, you coming, boy? Or are you going to keep napping on that pile of… whatever that was?”
Snax, who had been curled up like a six-legged, obsidian-scaled cat on a crumpled banner depicting the Radiant Synod’s emblem, uncurled with a low chitter. Its many legs clicked softly on the polished floor as it trotted to Ziven’s side, nudging his hand for a scratch behind its gill-like ears. Ziven obliged with a distracted pat. “Good boy. Let’s go find some shiny things.”
They navigated the labyrinthine corridors of the Spire, each turn revealing more silk banners and carved marble. Ziven, however, ignored the artistic merit, his eyes scanning for interactive objects. He found a chest, intricately carved with sun-motifs, propped open in a rarely used antechamber. Inside, gilded cups encrusted with sunstone sat piled high. He reached in, his hand passing through the metal as if it were an illusion. A faint *thunk* echoed in his mind, a sound only he heard.

He repeated the motion, sliding cup after cup into the ethereal storage. Milda watched, slack-jawed, as objects simply vanished from his grasp. She didn't question it, merely interpreting it as another facet of his divine, unknowable power.
“My Lord, the Archival Scriptorium is this way,” she announced, guiding him into a vast, silent room lined with towering shelves of old tomes. The air hung thick with the scent of aged parchment and beeswax. “The Synod’s true wealth lies not just in coin, but in their meticulously recorded lies.”
While Ziven continued his casual pillaging – snatching ornate candelabras, jeweled censers, and even a solid silver statue of a minor prophet from pedestals – Milda moved with purpose to a hidden compartment behind a rotating bookshelf. Her fingers worked an intricate lock, whispering an old dialect until a faint *click* sounded. She pulled out a thick, leather-bound ledger, its pages crackling with age.
She began to flip through it, her brow furrowing deeper with each page. “The ‘Lustrous Coinage Act’… ‘Mana Tribute Mandate’… they call them holy tithes, My Lord, but these are not for the people’s benefit.” Her voice grew colder, edged with a rising anger. “They are siphoning. Draining the Aetherial Spires, the very mana lines that feed the core… they are bleeding Vytas. Slowly. Intentionally. To mint their accursed ‘Sun-Blessed’ coinage.” She slammed the ledger shut, a small cloud of dust puffing from its pages. “They are destroying Velska, piece by piece, to line their own coffers.”

Ziven merely grunted, more interested in whether a particularly heavy-looking pedestal could be glitched into his inventory. “Well, that explains the passive damage, then. Resource node being farmed. Not a bug, just bad game design.” He paused, then looked up, a flicker of something almost akin to annoyance crossing his face. “Still, if they’re weakening the raid boss before I even get there, that just feels cheap. Like an early nerf.”
Suddenly, a low, guttural rumble vibrated through the Spire. The ground trembled, a deep, resonant groan that seemed to eman come from the very foundations of the world. Dust sifted from the ceiling, and the colossal bookshelves swayed precariously. Milda gasped, bracing herself against a desk.
“What was that?” she cried, her voice thin with alarm.
“Earthquake,” Ziven stated, completely unfazed. He glanced around, as if checking for environmental hazards. “Probably a trigger for a mini-boss. Or a cutscene.”
The air shimmered in the center of the scriptorium, coalescing into an apparition. It was a man, tall and gaunt, with an impossibly hollow chest where his heart should have been. Cracks, like fissures in dry earth, spread across his translucent skin, and a faint amber light pulsed weakly within the empty cavity. His eyes blazed with boundless, agonizing fury. This was Vytas. The Hollow King.
“You!” Vytas’s voice was a ragged whisper, yet it boomed with an otherworldly echo, rattling the very bones of the Spire. “The anomaly! You tear at the world’s threads! The mana lines… they fray! The balance… it breaks! Stop your assault! Cease disrupting the conduits, or Velska itself will… will succumb to the void!” Molten droplets streamed down his translucent cheeks.
Ziven tilted his head, a slow, predatory smile spreading across his face. “Oh, look who decided to show up. The edgy villain. Nice entrance, ‘Hollow King’. Really selling the whole ‘suffering for the greater good’ aesthetic. Very dramatic. Are those… glowing tears? Really leaning into the angst, aren’t we?” He ignored the desperate plea, the dire warnings, treating the very real threat as a pre-fight taunt.
Vytas reeled back, his spectral form flickering, the golden light in his chest flaring with impotent rage. “You… you mock me?! You stand on the precipice of annihilation, and you *mock* me?!” His voice rose to a pained shriek, and the ground beneath them began to shudder violently once more. The massive bookshelves toppled, shattering ceramic urns and sending cascades of parchment fluttering toward the flagstones.
“Woah, woah, hold your horses, raid boss,” Ziven said, stepping forward, his hands raised in a placating gesture that held no actual intent of peace. “Too much monologue. You’re supposed to draw me in, not bore me to death with exposition. And this ‘world ending’ bit? Bit of a cliché, don’t you think? Try something fresh next time. Maybe something about your tragic backstory, or your undying love for a forgotten queen.”

Vytas let out a raw, guttural roar that wasn’t human, wasn’t even spectral. It was the sound of a world ripping apart. His ethereal hands, crackling with raw, uncontrolled energy, slammed down onto the invisible mana lines he held in place. The entire Spire shrieked, a sound of stone grinding against stone. The floor beneath Ziven and Milda buckled, then fractured with a deafening *CRACK*.
“My Lord!” Milda screamed, reaching for him, but it was too late. The ground, in a violent, desperate defense mechanism, tore itself apart, and the two of them, along with Snax, plummeted into the pitch-black abyss below the Spire.
