The Glare-Wyrm lunged, a monstrous silhouette against the erupting wall, its massive head snapping towards them with impossible speed. Tivya didn't hesitate. She shoved Bramon aside, pulling a handful of luminous dust from her belt pouch. It wasn't the sedative from before, but a concoction designed to overstimulate neural pathways. As the wyrm’s fangs descended, she flung the powder, aiming for its eyes. The creature shrieked, a sound like grinding stone, recoiling as the iridescent motes seared its optic nerves. It thrashed, its tail whipping through the air, pulverizing the remaining wall with ease.
“My turn,” Bramon growled, already moving. His movements were fluid, precise, devoid of the previous burdened exhaustion. He surged with raw focus, the beast-curse tempered into pure lethality. He met the Glare-Wyrm’s charge with a flying kick, embedding his reinforced boot deep into its jaw. The creature stumbled, momentarily stunned, and Bramon followed up with a blur of fists, targeting the soft underbelly scales Tivya had pointed out in a rapid-fire mental exchange.
Yulon’s mercenaries, a dozen heavily armored figures, poured through the shattered opening, their arcane rifles humming with stored fuel. Tivya cursed, grabbing a discarded wrench and twisting it with unnatural strength, ripping a sharp, jagged edge from its head. She moved like a phantom, no longer the clumsy vet, but a dancer of death, her every parry and dodge economical. A rifle blast singed her sleeve as she ducked, the hot air stinging her ear. She spun, bringing the makeshift blade up in a swift arc, disarming the raider and driving the blunt end into his temple. He collapsed without a sound.
Bramon was a whirlwind, a force of nature. Rest had sharpened every instinct, every sinew. He moved with brutal efficiency, felling three shock-troopers in quick succession, his blows splintering their armor plates. The Glare-Wyrm recovered, its eyes still smarting but its fury undiminished. It lunged at Bramon from behind, its venomous fangs glinting.
“Behind you!” Tivya yelled, leaping onto a stack of crates. She hurled a vial of viscous, shimmering liquid. It exploded on the wyrm's flank, not harming it but coating a patch of scales. “Now!”
Bramon understood. He pivoted, grabbing the wyrm’s neck, his gauntleted hand finding purchase on the slick, treated scales. He twisted, applying pressure to a specific nerve cluster, a move only someone with intimate knowledge of beast anatomy would dare. The wyrm bucked, its powerful body spasming, but Bramon held fast. With a final, agonizing crunch, the creature went limp, its massive form crashing to the ground, kicking up dust and debris.
Only three fighters remained, led by a hulking figure whose dark-iron plate bore the crest of the Elder’s personal guard. Tivya and Bramon moved in perfect, brutal synchronization. She incapacitated one with a blast of concentrated sleep-gas from a hidden wrist-launcher, while Bramon slammed another against the wall, his fist leaving a dent in the steel. The leader, a man named Targon, roared, bringing down a massive shock-hammer. Bramon blocked it with his forearm guard, the impact vibrating through the den. Tivya circled, a blur of motion. She dipped low, swiping at Targon’s legs with the jagged wrench. He stumbled, giving Bramon the opening to deliver a crippling uppercut that sent the man sprawling, his helmet clattering away.
Targon lay still. Bramon placed a boot on his chest, securing him. Tivya immediately knelt, ripping open the man’s tunic. “They always carry them,” she muttered, her fingers flying across his chest. Beneath a protective charm, she found it: a thin, oiled parchment. She unrolled it, her eyes scanning the faded script and crude symbols. Her gaze snapped up to Bramon’s. “It’s a map. And look…” She pointed to a faded section. “It’s right under the Talon-Keep. A hidden lab.” Her voice was tight with cold fury. “He’s been breeding them, right beneath our feet, using our power cores, our resources. The audacity of that old serpent.”
Before they could formulate a plan, the metallic clang of boots echoed from the smuggler’s den entrance, accompanied by the distinct whir of field armor. Both Tivya and Bramon stiffened, their weapons ready. The entrance hissed open, revealing a squad of scout troops, their rifles raised. Leading them was a junior scout, his expression rigid and his weapon leveled.
“Tivya Jorl, Bramon Vask,” the scout’s voice cut through the tense silence. “You are both under arrest.”
A cold knot tightened in Tivya's gut as Bramon shifted, readying for another fight. This was it, she thought, the other shoe dropping. Bramon was cleared, but she was still the fugitive, the bio-alchemist publicly accused. She tightened her grip on the wrench, preparing to sell her freedom dearly.
Then the scout's hand shifted, not to signal an advance, but to swing his own rifle. He aimed directly at the patrolman standing beside him. “Lower your weapons, Lieutenant Arlon,” the scout barked, his voice steady. “The true traitor is not here. It’s Elder Yulon.”
The patrol froze, confusion rippling through their ranks. Arlon, a burly man with a scarred cheek, scoffed. “What in the Abyss are you talking about, boy? Stand down, now, or face court-martial!”
“I’ve seen the manifests,” the scout countered, his aim unwavering. “He’s been siphoning core charges, redirecting supply lines. The chimaera attack at the gala… the intel I decrypted showed Yulon’s personal accounts tied to the smuggling. He’s been manipulating evidence, using us. And… and Tivya Jorl saved my life that night. She’s not the one.” His finger twitched on the trigger. “Captain Vask confirmed it in his report before he vanished. If you don’t stand with me, you stand with a criminal.”
Arlon hesitated, glancing at the fallen Glare-Wyrm and the incapacitated enforcers, then at Bramon, whose gaze was a silent promise of swift retribution. A few of the regulars wavered, lowering their rifles slightly.
“You have two choices, Arlon,” the scout pushed, his tone steady. “Help us expose Yulon, or become an accomplice. Your choice.”
Arlon’s jaw worked, then with a defeated sigh, he lowered his rifle. “Alright. But this better be worth it.” The other troops lowered their weapons. A new, fragile alliance was forged in the dust and blood of the smuggler’s den.
“The lab is directly beneath Talon-Keep,” Tivya stated, showing the patrol the map. “We need to move. Now, before he realizes his retinue hasn't reported back.”
The journey through the hidden passages, guided by the map, was a blur of calculated haste. They moved silently, a combined force of bio-alchemist, captain, and commandeered patrol. The air grew heavy, thick with the metallic tang of unrefined beast-core vapors and a faint, unsettling musk. They emerged into a vast, cavernous space, a true nightmare foundry. Rows of shimmering stasis-pods lined the walls, each containing a nascent chimaera, some barely formed, others twitching with predatory hunger.
At the heart of the chamber, atop a raised platform, stood Elder Yulon. He turned, his usually placid face contorted into a mask of manic glee. In his gnarled hands, he held a crystalline orb, pulsing with an eerie, violet light. It was the master catalyst prism for the city’s beast-cores, the linchpin of Ophalon’s grid. He saw them – Bramon, Tivya, and the intercepted patrol. His eyes, usually clouded with feigned senility, blazed with triumph and madness.
“Too late!” Yulon shrieked, his voice echoing off the cavern walls. “You think you’ve won? The entire city will burn for my vision!” With a guttural laugh, he smashed the prism down with vicious force against the platform’s edge. The master prism exploded, spraying jagged mineral splinters charged with blinding radiation. Instantly, the stasis-pods around them hissed open. From within, a tidal wave of monstrous, starving chimaeras, their eyes glowing red with hunger, erupted into the chamber, snarling and clawing, racing towards the ascending conduits that led directly up into the unsuspecting Talon-Keep.
