Chapter 7: A Hunt in the Dark

1.2k words

Red light painted a burning, perfectly round circle right over my heart. Nobody dared to move. Sweat dripped down my temple, cold as melted snow, tracing a slow line down my jaw. Hao slowly lowered the bloodied woodcutter's axe, his knuckles white as his gaze shifted from Gunwook to the glowing dot resting on my chest. "Don't move, Yujin," Ricky whispered, his hand creeping toward his waistband with smooth, deadly calculation. Anger, hot and volatile, flared in my chest, burning away the paralysis of my fear. "Stop!" I screamed, my voice cracking under the weight of my terror. Everyone froze, shocked by my sudden outburst. "Yujin, what are you doing?" Taerae whispered, clutching his bruised side. "They are the ones," I choked out, pointing a trembling finger at Gyuvin and Ricky. "They built this," I continued, tears of betrayal stinging my eyes. "They've been watching us. They've been watching me for years." Silence fell over the room like a heavy iron vault. Matthew took a step back, his eyes darting between me and the two billionaires. "What do you mean, watching you?" "Every breath," I whispered, my voice shaking. "Every single step I took. They mapped it all. They have trackers on my clothes, cameras in my room. They brought us here to trap me. They own this place." Gyuvin didn't even flinch. Instead, his lips curved into a soft, terrifyingly gentle smile. "We did it to keep you safe, darling," Gyuvin murmured, his eyes glittering with an unnatural warmth. "You're sick," Gunwook spat, his fists clenching until they shook. Jiwoong let out a low, dangerous growl, stepping between me and Ricky. "You brought a killer here to play some twisted game?" Jiwoong demanded. "We didn't bring him," Ricky corrected coldly, his tone devoid of any empathy. "But we will end him. Just stay by my side, Yujin." Suddenly, the red dot on my chest blinked. A sharp, metallic ping echoed from the glass dome above us. Before anyone could scream, a deafening crack shattered the overhead skylight. Shards of heavy glass rained down like knives. Screams erupted as the group scattered into the darkness. Another shot rang out, chipping the marble floor just inches from Matthew's feet. "Run!" Hao yelled, grabbing Matthew's arm and dragging him toward the east corridor. Jiwoong lunged forward, trying to grab my hand, but another bullet tore into the floor between us, kicking up sharp stone fragments. Panic took over my senses. I turned and ran toward the grand staircase, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. Dust and smoke filled the air, stinging my throat. Behind me, I could hear the heavy thud of boots pursuing us. My foot slipped on a piece of shattered glass. I braced for the hard impact of the floor, but strong, unyielding arms caught me before I could fall. "I've got you," Gyuvin's voice purred in my ear. His grip was vice-like, crushing my ribs as he lifted me effortlessly off my feet. "Let me go!" I thrashed, kicking my legs, but he ignored my struggles entirely. He dragged me upward, sprinting up the stairs with a terrifying level of athletic ease. Ricky was right behind us, holding a heavy iron fire poker, his face expressionless and pale in the dim moonlight. "Keep moving, Gyuvin!" Ricky hissed, scanning the dark shadows of the second floor. We lunged into the dark, labyrinthine hallways of the second floor. Paint peeled from the walls in long, rotting ribbons. Every door we passed was locked, their heavy brass handles refusing to budge. Behind us, the sound of slow, heavy footsteps began to ascend the stairs. The killer was taking his time. He knew we had nowhere to escape. Gyuvin pulled me down a narrow side corridor that smelled of damp mold and old linen. He stopped in front of a small, rusted iron door set low into the wall. "In here," Gyuvin whispered, tossing the heavy latch open. A dark, vertical drop yawned inside, smelling of stale detergent and decades of dust. "No, please," I begged, shaking my head violently. "It's too small. We'll get stuck." "Trust me, Yujin," Gyuvin murmured, his eyes glittering with a frightening intensity. Before I could scream, he shoved me into the dark opening. I slid down a short metal incline before my feet hit a rusted metal grate, stopping my descent. An instant later, Gyuvin squeezed in after me. He slammed the heavy iron door shut, plunging us into absolute, suffocating darkness. Space was agonizingly small. I was pressed flat against the cold metal wall of the chute, with Gyuvin's massive frame pinned directly against my back. I could feel every single contour of his body. His chest rose and fell in rapid, heavy thuds against my shoulder blades. His heartbeat was racing, a frantic, wild rhythm that sounded less like fear and more like dark excitement. "Gyuvin, let me out," I whispered, my voice trembling as claustrophobia clawed at my throat. "Shh," he breathed, his lips brushing against the sensitive skin of my earlobe. His hands found my waist, his long fingers digging into my hips with a possessive strength that bruised. I tried to squirm, but there was absolutely no room to move. Every small twitch of my body only pressed me closer against him. "Stop moving, darling," Gyuvin whispered, his voice dropping to a dangerous, velvety purr. "You're a monster," I choked out, a single tear slipping down my cheek. "Maybe," Gyuvin agreed softly. He leaned closer, inhaling deeply against my neck, as if memorizing my scent. "But I'm your monster," he whispered. "Do you think I cared about those cameras? Do you think I care about this hotel? I only care about you." His hand slid up from my waist, his fingers tracing the collarbone where the red laser had rested just minutes ago. His touch was freezing, sending a violent shiver down my spine. "When I saw that light on your chest," Gyuvin muttered, his voice suddenly turning dark and jagged. "My blood ran cold," he continued, his grip tightening until I whimpered. "Nobody gets to target you," he whispered. "Nobody gets to look at you like you're prey." I squeezed my eyes shut, wishing I could disappear. "I will tear his throat out," Gyuvin promised, his voice dripping with a terrifying sincerity. "I will murder anyone who dares to look at you that way again," he added. "I will paint these walls with their blood before I let them touch a single hair on your head," he vowed. This wasn't love. This was a predatory obsession, a dark, suffocating cage masquerading as protection. I was trapped between a faceless killer roaming the dark halls and the literal monster holding me hostage in the dark. "Gyuvin, please," I cried silently, my chest heaving against his. "I love you, Yujin," he whispered back, his lips pressing a firm, bruising kiss against my temple. We stood there in the stifling heat of the chute, suspended in a horrific limbo. Outside, the floorboards groaned. Slow, deliberate footsteps echoed in the hallway. I held my breath, my heart hammering so hard I feared Gyuvin could feel it breaking through my ribs. Footsteps stopped right outside the iron door. My lungs burned. I stared into the pitch black, praying the killer would just pass us by. A heavy hand suddenly slaps against the metal outside of the laundry chute, accompanied by a raspy, distorted voice whispering, 'Found you, Yujin.'
