Chapter 9 of 10

The Math of Mercy

622 words

“Step away from the terminal, Ryzalia,” Voldir commanded, his voice a low, dangerous growl. “Let the bastard burn.” The red glare from the unstable core pulsed, painting Voldir’s silhouette in stark, jagged shadows. His sidearm hummed, a deadly counterpoint to the core’s frantic thrum. Kylian pushed himself up onto an elbow on the floorboards, sweat pooling in the hollow of his collarbone as he stared at Voldir Hext. Ryzalia’s hands burned, the interface glass searing her fingertips as she reached for the terminal. Voldir's heavy iron muzzle was aimed directly at Kylian’s head, just beyond her, and Kylian’s death meant the core would overload. The overload would reduce the Rust-Steppes to scorched slag, wiping out every scrap dealer and foundry hand who had kept her alive. She stepped off the runner mat. She planted her heels directly between Voldir's gun and Kylian's temple, her shoulder blades shielding her brother. “No,” she stated, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. “I won’t.” Voldir leveled his stance. “You will not defy me, girl. Not for him.” “Not for him,” Ryzalia agreed, a cold, hard edge to her tone. “For the Rust-Born. For every person in the Rust-Steppes who will die if this core detonates. I will not let them burn for your vengeance, Voldir.” Static snapped across the floorplates. Voldir took one measured pace forward, lifting his sightline fractionally. “Get out of the way, Ryzalia,” he said. “Or I will move you.” A crisp click echoed across the metal decking. Isken Varga stepped onto the perimeter of the wrecked platform, his matte-black carbine pointed straight at Voldir's breastbone. “You will do no such thing, Voldir,” Isken said, his tone flat and dry over the alarm horns. Voldir’s head snapped sideways, his aim steady. “You betray me, Isken? For this girl? For that worm?” “I betray no one who doesn’t deserve it,” Isken replied, his finger resting lightly on the trigger guard. “Ryzalia saves lives. You would end them. If you aim that weapon at her again, Voldir, I put a slug through your ribs.” The remaining security guards along the perimeter went rigid, fingers twitching above their holsters. Voldir weighed the space between Ryzalia's unblinking stare and Isken's locked elbows. The billionaire's fingers loosened against his grip. A strange, heavy silence descended upon the stage, punctuated only by the core’s frantic whine and the distant wails of emergency sirens approaching the spire. Voldir’s eyes narrowed, searching their faces for a crack, a moment of hesitation. There was none. The thermal glow in his barrel chilled to dull slate as he dropped his arm toward the fractured tiles. “Finish it, then, artificer,” Voldir grunted, his voice devoid of its earlier venom, replaced by a grudging, almost bewildered respect. “Lest we all burn.” Ryzalia spun back to the display, dragging split knuckles across the glass to key the closing logic chain. The core’s violent red pulse shuddered and contracted. The high-pitched whine flattened into a steady hum. Overhead projections cleared of fault strings, snapping into green text: ‘STABILIZED. OPERATIONAL. SAFE.’ Boots cracked against porcelain tile as municipal marshals breached the double entries, rifles raised. Commissioner Renna crossed the threshold first, her insignia gleaming under the emergency beacons. Kylian scrambled upright against the pedestal, his voice cracking as he pointed toward Ryzalia and Isken. “Arrest them! They sabotaged my core! They caused this!” Commissioner Renna raised a gloved hand to halt the squad. “Is that your statement, Morcrest?” From behind the cable housing, Nimra Shale pulled herself upright, dirt streaking her split lip as she raised a palm-sized transmitter. “Perhaps this clarifies matters,” Nimra rasped. She clicked the play toggle, sending Kylian’s recorded voice spilling through the hall’s acoustic grid and into every squad radio.
