Chapter 5: Whispers of the Golden Cage

Sweat dripped down Matthew’s temple, catching the flickering light of the fireplace. Embers popped and crackled in the hearth, sending tiny sparks upward only to die in the soot-stained chimney. "We can't just sit here like sheep waiting for the slaughter," Gunwook growled, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles shone white under the dim chandelier. He slammed his hand against the mahogany table, making the crystal glasses rattle. Jiwoong paced the length of the grand lounge, his heavy leather boots clicking sharply against the polished hardwood. Each step sounded like a ticking clock, counting down the seconds they had left in this godforsaken hotel. Anger rolled off the group in thick, suffocating waves, masking the raw, desperate terror underneath. They had spent the last two hours analyzing every lock, every window, and every potential exit, only to find themselves completely entombed. Matthew paced back and forth, his hands running through his hair. "If we try to break the front doors, the security system might lock down even tighter," Matthew muttered. "We don't know how this place is wired." Hao sat on the arm of a plush velvet sofa, his head buried in his hands, shoulders trembling violently as he whispered incoherent prayers. Taerae stood near the barricaded windows, staring blankly at the reinforced wood as if he could see through to the dark, silent forest outside. Nobody noticed Yujin slipping his hand into his coat pocket. Cool, smooth plastic brushed against his cold, trembling fingertips. Gyuvin’s master key card rested there like a hidden, venomous snake, humming with silent potential. Earlier, when Gyuvin had held him close after the terrifying attack in the library, he had slipped this silent weapon into Yujin's jacket with a secretive squeeze of his hand. Why would Gyuvin even have a master key card to an isolated luxury hotel in the middle of nowhere? Questions swirled in Yujin's mind, thick and dizzying, feeding his deepest, most primal fears. Neglect from his childhood had taught him never to trust a single soul, yet his broken heart craved the warmth of safety and affection. This toxic duality made him want to scream, trapped between the urge to run and the desperate need to be held. Quietly, he took a soft step backward, melting into the dark shadows of the grand hallway. None of his friends looked up to notice his quiet departure. They were too busy arguing about escape routes, too consumed by the bloody message left on the wall after Hanbin's brutal death. "Next is your turn." Those words burned behind Yujin’s eyelids, a constant, bloody threat written in his friend's lifeblood. --- Creeping up the winding marble staircase, Yujin held his breath, terrified that even his heartbeat would give him away. Every creak of the old wood sounded like a gunshot in the silent, oppressive hotel. His heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic, trapped bird trying to break free from its cage. Upstairs, the corridor stretched out like an empty tomb, cold, dark, and utterly unforgiving. Gold-leaf frames hung crookedly on the walls, casting distorted shapes under the dim, flickering sconces. Holding the card tight, Yujin approached the heavy oak door marked Staff Only - Security Control. This was his only chance to regain control, to find some way to contact the outside world. If he could get inside, he could find the emergency radio or reboot the external cameras. Swiping the card, he waited with bated breath, his lungs burning. A soft, electric beep chimed through the empty hall. Green light flared, illuminating his pale, sweat-slicked face. Slowly, the heavy electronic lock clicked open with a satisfying thud. Pushing the door, Yujin slipped inside and closed it behind him, shutting out the rest of the world. Darkness swallowed him whole, heavy and smelling of hot plastic and old ozone. Blue and amber lights blinked in rhythmic, mechanical patterns, throwing strange, digital patterns across the concrete walls. Constant, low hums of the cooling fans filled the air, a white noise that did nothing to soothe his frayed nerves. Cold air blasted from the ceiling vents, raising immediate goosebumps on his bare arms. Stepping deeper into the room, he navigated the narrow aisles of metal cages, his eyes searching for the main terminal. Wires hung from the back of the console, dangling like dead vines in an abandoned jungle. Leaning closer, Yujin gasped, his hand flying to his mouth to stifle the sound. Dozens of thick, heavy fiber-optic cables lay on the floor. No physical force had snapped them under pressure. Each one had been cleanly, surgically severed with a sharp, heavy blade. Someone had cut them from the inside. Cold dread washed over him, freezing the blood in his veins as the horrifying realization hit. "Looking for something, sweetheart?" A low, smooth voice vibrated through the darkness, sending a violent shiver straight down his spine. Yujin spun around, his back slamming hard against a cold metal server rack. Ricky stepped out from the deepest shadow of the narrow server closet. Tall, imposing, and impeccably dressed despite the chaos, Ricky loomed over him like a predator cornering its prey. Sparks of silver hair caught the blinking blue light of the servers, making him look almost ethereal. "R-Ricky..." Yujin choked out, his throat dry as dust. Before he could take a single step to escape, Ricky closed the distance between them. Heavy, warm hands slammed against the metal rack on either side of Yujin’s head, trapping him completely. Suffocating heat radiated from Ricky's body, pressing against Yujin's cold skin. Expensive cologne mixed with the bitter, sharp scent of ash filled Yujin’s senses. It was a smell he knew too well—the scent that always seemed to linger in his bedroom when he woke up in the middle of the night. "You shouldn't be wandering around in the dark," Ricky murmured, his voice a dangerous, velvet purr. With a slow tilt of his head, Ricky leaned closer, his lips brushing the shell of Yujin's ear. "A fragile little thing like you could get hurt so easily in a place like this." Shivering, Yujin tried to push against Ricky’s broad chest, but it was like pushing against solid marble. "Did you do this?" Yujin whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of fear and anger. "Did you cut the wires?" Ricky laughed, a low, rumbling sound that vibrated against Yujin's collarbone. "Stop playing detective, Yujin," Ricky whispered, his thumb catching Yujin's chin, forcing him to look up into those dark, bottomless eyes. "It doesn't suit you. All you need to do is stay quiet. Let us take care of you." "Us?" Yujin’s eyes widened, his pupils dilating with terror. His mind raced, piecing together the terrifying puzzle. Gyuvin giving him the key card. Ricky waiting in the locked security room. They weren't trying to escape. They were orchestrating this. Every piece of the puzzle fell into place with a terrifying click. "Let me go," Yujin gasped, twisting his face away from Ricky's touch. "Never," Ricky whispered, his grip tightening just enough to send a thrill of terror down Yujin's spine. Desperation flared in Yujin's chest. Using all his strength, Yujin ducked under Ricky's arm, his small frame slipping through the gap. He scrambled for the door, his heart leaping into his throat. Slamming the card against the reader, he threw open the door and ran. Footsteps didn't follow him, but he could feel Ricky's burning gaze on his back. --- Flying down the marble staircase, Yujin gasped for air. He needed to tell the others. Warning them was his only chance at survival. As Yujin went down, everyone looked at him. Matthew took a step forward, his eyes wide with concern. "Yujin? Where were you? We were looking—" Suddenly, everything went black. Ambient lights died instantly, plunging the grand lobby into absolute, terrifying darkness. Heavy, industrial clangs echoed through the walls. Metal met metal with deafening force. Massive steel security doors slid shut, sealing the windows and exits with absolute finality. Screams erupted from the group. "What's happening?!" Taerae shrieked. "Power is completely dead!" Gunwook shouted. A harsh, mechanical click hummed through the ceiling. Red emergency lights flared to life. Bloody, crimson light bathed the entire room, casting long, monstrous shadows across the walls. Standing near the fireplace, Gyuvin and Ricky stood side by side. Both of them were smirking. Their eyes, dark and glittering under the red glow, locked onto Yujin. "Aww..." Gyuvin cooed, his voice dripping with mock sympathy. "You all think the killer is outside the house," Ricky added, stepping forward with an easy, terrifying grace. Gyuvin chuckled, his head tilting to the side. "Now who will tell them..." Gyuvin whispered, his smile widening into something truly demonic. "It was always us." Chaos broke out instantly. Jiwoong lunged toward them, but the heavy doors locked with a final, sealing hiss. "You bastards!" Gunwook yelled, reaching for a heavy iron poker by the fireplace. Before anyone could move, a thick gas began to hiss from the vents. Coughing, the group began to stumble. Yujin felt his knees go weak. Hands, strong and unyielding, grabbed him from behind. Ricky dragged him backward, pulling him into the dark hallway away from the suffocating gas. Yujin thrashed, but his muscles felt like lead. Gyuvin appeared in front of him, kneeling down and stroking Yujin's cheek with a feather-light touch. "Shh, baby. It's almost over," Gyuvin whispered. Ricky held Yujin tightly against his chest, his breath hot against Yujin's neck. "You still don't understand, do you?" Ricky murmured. Slowly, Ricky pulled out his phone. Yujin stared at the screen, his vision blurring. There should have been zero signal in this remote, dead zone. Yet, the screen glowed with a crystal-clear, high-definition video feed. Ricky pressed play, showing Yujin a live-stream feed of Yujin sleeping in his bed from three nights ago.
