Chapter 8 of 10

Meltdown

The floor shuddered, a deep, resonant hum vibrating up through the soles of Ryzalia’s boots. Dust motes, caught in the harsh stage lights, danced like agitated spirits. The colossal core behind Kylian pulsed an angry, unstable crimson, its hum escalating into a piercing shriek that clawed at the eardrums. Superheated air rolled across the stage in sheets, carrying the sharp tang of scorched copper and blistered paint. Panic erupted. A high-pitched, collective scream tore through the gala hall. Socialites, moments ago frozen in horror, surged backward, trampling over each other, their designer clothes snagging and tearing. The gilded chandeliers above swayed precariously, shedding crystalline dust. The security drones, programmed for crowd control, emitted frantic warning sirens, their red lights flashing wildly as they struggled to contain the stampede. “The containment vault!” Ryzalia yelled over the din, her voice raw. She shoved Kylian’s parents aside as they stumbled, trying to flee. Her gaze locked onto the reinforced plasteel doors of the vault, now clamped tight by a thick magnetic lock, at the far end of the stage. “Isken, clear a path!” Isken, releasing Kylian to collapse in a heap, moved with a sudden, devastating efficiency. He didn't push. He formed a wedge, his powerful frame cutting through the frantic tide of bodies, his arms extended, creating a narrow corridor for Ryzalia. “Move! Get back!” he barked, his voice carrying surprising authority over the chaos. He didn’t look at Ryzalia, but his movements were synchronized with hers, a silent pact in the unfolding disaster. She ran, the vibrations from the core’s accelerating instability threatening to throw her off balance. Each step felt like a gamble. The air grew thicker, hotter, making it difficult to draw breath. She reached the blast doors, slapping her palm against the cool metal, then slamming her fist against the mag-lock’s interface panel. Nothing. The seal held, impenetrable, humming with dormant power. “Nimra!” Ryzalia screamed, pressing her face against the thick plasteel. “Can you hear me? Nimra, the override!” Inside the room, the air hung thick with static. Nimra Shale lay sprawled on the gridded floor, a thin trickle of blood from her temple staining her platinum hair. Her tailored suit was scorched, her body aching from the overload pulse Kylian had hit her with. The roar of the core was deafening, a physical pressure on her chest. Its crimson glow cast jagged shadows across the control pedestal and the hacking rig Ryzalia had given her, now lying uselessly near the primary station. With a guttural cry, Nimra forced herself to move. Every muscle screamed in protest. She crawled, dragging her bruised body across the vibrating floor, her fingers scraping against the grating. The smell of burning insulation was sharp, acrid. She reached the terminal, her vision blurring, and saw the station's manual bypass housing. Gritting her teeth, she tore at the cover. Sparks showered her hands as she pulled the live wires, ignoring the searing pain. Her hand trembled as she located the physical lock, a small, recessed button that required a direct current surge to break the mag-seal. She grabbed a stripped wire, its exposed copper glowing faintly, and jammed it into the port. A blinding flash broke across the metal, and high voltage bit into her arm, snapping across her shoulders. Her teeth rattled. Her vision went white. She screamed, a raw, desperate sound, as her muscles spasmed. The reinforced vault doors groaned, a deep, grinding sound of metal releasing. A weak, green light blinked on the panel: *Magnetic Seal Broken*. Nimra collapsed, gasping, her body convulsing, but her eyes, wide and unfocused, found the hacking rig. With her last ounce of strength, she nudged it with her foot, pushing it into the terminal’s main input port. She had done it. Outside, Ryzalia felt the frame shudder violently. A faint *thunk* echoed as the magnetic field gave way. She twisted the manual override handle, pulling with all her might. The heavy plasteel yielded, swinging inward with a screech of tortured alloy to reveal the core’s rhythmic, crimson glare. She scrambled inside, her eyes immediately finding Nimra’s still form, and the rig’s blinking light. “Nimra!” she cried, but there was no time. The core’s roar was a living thing now, consuming the air, shaking the very foundations of the tower. The floor beneath them buckled. Emergency klaxons blared, a desperate, hopeless sound. Ryzalia threw herself at the terminal, her hands flying across the holographic interface, calling up the complex mathematical sequence that would purge the core. Her fingers hammered in the kill-code that would save the Rust-Steppes. The station’s casing grew searing hot under her touch, blistering her skin, but she didn’t flinch. Every line of code, every equation, was burned into her memory. This was her legacy. Her revenge. Behind her, the stampede intensified. Isken, a bulwark of calm amidst the storm, planted his feet, pushing against the wall of terrified socialites. He absorbed punches, shoves, and frantic pleas, his gaze fixed on Ryzalia, a silent sentinel protecting her. He would not let them reach her, not now, not when she was so close. Ryzalia was on the final string of code, the last critical sequence. Just a few more digits, a few more symbols, and the weave would lock down. The holographic display flared white, heat scalding her palms. She pushed through the pain, her eyes narrowed in fierce concentration. Then, a deafening concussion ripped through the air. The blast doors, already stressed, tore inward with a thunderous roar, showering sheared bolts past Ryzalia’s head. A figure stepped through the swirling dust and smoke, his silhouette framed by the chaos of the gala hall. Voldir Hext. His face was a mask of cold fury, his eyes fixed on Kylian, who lay whimpering on the stage floor. In his hand, a heavy plasma pistol, its barrel glowing with an ominous blue light, was aimed squarely at Kylian’s head. “Step away from the terminal, Ryzalia,” he commanded, his voice a low, dangerous growl. “Let the bastard burn.”
