Chapter 9 of 10
The Beast-Healer's Command

A low howl ripped through the shaft, sharp with hunger. Above them, a tremor shook the very foundation of the Keep, followed by the sickening crunch of splintering adamantine and the screams of those caught unaware. The hybrid swarm, freed from stasis, was already tearing through the upper levels.
“No, you maniac!” Bramon shouted, voice harsh as grinding stone, surging forward in midnight armor. He slammed an armored fist into the duct frame, cracking the reinforced plating. “Stop this now!”
Yulon, however, merely shrieked with unholy delight, his cackles echoing against the crumbling lab walls. He darted through a hidden archway, dissolving into the gloom before Bramon could reach him. The deck plates bucked beneath them as screeches signaled the pack's ascent.
“The master prism isn’t just for breeding,” Tivya said, her voice clipped, stripped of its scatterbrained lilt. Her gaze, sharp and analytical, swept over the chaos. “It regulates their aggression matrix. Shattering it sends them into a primal feeding frenzy. They won’t stop until the Keep is stripped bare.”
A young patrol officer drew his sidearm, knuckles white. “They’ll tear through the lower tiers first. The Talon-Vanguard are trained for skirmishes, not a subterranean siege.”
“Then we meet them,” Bramon declared, his hand already on the pommel of his greatsword, its blade glowing faintly with contained energy. He turned to Tivya, a fierce, unwavering trust in his eyes. “You know these creatures better than anyone. Tell me what to do.”
Tivya stood before him without her usual nervous fidgeting, eyes cold and calculating. Her usual brightly colored tunic was stained with grime, her hair escaping its neat bun, but her gaze was utterly unwavering. She was no longer the scattered vet; she was a tactician, a savant.
“These shafts vent directly into vital infrastructure,” Tivya said, tracing a schematic flickering on a cracked console. “The core reactor chamber, the Sky-Vessel docks, and the residential domes. We can't let them breach those. Officer, lock down this lab and incinerate any clutches or data slates. Bramon, with me. We cut off the primary vertical arteries.”
Her voice, now clear and resonant, carried an innate authority that compelled obedience. The sentry snapped a salute and primed his burner. Bramon felt a thrill, a deep, primal satisfaction, watching her take charge. This was the woman who had brought him back from the brink, the mind that had unraveled his curse. He had seen hints of her skill, but never this focused precision.
They moved with synchronized speed, a seamless blur of motion. Bramon’s greatsword hummed, clearing fallen girders while Tivya keyed emergency overrides on partition hatches, locking off secondary flues. They broke into a dimly lit maintenance shaft as the baying grew louder.
As they reached the access tunnel beneath the Keep's command hub, the ceiling gave way. Plating sheared with an ear-splitting shriek, masonry crumbled, and a mass of twisted predators dropped through. Their eyes, glowing like embers in the gloom, fixed on the two figures below. The air filled with the stench of raw meat and ozone.
A massive Grawl-Beast led the drop on spiked claws, flanked by coil-scaled crawlers and screeching Skyscreamers. The tunnel, designed for utility drones, became a bottleneck of tooth and claw.
Bramon moved with devastating speed, freed from the insomnia that had dulled his reflexes. His greatsword arced in silver sheets, striking with brutal momentum. He was a force of nature, a whirlwind of steel and fury.
He met the Grawl-Beast head-on, his sword a silver blur, cleaving through its armored hide with a single, devastating blow. The monstrosity hissed its death rattle, dropping in a shower of black ichor. Bramon wheeled without hesitation, the heavy edge shearing through the charging crawlers. He moved not just to kill, but to annihilate, a terrifying, beautiful display of raw strength.
“Behind me!” he shouted over the clash of steel, stepping into the breach with vicious focus.
But the swarm was endless, pouring through the widening breach. Tivya saw the sheer volume pouring through the breach; blades alone would not hold the perimeter.
Her eyes narrowed, scanning the monstrous tide. The abominations still held fragments of their original elemental essences beneath the corrupted grafting. She saw the flickers, the distorted frequencies. A plan, audacious and dangerous, ignited in her mind.
Ignoring Bramon’s protective roar, Tivya stepped forward, her hands outstretched. A soft, emerald light pulsed from her palms, bathing the immediate area in a soothing glow. The charging chimaeras faltered, their snarls dying in their throats. Their feral red eyes flickered, confusion warring with hunger.
“Listen to me!” Tivya projected, her voice resonating with an unearthly clarity, each word a command woven from pure bio-alchemical energy. “You are not his tools! You are beings of the wild, distorted by his greed! Reject his frenzied hunger! Reclaim your essence!”
The Skyscreamers, mid-dive, jerked violently in the air. Several coil-creatures thrashed, knots of muscle twisting against their own momentum. Bramon, momentarily stunned by her display, watched, mesmerized, as Tivya’s hands moved with intricate grace, weaving complex sigils of light in the air. Her entire focus was on the beasts, her brow furrowed in intense concentration.
She manipulated the harmonics of their synthetic grafts, unraveling Yulon’s crude commands. He watched as a massive Grawl-Beast, about to lunge, suddenly froze, its monstrous head tilting, its red eyes dimming to a dull orange.
“To me!” Tivya commanded the altered pack. “Hold the Keep! Clear the breach!”
Three armored quadrupeds and a knot of crawlers pivoted, turning their snarls toward the tunnel opening as fresh horrors emerged. They lunged back into the tunnel, locking jaws against their former kin in territorial fury.
Bramon held his sword steady, watching his supposedly clumsy captive command altered predators with effortless resonance. The reinforcements reaching the perimeter lowered their carbines, stunned into silence.
“She turned them,” a squad corporal whispered, lowering his rifle. “By the Fangs of Ophalon... look at her hands.”
The tide had turned, but the battle was far from over. The transit concourse was now a war zone. Garrison gryphons and stout Stone-Hounds clashed alongside Talon troopers against the remaining intruders. But the sheer numbers were overwhelming, and the sky-terraces above them were starting to crack under the strain.
“Yulon!” Bramon barked, spotting the Guildmaster scrambling across an unstable sky-terrace. The old man hurried toward an escape skiff tethered near the crumbling verge of the platform.
He held something aloft in his hand, a small, rolled parchment. Tivya recognized the wax seal instantly. It was her original contract, dangling directly over an elemental exhaust vent pulsing beneath the cracking floor.
“Looking for this, little traitor?” Yulon shrieked, his voice thin and reedy over the din of battle. He held the contract just out of reach, a cruel, triumphant smirk twisting his lips. “Your proof! Your freedom! All mine to burn, unless you let me go!”
Just then, a pitiful, high-pitched whimper cut through the chaos, drawing Tivya’s gaze. Buried beneath a heap of smoldering, burning rubble from a collapsed watchtower, a small, familiar tuft of fluffy, charcoal-grey feathers protruded. It was the rogue baby griffon, trapped and whimpering, its tiny wings struggling feebly against the weight that held it fast. The flames licked closer.
