Chapter 7 of 10

The Vanguard Strikes

1.3k words

The obsidian spike lodged deep into the ancient masonry beside Khaval’s shoulder, a black blossom of corrupted power bleeding into the stone. A thin line of crimson painted his tunic where the shard had grazed him, but his attention remained on the gaping hole in the window, where the night wind howled like a hungry beast. “Remarkable,” Khaval muttered, his voice a low thrum despite the chaos, “They’ve found a way to suppress my connection to the dread-veins. A localized nullification ward, perhaps?” He raised a hand, a tendril of his usual enveloping darkness flickering weakly, then collapsing like a snuffed flame. His brow furrowed, a rare display of vulnerability. [WARNING: Sovereign’s Primal Ward integrity compromised. Hostile energy detected. Threat level: Critical.] “Poison,” Tashiqa hissed, her gaze on the black ichor weeping from the spike. She knew that feeling, a cold internal dread, from her kickboxing days facing opponents who’d resort to cheap tricks. This wasn’t just physical damage; it was an esoteric assault. “It’s draining you. Your magic…” Before Khaval could respond, the reinforced door to his quarters groaned under an immense impact. A second later, a massive armored foot, clad in dark, pitted steel, tore through the wood, splintering it inwards. Two hulking figures, clad in the black-and-silver livery of Clan Varkos—her ex-fiancé’s house—shoved their way through the broken entryway, broadswords gleaming with a sickly green luminescence. Behind them, more heavy boots thudded in the hallway. “For the rightful reclaimers of Qalqa!” one of the warriors bellowed, his voice muffled by his helm, charging with his blade raised toward Khaval. Tashiqa didn’t think. Her instincts, honed by years of protecting her students from cheap shots and dirty tactics, surged to the forefront. Khaval was the Demon King, a terrifying tyrant, but he was also weakened, and *this* was a dirty shot. She launched herself forward, a blur of motion. The warrior's vision, fixed on Khaval, tracked too slow to catch her. Her left foot snapped out, a front-kick that struck his helmeted faceplate with a sharp clang. The brute reeled back, staggering into his comrade. “Stand down, you overgrown tin cans!” Tashiqa yelled, all pretense of a lowly stoker discarded. She dipped under the second man's clumsy lunge, pivoting into a roundhouse kick that drove into his unprotected ribs. The force sent him skidding across the polished floor, crashing into a priceless display case filled with ancient, fragile scrolls. Pitted glass shards and vellum rained across the floor. Khaval, holding his shoulder, watched her, his one visible eye wide with a mixture of shock and a terrifying, possessive admiration. The reinforcements hesitated, thrown by the sight of a soot-stained furnace hand battering their vanguard. This was not the expected resistance. This was something else entirely. “Tashiqa,” Khaval breathed, his voice laced with a new, dark intensity. “You… you fight for *me*?” “I fight against cowards who think they can cheap-shot their way to victory!” she retorted, deflecting a heavy shield rim with her forearm. She wasn’t fighting *for* Khaval, not really. She was fighting *against* the immediate threat, the violation of her space, the arrogant confidence of these interlopers. She saw red, a familiar, furious heat that had always driven her. More heavily armored sellswords poured through the doorframe. Tashiqa spun, ducked, and weaved, a whirlwind of fists and feet, a human shield before the faltering Demon King. Every strike was precise, aimed at weak points in their armor, at joints, at the exposed faces through helmet slits. One collapsed under a fractured kneecap, another clutching a mangled wrist. Her breath came in ragged gasps, but the adrenaline fueled her. Suddenly, from a forgotten soot-bucket in the corner, a tiny, furious shriek echoed. Pabu, his minuscule frame bristling with outrage, clambered out, his soot-fur standing on end. He surveyed the chaotic scene, his beady eyes gleaming with a manic fervor. “The invasion has begun!” Pabu screeched, his voice surprisingly carrying over the din of battle. “My grand strategy! The fools think they can breach the Inner Sanctum! But they underestimate the tactical genius of Warlord Pabu!” [NOTIFICATION: Alliance formed. Unit 'Pabu' has initiated combat protocols. Threat level: Escalated.] He scuttled to the blasted sill, letting out a series of high-pitched whistles and clicks. Below, in the courtyard, the grand siege engines of Clan Varkos—colossal catapults and rumbling battering rams—were preparing their next assault on the upper walls. Just as a boulder settled into a catapult cradle, hundreds of scuttling shapes surfaced from the flagstones below. Hundreds, then thousands, of feral ash-rats, their eyes glowing like embers in the dim light, poured from the cracks and crevices of the Dread Citadel’s lower levels. They swarmed the catapult, a living tide of teeth and claws, gnawing at ropes, scrambling into the gears, their chittering a horrifying chorus. “The Vanguard of the Ash-Horde has been unleashed!” Pabu shrieked with glee, performing a triumphant, if wobbly, dance on the windowsill. “And now, for the *true* elite!” From the depths of the Sub-Furnaces, where Tashiqa had once trained, a guttural, wheezing roar resonated. A dozen soot-demons, larger than Pabu but still no bigger than a well-fed dog, emerged from ventilation shafts and maintenance tunnels, their bodies wreathed in smoldering ash. These were the grimy, loyal denizens of the lower levels, stirred to action by Pabu’s incessant, delusional recruitment drives. They flung themselves at the battering rams, their small, surprisingly strong forms causing absolute pandemonium. They bit at the legs of the operators, pulled on critical levers, and jammed their fiery bodies into the mechanisms, causing the siege engines to shudder, then groan, and finally, spectacularly, to collapse in on themselves with deafening crashes. Below, the courtyard erupted in panicked shouts and the cries of injured engineers. The assault on the Dread Citadel, so meticulously planned, faltered. A glimmer of grim satisfaction flashed across Khaval’s face, even as he clutched his shoulder, observing the chaos Pabu and his 'army' had wrought. Inside, Tashiqa capitalized on the distraction, her strikes hammering the remaining invaders back toward the corridor. One last, heavily armored warrior lunged, but she met his charge with a powerful knee to the gut, doubling him over before slamming her elbow into the back of his neck. He crumpled like a discarded tunic. She stood over him, breathing hard, her knuckles stinging, a thin trickle of blood running from her lip. The silence that followed was jarring, broken only by the distant roars of the ash-rats and the frantic shouts from the courtyard. The hall lay in ruins, strewn with crushed oak, splintered tables, and bleeding bodies. Tashiqa turned, ready to face Khaval, ready for his accusations, for his terrifying questions. Footsteps crunched against the kindling remaining in the doorway as a new figure stepped through. He was tall, draped in tailored silks, his sharp face settled into a smirk that heated Tashiqa's blood to a boil. Her ex-fiancé, Torvin Varkos, stood framed in the wreckage, surveying the casualties. His eyes, cold and calculating, locked onto Tashiqa, then flickered to the weakened Demon King she had just protected. “Well, well, well,” he drawled, voice silky and smooth. “Look what we have here. My runaway bride, defending the Demon King.” He chuckled, a sound that grated on Tashiqa’s ears. “You’ve been remarkably elusive, Tashiqa. But I knew you’d come out of hiding eventually.” He raised his hand. In his palm, glowing with an eerie, familiar green light, was a small, polished stone. As he clenched his fist around it, the Evasion Interface in Tashiqa’s vision flickered violently, its ember-text shifting, twisting, then displaying a single, horrifying message, not in the usual System script, but in a cold, mocking font that mirrored Torvin’s smirk: [ACCESSING PERSONAL DATA: TASHIQA. STATUS: TARGET ACQUIRED. LOCATION: CONFIRMED. COMMENCING EXTRACTION PROTOCOL.] “You see, my love,” Torvin purred, “Khaval’s little toy wasn’t meant to *find* you. It was meant to make you *run*. And I merely provided the finish line.”
