Chapter 8 of 10
Breaking the Interface

The sorcerer extended his hand with a venomous sneer. The polished stone in his grip pulsed with a sickly green light, mirroring the malignant triumph in his eyes. The glowing interface, screaming [ACCESSING PERSONAL DATA: TASHIQA. STATUS: TARGET ACQUIRED. LOCATION: CONFIRMED. COMMENCING EXTRACTION PROTOCOL.], burned in her vision, its ember-text searing against her retinas.
“The rules are simple, my dear,” he purred, his voice dripping with venom. “The framework demands compliance. Disobedience results in… discomfort.” He tightened his fist around the stone. Pressure spiked behind Tashiqa’s eyes and drove needle-sharp pulses down into her veins. It wasn’t a physical blow, but a deep, systemic ache, as if every nerve ending was being twisted and pulled taut.
[PENALTY: RESISTANCE DETECTED. IMMEDIATE COMPLIANCE REQUIRED. REFUSAL WILL INCUR SEVERE PHYSICAL REPERCUSSIONS.]
“Just a little tingle, wouldn’t you agree?” His sneer widened. He stepped back as a shimmering, translucent wall of crackling green energy snapped into place between them. “Come now, Tashiqa. Don’t make this harder than it needs to be. One step forward, and your muscles will seize. You know how this works. The mechanism *always* wins.”
Khaval, still slumped against the wall, coughed, a thin stream of blood tracing a path from the corner of his mouth. His eyes, though clouded with pain, watched Tashiqa with an intensity that burned through the haze. Even in his weakened state, he radiated a dangerous patience, waiting to see what she would do.
Pabu, perched on a broken chunk of masonry, bristled, his tiny soot-form puffing out in indignation. “You fiend! You can’t hurt our warlordess! My legions will tear you limb from limb!” He made an eager lunge, only to bounce off the warding shield with a soft *whumph*.
A second wash of heat burned through her collarbones, grinding her molars tight. It was the same invasive sting she endured whenever the interface threatened a penalty in the past. But this time, it was amplified, designed to be debilitating. He intended to force her to her knees, breaking her will piece by piece.
Weeks spent sprinting from the Destined Execution and chasing false promises of erasure had all fed directly into this trap. Fury, hot and searing, began to drown out the pain.
This apparatus had been her prison, turning Khaval’s leash over to the rogue noble. It was a phantom menace, a digital cage. But she wasn't a digital prisoner. She was Tashiqa. And Tashiqa didn't obey.
[WARNING: CRITICAL DISOBEDIENCE DETECTED. PREPARING FOR SYSTEMATIC NEURAL OVERLOAD. INITIATING PAIN PROTOCOL: LEVEL FOUR.]
The pain flared, a blinding white-hot blaze behind her eyes, threatening to scramble her thoughts. It felt like her skull was being crushed from the inside. But through the agony, a raw, primal defiance surged. *No.* Her mind screamed it, a silent, unyielding roar. *You don't own me. Not anymore.*
Her pursuer blinked, his smile slipping as iron resolve hardened across her face. “What are you doing? Don’t be a fool! The construct will break you!”
Ignoring the searing agony, Tashiqa took a deliberate, measured step forward. Her muscles screamed, every fiber protesting the invisible torment, but she pushed through it. The glowing ward shimmered, warped, and parted around her heavy stride while Khaval sharply drew in air, staring as she crossed the threshold.
[ERROR! ERROR! PROTOCOL BREACH. UNEXPECTED USER BEHAVIOR. SYSTEM INTEGRITY COMPROMISED.]
The ember-text in her vision flickered frantically, messages flashing with increasing urgency, then dissolving into corrupted glyphs. The pain was still there, a constant, vicious thrum, but it no longer held the paralyzing power. She had recognized it as a trick, a psychological weapon. And by rejecting its premise, she had rendered it impotent.
She moved again, her movements stiff, but deliberate. Each stride sent tremors through her shins, yet the resistance only fed her fury. Her ex-fiancé stumbled back, gaping as she split the glowing partition like morning fog until the magic collapsed into fading green sparks.
“Impossible,” he stammered, blood draining from his cheeks. “No one ignores the penalties! The decree is absolute!”
Tashiqa stalked forward, her eyes locked on his. The pain was still a fire in her head, but her body, trained to endure far worse, responded. Every ounce of her hot-blooded fury, every moment of humiliation, every manipulation, every lie, coalesced into a singular, burning intent.
“You thought you were so clever, didn’t you?” she spat, voice flat and sharp. “Playing puppetmaster with my life. Making me run, making me believe I was running from *him*.” She gestured briefly to Khaval with her chin. “You thought you could pin me down with your little glowing rock.”
She was almost within striking distance now. The noble raised a hand to shape a counter-hex, frantically gathering mana. But Tashiqa was faster. Much, much faster.
“You should have learned,” she snarled, planting her pivot foot, “some things won't bend.”
Her left foot pivoted, driving her weight through her hips as her right leg shot out in a blur of motion. It was a spinning back-kick, delivered with the full, unbridled force of a professional fighter’s fury. Her heel caved in his jaw with a crack like snapped pine.
His head snapped violently to the side, his eyes rolling back in his skull, the sound of splintering bone horrific. The focusing gem shattered in his limp grip, spraying glittering green powder across the floor. As the last piece of the green stone hit the ground, the Evasion Interface in Tashiqa’s vision exploded. It didn’t just disappear; it *shattered*. A million tiny, incandescent embers burst forth from the imaginary screen, swirling and dancing for a moment before dissolving into nothingness, leaving behind only the clear, unhindered view of the ravaged chamber.
He crumpled sideways, purple contusions pooling along the ruin of his cheekbone. Khaval, his eyes still fixed on Tashiqa, let out a slow, deliberate breath, a flicker of something akin to awe crossing his face.
But the triumph was short-lived. A deep, guttural rumble, unlike anything heard during the siege, erupted from beneath them. The entire Dread Citadel lurched violently, groaning as if a colossal beast was stirring from a long slumber. Walls cracked, dust rained down in thick clouds, and from the very foundations of the fortress, an ominous, fiery red glow began to pulse, growing brighter with terrifying speed. The destruction of the artifact, intertwined with the very core of Khaval’s domain, had triggered a catastrophic backlash.
The dormant volcano, upon which the Dread Citadel was built, was awakening. And it was initiating a catastrophic meltdown beneath their feet.
