Chapter 4 of 10
Mount Unlocks and Mana Sewers

The wind howled a frantic, dying shriek as Ziven, Milda, and Snax plunged into the inky blackness. Stone fragments rained down around them, scraping against the unseen walls of the abyss. Milda’s scream was a thin, reedy sound, swallowed by the deafening rush of air. Her fingers clawed uselessly at empty air.
Ziven merely adjusted his grip on Snax, a slight frown touching his lips. “Falling damage is usually percentage-based,” he mused, the words ripped away by the descent. “Unless it’s a hard cap. Hope this isn’t one of those invisible wall deaths.”
Snax, a tiny, six-legged salamander moments ago, began to swell. Its sleek, obsidian scales stretched, each joint popping with an audible *thwump*. It wasn’t a gradual growth; it was a sudden, violent expansion, as if the creature had merely been holding its true form in reserve. In seconds, the abyssal reptile was no longer a pet but a leviathan, its six powerful legs splaying wide, its body an immense, leathery cushion that dwarfed even Milda. It filled the chimney, skin thickening into ribbed hide that displaced the falling draft.

“Woah,” Ziven breathed, not in fear, but in genuine surprise. “Did Snax just… turn into a mount? That’s an unexpected unlock. Didn’t see that in the patch notes.” He patted the broad, scaled skull that now rested beside him, its triple-lidded eyes glowing with an inner phosphorescence. Snax rumbled, a sound like distant thunder, its body absorbing the impact of the plummeting debris as if it were soft rain.
Milda, pinned against Snax’s enormous flank, could only gape. The air roared past them, but the creature’s bulk created a strange pocket of stillness. This wasn't natural. Nothing about Ziven was natural. A god, indeed, to command such a horror into protective servitude. “My Lord… it is a beast of the void!”
“Nah, just Snax,” Ziven corrected, digging his fingers into a thick fold of Snax's neck skin. “Good boy. Think you can slow us down a little? Don’t want to splat on the bottom, even if you do eat curses for breakfast.”
Snax let out another deep rumble, and its six powerful legs began to extend, scraping against the unseen walls of the shaft. Sparks flew, brief flashes of light in the profound darkness. The descent slowed to a controlled, grinding slide. They touched down with a gentle *thud* onto a floor of smooth, polished black stone, damp with condensation.
Glowing channels snaked across the floor and up the cavernous walls, pulsating with azure light. The air carried sharp ozone, curdled grease, and copper. Woven into the ducts were intricate sigils, burning with a faint, malevolent red. Ziven scanned them. “Looks like a mana sewer system. And these red ones? Anti-player wards. Nasty stuff, probably instant-kill if you touch them.”
Snax immediately lowered its head, its maw opening wide, and began to slurp. The red sigils, one by one, flickered and died, their malevolence vanishing as if consumed. Snax chewed with a contented *munching* sound, eyelids fluttering in rhythm. Milda watched in horrified fascination. This creature was not merely immune; it *fed* on the very essence of the Church’s destructive magic.
“Told you,” Ziven said, patting Snax’s head again. “Good boy. Best anti-magic pet ever.”
The air cleared, the metallic tang replaced by the clean scent of damp stone. They occupied a vast, subterranean reservoir, a labyrinth of pipes and lines. Some were thick as siege towers, others fine as arteries, all humming with blue radiance. Milda steadied her knees, pointing a finger at an enormous pipe inscribed with elegant, flowing script.
“These are the lifelines of the High Synodus,” she whispered, her voice low. “The source of the Spire’s power. And… and the records of its operations.” She knelt, tracing a finger over a series of smaller, etched marks on the pipe’s surface, then gasped, a sharp, choked sound. “By the Whispering Stars… these are execution orders. Taxes levied. And… and the purge of the House of Veridia, my family’s estate.” Her finger moved to a date, crisp and clear. “Ordered by High Priest Valdemar. He didn’t just seize our lands; he engineered our complete eradication for failing to meet his ‘tithe quotas’.”
Milda straightened, her fingers rigid at her sides. Her loyalty to Ziven remained absolute, but her purpose had sharpened. It wasn’t just about escaping the Synod now. It was about dismantling their entire financial infrastructure, seizing every coin, every ledger, every ounce of power that had fueled her family’s destruction.
Ziven, meanwhile, ignored her history lesson, tracking the network of pipes upward. “Hold on,” he murmured, a glint entering his eyes. “This isn’t just a sewer. This is a shortcut. See how these pipes lead straight up? They bypass the mid-tier bosses, the Inquisitors, the Arch-Deacons… all that boring trash-mob content.” He traced an invisible line in the air. “If we can get inside that main pipe… direct route to the High Priest’s chambers. Skip sequence, straight to the raid boss.”
He pulled a small, silver dagger from his belt, an ornate piece he’d looted from the Spire’s treasury, and approached the largest pipe, easily twenty feet in diameter. Its azure glow pulsed steadily. “Looks like a decent clip-through point. Just need to open it up.”
Milda stared, aghast. “My Lord! These lines carry the very essence of the sun-magic! To rupture one… it would be an act of utter devastation! The entire Spire would lose power!”
“Exactly,” Ziven grinned, his eyes gleaming with mischievous anticipation. “Chaos is my favorite debuff.”
With a swift, decisive movement, he plunged the dagger into a seam in the colossal pipe. There was a high-pitched *whine*, a sound of stressed metal, then a guttural *CLANG*. A hairline fracture appeared, expanding instantly. Pressurized blue vapor hissed, then roared outwards. The fracture blossomed into a jagged breach, and with a deafening *WHOOSH*, a jet of pure, condensed mana erupted, blasting towards the ceiling with incredible force.
“Hop on, Snax!” Ziven yelled over the din, already scrambling onto the beast’s broad back. “Pipeline elevator unlocked!”
Snax, surprisingly agile for its size, lumbered forward, positioning itself directly in the path of the upward torrent. The force of the eruption caught them, lifting the colossal creature and its riders effortlessly into the air. They shot upwards, the pipe walls blurring past, the rushing mana a vibrant, blinding blue.

Ziven scrolled past the notification with a shrug. “Called it.”
They ascended through the flue, the roar of the mana blast vibrating through Snax's ribs. Finally, the opening of the pipe loomed above, revealing a vast, dimly lit chamber. With a final surge, Snax burst out of the flue, landing with a heavy scrape on polished obsidian floor. The hall stretched into vaulted darkness, hung with Synod banners, but not a single sentry walked the perimeter. They had completely bypassed the mid-section.
“See, Milda? Easy peasy,” Ziven began, turning to offer a triumphant smirk. He stopped. Before them, materializing from shimmering motes of light, stood three figures. Their armor was burnished gold, their helms faceless, and from their backs unfurled wings of pure, ethereal flame. In their hands, long, curved blades burned with the same intense fire. The Seraphim. The High Priest’s personal guard. And they had teleported directly into their path.
