Chapter 2 of 10
Pathing Glitches and Holy Auras
1.1k words
A collective roar ripped through the plaza, ten thousand voices fusing into a single battering ram of sacred hostility. The ground trembled beneath the charge of the Sun-Veiled Covenant. Sunlight glinted off polished steel, a blinding ripple of motion. Their formation, a disciplined wedge led by a truly colossal figure in gold-enameled plate, was flawless. They thundered forward, a living avalanche of consecrated retribution, their lances lowering in unison.
Ziven watched, unimpressed. His gaze flickered past the charging knights, past the intricate carvings of the plaza, to the ground beneath their feet. A long, crimson carpet, unfurled from the base of the cathedral steps, stretched like a blood-red river through the plaza, ending abruptly at a monumental fountain depicting a triumphant Archon battling a seven-headed serpent. Every single crusader, from the hulking Commander to the rank-and-file, adhered to its scarlet boundaries with unnatural precision.

“Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me,” Ziven muttered, a grin spreading across his face. “They’re literally following the red carpet.” He sidestepped a confused Milda, who remained kneeling on the flags, frozen in rigid reverence. “They hard-coded the movement paths? What kind of budget game is this?”
He scanned the cathedral’s interior. His attention locked onto a massive, intricately woven ceremonial drape depicting the Radiant Synod’s founding, hanging like a colossal banner from an ornate gilded beam above the main archway. The fabric hung directly over the crimson carpet, its lower tassels brushing the stone floor just where the holy knights were about to breach the nave.
“Snax, hold this,” Ziven commanded, shoving a handful of gleaming coins he’d pilfered from a high priest’s pouch into the salamander’s mouth. Snax swallowed them with a happy gurgle.
Then, with the casual grace of someone swatting a fly, Ziven leaped. He didn’t use magic, didn’t invoke some arcane power. He simply jumped, grabbing onto the brass rod supporting the heavy woven hanging. The crossbar, designed to withstand centuries, groaned under his weight. With a sharp yank, he ripped the entire support brackets from the stone. Dust and ancient mortar rained down as the immense fabric plummeted, dropping across the cathedral entrance.
Outside, the high commander, a mountain of muscle named Arch-Marshal Kellen, let out a guttural war-cry. He was the first. His armored boots struck the hem of the fallen weave just as it settled. His momentum carried him forward, but instead of running over the fabric, he seemed to… phase through it. One moment, he was charging, lance aimed directly at Ziven. The next, he was gone, a ripple in the fabric of reality.
Then the plaza floor opened. Not physically, but in a sickening visual glitch. Kellen, along with the first few dozen vanguard riders, didn't pitch into the pool. They simply… clipped. Their bodies twisted, stretched, and snapped back, appearing for a split second within the stone basin of the monument, only to be immediately propelled upwards, back onto the spot they’d just vacated, then clipped through again, endlessly. An infinite descent loop, their screams stuttering in rapid staccato.

Snax, meanwhile, had waddled up to the edge of the fountain, his six eyes gleaming. The air around the trapped soldiers shimmered with a yellow mist—their holy auras, a tangible manifestation of their celestial wards. Snax extended a long, prehensile tongue. *Slurp.*
One knight's luminescent shroud vanished, replaced by a faint, sickly grey. The man’s face, frozen in an endless loop of terror, softened, then went utterly slack, his eyes dimming. *Slurp. Slurp. Slurp.*
The sacred mantles of the vanguard, the very meat of their warding shields, vanished down the salamander's throat. Snax slurped them up like a child drinking spilled juice, occasionally pausing to burp out a puff of pure, sparkling light.
“There you go, Snax, get all that high-tier buff juice,” Ziven chuckled, watching the chaos unfold. The remaining ranks, halted abruptly by the impossible spectacle, looked on in stunned silence, their charge broken. Their invincible Arch-Marshal and his elite guard were trapped, glitched into an eternal, impotent loop, their sacred power siphoned away by an abyssal beast.
Milda, who had cautiously risen, stared at the scene with a mixture of profound awe and utter bewilderment. Her gaze darted from the looping warriors to Ziven, then to Snax, who was contentedly licking his snout. “A celestial… judgment,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “You cast them into the abyssal maw of the Archon, Lord Glitch. You… you drain their very essence.” She moved closer, falling to her knees once more, but this time with a fierce, almost manic resolve. “My Lord, I am Princess Milda of the Sunken Isles. A captive. A pawn. But I know this Spire. I know its secrets. Its weaknesses. Allow me to be your guide. Your voice in this realm of the deluded.”
Ziven finally turned his full attention to her, a flicker of interest in his eyes. “A guide, huh? You know the raid map?”
Milda nodded fervently, misunderstanding his jargon. “I do, my Lord. I know the routes the Synod takes, the locations of their sacred relics, their hidden passages. Their greatest pride, the ‘Sun-Veil Vaults’ beneath the Elder Temple, are said to hold artifacts of unimaginable power. But they are empty, my Lord, for the Synod is greedy beyond measure. They seek the one true relic, the only treasure that matters.”
Her voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper. “They seek the World Core. The very heart of Velska, hidden deep beneath the Spire. They believe it is a weapon, a source of ultimate power to crush their enemies. But it is not. It is the lifeblood of our floating lands, kept stable by the cursed hands of Vytas, the Hollow King. They plan to take it, to drain it. To kill him. And when they do… Velska will shatter into the abyss.”
Ziven leaned forward, his face sharpening with a predatory grin. “The World Core? Legendary loot? And some ‘Hollow King’ is the raid boss guarding it?” His mind raced, calculating optimal paths, potential drops, and the fastest way to get to the end-game content. “Speed-run,” he murmured, a wide, dangerous smile spreading across his face. “We’re speed-running this dungeon. Get me to the core, Milda.”
