Chapter 7 of 10

The Core of the Lie

1.1k words

Kylian’s arrogant smile faltered, replaced by a flicker of confusion as Ryzalia’s words echoed through the immense hall. He stared at her, then at the cameras, a vein throbbing at his temple. “You dare—” he began, but the booming voice of the broadcast’s announcer cut him off. “Ladies and gentlemen, the moment you’ve all been waiting for! The grand unveiling of the Morcrest Kinetic-Weave Core, a triumph of ingenuity, brought to you by the incomparable Kylian Morcrest!” Spotlights flared, bathing Kylian in a blinding white glow. He seized the distraction, his face snapping back into its familiar mask of gilded confidence. He turned his back to Ryzalia, dismissing her with a contemptuous wave. The crowd roared, the sound deafening even through the Hext Spire’s comm-link filtration. Kylian strode towards the colossal core, a gleaming, multi-faceted engine of spiraling torque that dominated the center of the stage. Its polished plating reflected the array of light-projected panels that floated around it, displaying complex radiation readings and projected power outputs. He placed a hand on its smooth surface, his voice dripping with theatrical pride. “My friends, what you see before you is more than just a power source. It is the culmination of years of relentless dedication, groundbreaking innovation, and a singular vision to uplift Previa to unprecedented heights!” He paused, letting the cheers swell before continuing, “Soon, with a simple command, this core will hum to life, forever solidifying the Morcrest legacy and ensuring a brighter tomorrow for all!” He spread his arms wide, encompassing the adoring crowd, his eyes shining with self-congratulation. His parents, positioned in the front row, beamed with pride, oblivious to the fact their financial accounts were now skeletal. Ryzalia watched him, her gaze like flint. Isken, standing beside her, leaned in. “Nimra confirmed the override frequency is stable,” he murmured, his voice a low rumble. “Now.” Ryzalia’s hand, unseen by the cameras, dipped into the folds of her opulent, dark gown. Her fingers brushed against the micro-transmitter she had spent hours calibrating. A faint click, almost inaudible even to her, confirmed its activation. On stage, Kylian raised his hand dramatically, his finger hovering over the core’s primary interface. “And now, for the historic moment!” he declared, his voice rising to a crescendo. “Initiating Kinetic-Weave activation sequence!” His finger pressed down. The light-projected displays surrounding the core flickered, a cascade of numbers and diagnostic figures beginning to scroll rapidly. The crowd held its collective breath. The stage lights pulsed with anticipation. Then, an anomaly. A subtle ripple distorted the sleek corporate branding on the main optic display. The familiar Morcrest sigil glitched, dissolving into a shimmering static. Kylian frowned, his perfect show momentarily interrupted. “A minor calibration issue,” he chuckled, waving a dismissive hand. “Technological marvels demand precision, after all.” The static cleared, but the image that replaced it was not his expected power output graph. Instead, a faded, handwritten page appeared, its edges crinkled, covered in looping script and intricate geometric diagrams. It was a page from Ryzalia’s childhood journal, emblazoned with the youthful scrawl of her name at the top: *Ryzalia Morcrest – My First Flux Calculus. 7 years old.* The murmurs began, a low, confused hum through the audience. Kylian’s face tightened. He jabbed at the interface again, but the image remained. Another page materialized beside the first, then another, then another, spreading across every floating screen in the hall, expanding beyond the stage and into the vast, open spaces of the Zenith atrium, visible to thousands of onlookers. Childhood drawings of spiraling dynamo cores mingled with complex differential equations written in a neat, precise hand. A small, crude drawing of a girl with wild hair and a focused expression. “What is this?” Kylian hissed, his voice finally losing its practiced calm. He frantically swiped at the controls, but the images were locked in place, vibrant and undeniable. Then came the devastating blow. A new set of documents appeared, starkly contrasted against the innocent scrawl of her youth. These were official Morcrest R&D reports, dated years later, bearing Kylian’s name as the lead artificer. Side by side, Ryzalia’s original proofs from her childhood journals were displayed next to Kylian’s reports. The mathematical identities, the unique conduit-flow equations, even the specific flux-density notations – they were identical. Kylian’s reports were blatant, word-for-word plagiarisms of her earliest, most foundational work, down to a tiny, unique notation error Ryzalia had scribbled out and corrected on her own page, only for Kylian’s report to reproduce the uncorrected error before its own clumsy correction. A collective gasp tore through the hall, a raw, visceral sound of disbelief. The Morcrest parents’ faces, once beaming, crumpled into horrified masks of recognition and dawning shame. Their son, the golden boy, the genius of Previa, was a fraud. The evidence was irrefutable, emblazoned across the entire Zenith District for all to see. Kylian stared at the screens, his own lie reflected back at him a thousandfold. His mouth hung open, his stare blank and hollow for a single, agonizing second. Then, a primal scream ripped from his throat, a sound of pure, unadulterated rage and humiliation. His hand plunged inside his tailored suit jacket, emerging with a sleek, chrome shock-blade. Its tip crackled with contained voltage. He lunged. Not at the screens, not at the core, but directly at Ryzalia, his face a mask of murderous fury. “You absolute bitch!” Before he could take a second step, a blur of dark fabric intercepted him. Isken Varga, swift as a shadow, moved between them. His arm shot out, catching Kylian’s blade-wielding arm in a vice-like grip. A sharp, sickening *crack!* echoed through the suddenly silent hall. Kylian shrieked, a high, desperate sound as his arm bent at an unnatural angle. The shock-blade clattered uselessly to the stage. Isken, without releasing his grip, twisted Kylian’s wrist and drove his knee into the small of Kylian’s back. The golden boy collapsed, his injured arm dangling, his face contorted in agony. “You broke my arm!” Kylian choked out, spitting crimson onto the polished stage, his body shaking with pain and impotent fury. He looked up at Ryzalia, a grotesque grin spreading across his bloodied face. The massive Kinetic-Weave Core behind him, forgotten in the chaos, pulsed. Its steady, confident blue light flickered, replaced by an angry, unstable red. The air around it began to thrum with a sharp, ozone-heavy heat. Kylian’s laughter, ragged and broken, echoed through the silence. He raised his head, his eyes burning with a manic glee. “You proved it’s yours, sister,” he rasped, coughing through his pain. “But I scrambled the activation cipher—we’re all going to burn.”
