The low drone vibrating through the marble platform beneath Ziven was frankly grating. He blinked, the bright, oppressive light of the grand hall coalescing into a shimmering, nauseating halo above a dozen robed figures. They circled a raised marble altar, where Ziven lay, his limbs strangely heavy, a faint, iridescent glow tracing intricate patterns along his skin. His first thought, an immediate, unshakeable instinct, was ‘Unskippable cutscene. Seriously?’ [Welcome, Chosen. Your Soul-Binding Ritual has begun!] Oh, *this* again. The ‘Beta UI’ had been nagging him with messages like this since he’d inexplicably woken up in this sun-blasted, oversized VR game. He sat up, the clerics' chanting sputtering to a confused halt. The light tracing his skin vanished. “Mortals,” Ziven said, his voice flat, his gaze sweeping over their shocked faces. One elderly priest, his face a roadmap of severe wrinkles, clutched a glowing crystal staff. “You’re doing it wrong. The binding ritual for a Chosen of the Sun-Veiled Covenant usually involves, like, a ten-minute exposition dump from a generic quest giver, then a ‘press X to consent’ prompt. This, uh, this is just harassment.” Princess Milda, chained to a column draped in heavy banners woven with symbols of golden suns, flinched. Her gaze remained pinned to Ziven. The young woman, barely out of her teens, had seen countless souls broken by the Synod’s forced ‘Awakening’ rituals. Each one ended in agony, a new slave-hero for their tyrannical crusade. Yet, this man, this pale figure, spoke of it like a minor inconvenience. His utter defiance was a chasm in her understanding. “Silence, blasphemer!” the elder officiant, High Seer Ormyr, shrieked, his voice cracking. “You have been selected by the Radiant Synod! You will serve the light! Now, submit to sacred will and accept your holy burden!” Ormyr gestured with his staff, and the other acolytes resumed their drone, their voices rising in a desperate crescendo. The iridescent patterns flared across Ziven’s skin once more, tighter, almost painful. “Look, I’m going to be honest with you, chief,” Ziven said, ignoring the escalating magic. He flexed, feeling the familiar, high-level character stats humming beneath the surface. “This is a forced tutorial segment. And I *hate* forced tutorial segments. Just give me the lore dump, the basic controls, and let me get to the grinding. I have legendary vaults to loot and a log-out button to find.” He stood, the marble slab groaning under his weight. The clerics choked on their cadence, mouths slack. They expected resistance, screaming, pleas for mercy. Not a casual conversation about game mechanics. Ziven strode to the edge of the altar, examining the pristine, polished marble floor. He dug a finger into the surface, his maxed-out strength carving a shallow, perfect line. The floor, meant to withstand centuries of devout footfalls, yielded like soft clay. “Honestly, this whole ‘Chosen’ schtick is just a glorified escort quest, isn’t it?” he mused, tracing another line. “Probably involves some low-level fetch quests, then fighting a couple of reskinned goblins before the actual boss fight. Waste of my time.” He finished his carving with a flourish, stepping back to admire his work. A crude, lopsided smiley face, a circle with two dots for eyes and a curving line for a mouth, now marred the sacred floor of the Spire of Sanctity. An echoing *thrum* shook the hall. The air grew heavy, thick with the scent of ozone and something ancient and foul. A jagged crack, black as pitch, ripped through the center of Ziven’s smiley face. It spiderwebbed across the floor, glowing with an unholy violet light. The robed celebrants shrieked, scrambling backward across the dais. From the void, something *pulled*. A massive, six-legged creature slithered into existence, its scales the color of congealed shadow, its eyes burning with malevolent emerald light. It was a beast of pure abyss, fanged and clawed, its body rippling with barely contained chaotic energy. It let out a guttural hiss that scraped against the very fabric of reality. Milda gasped, pressing her shoulders against the stone column. This was an Abyssal Fiend, an entity of pure entropy summoned only by forbidden rites. It was a harbinger of untold destruction. Yet, Ziven, the man who called himself a ‘beta tester,’ simply crouched down. “Oh, hey there, little fella,” Ziven cooed, extending a hand. The abyssal salamander, which had been preparing to unleash a torrent of soul-shattering curses, froze. Its emerald eyes swiveled, focusing on Ziven’s outstretched fingers. It sniffed, a low rumble emanating from its throat, and then, impossibly, nudged its enormous head into his palm. “You like head scratches, don’t you?” Ziven murmured, running his hand over its surprisingly smooth, cool scales. “Yeah, you do. I’m gonna call you Snax. Because you look like you eat… snacks. Or curses. Probably both.” [Achievement Unlocked: sequence_break_01] [Description: You summoned an eldritch abomination with a smiley face. The Radiant Synod's ancient rituals are now significantly less effective. +100 Chaos Points.] High Seer Ormyr staggered forward, skin pale as curdled milk. “You… you *tamed* a Tenebrous Wyrmling with a child’s doodle? Impossible! This is no sacred grace! This is… madness!” “Oh, those are curses?” Ziven said, looking at Snax, who was now rubbing its head vigorously against his side, practically purring. The creature turned its head towards Ormyr, its emerald eyes narrowing. From the glowing crystal staff, a tendril of golden, binding energy shot out, aimed directly at Ziven. Before it could reach him, Snax darted forward, its six legs blurring, and *bit* the golden tendril. There was a sound like shattering glass, and then Snax swallowed, letting out a satisfied burp. Milda, watching the abyssal beast consume the Synod’s sacred magic like a dog gobbling a treat, felt her worldview fracture. All her life, she had been taught the Synod was infallible, their power unassailable. Yet, this man, this Ziven, treated it all as a joke, casually conjured a world-ending beast, and named it like a pet. Her mind, reeling from the sheer, unadulterated blasphemy, could only interpret one thing: this wasn’t just a heretic. This was a god. A god of ruin, come to dismantle the very heavens. She fell to her knees, bowing her head deeply. “My Lord of Entropy,” she whispered, her voice trembling with awe and terror. “Your divine wisdom shines through your cruel, chaotic grace.” Ziven barely registered her. He was too busy giving Snax a thorough belly rub, the salamander wriggling in delight. “Good boy, Snax. You’re a very good boy. That’s some high-tier curse absorption, isn’t it?” He stood, patting the docile beast. “Alright, folks,” he announced, turning back to the acolytes, who were now openly whimpering. “Tutorial’s over.” He strode towards the immense, gilded doors of the cathedral, Snax trotting happily at his heels. With a single, casual kick, the colossal doors, reinforced with arcane wards and ancient blessings, splintered inward with a deafening crack. Beyond, the blinding Velskan sun illuminated a vast plaza. And arrayed across it, shoulder to shoulder, a sea of polished armor and glinting lances, stood the Radiant Synod’s elite fighting force: ten thousand Paladins of the Sun-Veiled Covenant, their blades already drawn, their eyes fixed on the desecrated hall.
