Chapter 6: The First Broken Ring
1.9k words
Cold sweat slicked Yujin’s palms as he backed away from the glowing monitors.
Every screen in the security room displayed a different angle of his life, a meticulously archived gallery of his vulnerability.
There he was sleeping in his college dorm. There he was walking to a convenience store at three in the morning.
Another screen showed him crying in his apartment on the anniversary of his parents' abandonment, his face buried in his hands.
Ricky stood beside him, a faint, beautiful smile playing on his lips, completely unbothered by the horror radiating from Yujin’s trembling frame.
Behind them, Gyuvin leaned against the heavy metal doorframe, his long shadow stretching across the concrete floor like a physical trap.
"This isn't real," Yujin whispered, his voice cracking as he looked between the two wealthy heirs.
Laughter didn't follow. Only a heavy, suffocating silence filled the room, punctuated by the low hum of the servers and the steady blink of green LED lights.
"It is very real, Yujin-ah," Ricky murmured, stepping closer until the expensive scent of his sandalwood cologne filled Yujin’s lungs.
"We’ve watched over you for so long, keeping you safe from a world that doesn’t deserve you."
Tears burned the backs of Yujin’s eyes, hot and fast, spilling over his pale cheeks.
"Please let our friends go," Yujin pleaded, his hands shaking so violently he had to clutch his own elbows to keep from falling.
"You guys already killed Hanbin hyung... But why? Please let them go, I would do anything."
Gyuvin walked over, his movements slow and deliberate, before stopping right in front of Yujin.
Large, warm hands reached out, gently cupping Yujin's face, his thumb wiping away a stray tear with terrifying tenderness.
"We didn't kill him, sweet boy," Gyuvin whispered, his dark eyes sparkling with a mixture of obsession and genuine amusement.
"But we aren't going to stop whoever did. Why should we? This hotel is a crucible. By the end of the night, only those who truly belong to you will remain."
Ricky laughed softly, a sound that sent an icy shiver straight down Yujin's spine.
"And you only belong to us," Ricky added, his fingers trailing down Yujin's neck, leaving a trail of goosebumps in their wake.
"Now, go back to the lobby. The show is about to start, and you wouldn't want to miss the opening act."
Fear locked Yujin's muscles, but the sheer urgency of survival forced him to wrench himself free from Gyuvin's touch.
He stumbled backward, hitting the edge of a server rack.
Metal groaned against the impact.
"Don't touch me," Yujin choked out, his voice a ragged gasp.
Gyuvin merely smiled, a sickeningly patient expression that suggested he had all the time in the world.
"You'll come to us on your own eventually," Gyuvin said, adjusting the collar of his designer coat.
"When there is no one else left to turn to, Yujin-ah. We are your only shelter."
Horrified by the implication, Yujin turned and bolted through the doorway.
Footsteps echoed loudly down the concrete corridor as he ran, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.
Every corridor of the luxury hotel felt longer now, the high ceilings and minimalist decor mocking his desperation.
Heavy steel security doors had sealed off the exits, transforming the opulent sanctuary into a high-tech tomb.
---
Screams echoed from the grand lobby long before Yujin reached the heavy double doors.
Raw, unfiltered panic bled through the thick mahogany wood, making him hesitate for a fraction of a second.
Grasping the brass handle, he pushed the door open, only to freeze on the threshold.
Chaos ruled the elegant space.
Hao stood in the center of the room, his knuckles white around the handle of a heavy fire axe.
Crimson droplets clung to the rusted steel blade, dripping onto the pristine white marble floor with a slow, rhythmic tap.
"Where is it, Gunwook?" Hao shrieked, his voice raw, his eyes bloodshot and wide with a manic intensity.
"I know you took it! You were the last one near his body!"
Gunwook stood several feet back, his massive frame tensed, his hands raised in a defensive posture.
"Are you insane, hyung?" Gunwook yelled back, his voice trembling despite his size.
"I didn't touch Hanbin's body! I was with Matthew the entire time!"
Matthew stood near the edge of the grand staircase, hugging his knees to his chest, weeping silently as he watched the confrontation.
"He's lying!" Hao screamed, raising the axe slightly higher, his muscles tensing.
"That room key to Hanbin's suite is gone. The killer took it, or someone here is helping them. You've always been jealous of his relationship with Yujin!"
Taerae stepped forward, his hands held out in a desperate bid to mediate.
"Hao, put the axe down," Taerae pleaded, his voice cracking with fear.
"We are turning on each other. This is exactly what whoever did this wants. We've known each other since we were kids!"
"Kids?" Hao spat, a bitter, hysterical laugh bubbling up from his throat.
"You think childhood friendship means anything now? One of us is a murderer! Or did you forget that Gunwook’s family business was practically saved by a massive anonymous donation right after Hanbin’s family went bankrupt?"
Silence descended on the room, heavy and toxic.
Gunwook's face flushed a deep, angry red.
"That had nothing to do with this!" Gunwook roared, taking a step forward, his fists clenching.
"Don't you dare bring my family into this, Hao! You're just projecting because everyone knows you hated how close Hanbin and Yujin were getting!"
Yujin watched from the doorway, his back pressed against the cold wood, his breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps.
Paranoia was a poison, and it was spreading through his friends with terrifying speed.
These were the people who had sworn to protect him, the makeshift family he had clung to after his parents abandoned him.
Seeing them tear each other apart felt like watching his entire world crumble into dust.
"Please," Yujin whispered, but his voice was drowned out by the escalating shouting.
Jiwoong stood in the shadow of the columns, his eyes cold and analytical, watching the scene unfold without making a move to intervene.
"Look at Jiwoong!" Hao yelled, pointing the axe toward the older boy.
"Why is he so quiet? He’s the one who suggested we come to this godforsaken hotel in the first place!"
"I suggested it because we needed a break," Jiwoong said, his voice dangerously low and calm.
"If you point that weapon at me, Hao, I promise you won't like how this ends."
Taerae grabbed Hao’s shoulder, trying to force him to look away from Jiwoong.
"Stop this! Both of you!" Taerae screamed, tears finally spilling down his cheeks.
"Hanbin is dead! We should be trying to find a way out, not deciding who to kill next!"
Whipping around, Hao shook off Taerae’s grip with a violent jerk of his arm.
"There is no way out!" Hao yelled, his voice echoing off the high, vaulted ceiling.
"Heavy steel doors are locked! The phones are dead! We are trapped in here with a monster, and that monster is sitting right in this room!"
A suffocating fear closed in on Yujin.
This fear of abandonment, of being left entirely alone in a dark, hostile world, clawed at his chest.
He looked at Hao, then at Gunwook, and then at Jiwoong.
None of them looked like his friends anymore.
They looked like wild animals trapped in a cage, ready to tear each other's throats out for a scrap of survival.
And behind it all, Yujin knew who was pulling the strings.
Gyuvin and Ricky were watching this.
They were probably smiling, enjoying the spectacle of their friends destroying themselves.
In their minds, they wanted Yujin to lose everyone, so he would have no choice but to throw himself into their waiting arms.
Rain lashed against the reinforced glass windows high above, a relentless, drumming sound that mimicked the frantic beating of Yujin’s heart.
Thick air in the lobby was heavy with the metallic tang of dried blood from the axe blade, mixed with the expensive lavender scent of the hotel's automated diffusers.
It was a sickening combination.
Hao’s chest heaved as he stared at Gunwook, the axe head trembling in his grip.
"Give me the key, Gunwook," Hao demanded, his voice dropping to a harsh, deadly whisper.
"If you don't have it, let me search your pockets. Otherwise, I’m going to assume you’re the one who slaughtered our brother."
"Touch me and see what happens," Gunwook growled, his body lowering into a defensive crouch, ready to tackle the older boy if he swung.
"You've lost your mind, Hao. Completely lost it."
Sobbing loudly, Matthew covered his ears as if he could shut out the nightmare unfolding around him.
"Make it stop... please, just make it stop..." Matthew whimpered, rocking back and forth on the bottom step of the staircase.
No one comforted him.
Fragile bonds of a decade of friendship were snapping one by one, like glass threads under immense pressure.
Yujin took a slow step forward, his legs shaking so badly he felt like he might collapse.
"Hyungs... please," Yujin cried out, his voice finally cutting through the tension.
Everyone turned to look at him.
For a brief second, a flicker of recognition passed through Hao’s bloodshot eyes.
His manic anger seemed to waver, replaced by a momentary pang of guilt as he looked at Yujin’s terrified, pale face.
But the paranoia was too deep, the roots of suspicion too firmly planted by the unseen architects of their doom.
"Yujin-ah," Hao said, his voice softening slightly but remaining dangerously unstable.
"Stay back. This giant bastard is dangerous. He's been lying to us. He's the one who did it."
"We didn't do this!" Yujin screamed, tears streaming down his face.
"Every single one of us is innocent! You have to believe me! We're being played!"
He wanted to tell them about Ricky and Gyuvin.
Desperately, he wanted to scream that their wealthy, perfect friends were the monsters behind the cameras.
But the memory of Ricky's cold possessiveness whispered in his ear, warning him of the consequences.
If he spoke the truth, what would they do to the others?
What would they do to him?
Trapped in a web of their making, Yujin felt every movement only tighten the silk around his throat.
Hao stared at Yujin, his grip on the axe loosening slightly.
"What do you mean, played?" Hao asked, his brow furrowing as he tried to process Yujin's words.
"Yujin, what do you know?"
Taerae looked at Yujin with sudden hope, taking a step toward him.
"Yujin, if you know something, anything, you have to tell us," Taerae urged.
"We can fix this. We can still get out of here."
Gunwook remained tense, his eyes darting between Hao and Yujin, still on guard.
Before Yujin could speak, before he could find the courage to utter the names of his stalkers, a sudden silence fell over the room.
It wasn't a peaceful silence.
It was the heavy, suffocating quiet that precedes a lightning strike.
Hao suddenly drops the axe, his eyes wide with horror as he points to Yujin's collar, where a tiny, active red laser sight is resting directly over his heart.
