Unintentional Hero of the Abyss

Cain Vance is a lazy, risk-averse coward who only wants to retire in peace. His plans are shattered when he is forcibly bonded with the 'Hero's Burden System' - a chaotic, sentient entity that actively penalizes him for being heroic and rewards him with god-tier power only when he acts like a selfish, scheming scoundrel. Thrust into a treacherous world where demonic rifts threaten to tear humanity apart, Cain must navigate manipulative church factions, deadly monster tides, and a highly suspicious public that keeps misinterpreting his cowardly, self-serving actions as strokes of profound genius. As the stakes escalate and genuine threats loom on the horizon, Cain's survival depends on his ability to fake his way to the top. To save his own skin, he must reluctantly pretend to be the legendary savior he never wanted to be, all while his bizarre system continuously threatens to blow his cover and ruin his peaceful life.
