Chapter 7 of 10
Blood and Alchemy

The inhuman roar vibrated through the metal-grate floor, shaking the very air. Bramon’s body writhed, every muscle coiling and releasing with violent force. The dark stain on his tunic, a festering bloom of venom, spread rapidly. His skin took on a grotesque, mottled pallor, veins beneath standing out like knotted ropes. He was dying, transforming, right there in the grimy underbelly of Ophalon, and Tivya was the only one who could save him.
“No. No, no, no!” The bubbly persona was gone, shattered like crystal on stone. Her voice was raw, laced with the terror that had been a silent companion since the gala. This was her fault. Yulon had sent that beast for *her*. She’d led it straight to Bramon. Her hands trembled, but her mind snapped into cold, precise focus. The exiled bio-alchemist, the true genius, clawed her way to the surface, shedding the airheaded mask like discarded skin.
She dropped to her knees beside him, ignoring the metallic tang in the air, the frantic, pained gasps escaping his lips. His eyes, once sharp and formidable, now swam with a terrifying, primal confusion, glazed over with agony. He was losing himself. She had to move, and fast.
“Hold on, Bramon. Hold on!” she urged, her voice fierce. She scanned the labyrinthine tunnels, the churning gears and humming conduits of the city’s forgotten mechanisms. There. A rusted access hatch, half-obscured by a cascade of ancient wiring. A smuggler’s den. Perfect.
Summoning strength she didn’t know she possessed, Tivya hooked her arms under Bramon’s shoulders. He went completely limp, his body convulsing even as she dragged him. His head lolled against her shoulder, his hair brushing her cheek, clammy and damp. Each inch was a struggle, her muscles screaming in protest, but she pulled, scraped, and shoved until they reached the hatch.
The metal groaned in protest as she heaved it open, revealing a dark, confined space reeking of stale air and forgotten secrets. It was a crude shelter, perhaps used by the very smugglers Yulon employed, but it offered cover. She wrestled Bramon inside, letting the hatch clatter shut behind them, plunging them into near-total darkness save for a thin shaft of light filtering through a crack in the ceiling.
Bramon’s guttural cries lost all cadence of speech. He thrashed, his limbs flailing, the fabric of his coat tearing along the seams as his body strained against itself. The venom was ravaging his core, tearing apart the delicate balance of his elemental beast-curse. If she didn’t act now, he would either die, or worse, become a feral, mindless monster. Her genius, once a curse, was now his only hope.
She dug into her satchel, fishing out an intricately carved bone needle and a vial of shimmering, viscous serum extracted from a rare sun-wyrm blossom. It was forbidden, dangerous, and precisely what he needed. She tore open the front of his shirt, exposing his chest. The venomous wound pulsed with dark energy, a sickening black halo around the barb still embedded in his flesh.
Her fingers, steady despite her internal tremor, found the pulsing vein just above his sternum. She uncorked the glass, the pale glow of the serum casting sharp highlights across her face. This wasn’t just about healing a wound; it was about recalibrating a beast-core, about injecting pure, undiluted vitality directly into his failing system. It was about sharing her own life-force, a dangerous, intimate exchange.
With a deep, fortifying inhale, Tivya pressed her palm flat against his chest, right over his heart. Her other hand brought the bone needle, coated in the wyrm serum, to the wound. The moment her skin met his, raw power struck upward into her palms. It wasn’t merely magic; it was an elemental connection, a primal spark that bypassed thought and went straight to the soul. Her own bio-alchemical field flowed out, mixing with the wyrm fluid and driving back the necrotic taint in his core. His thrashing lessened, his roars softening to pained groans.
She could feel his beast-curse, a raging inferno contained within him, now flickering, threatening to consume him. With every pulse of energy she sent, she felt a corresponding drain, a cold emptiness blooming in her own chest. Her vision blurred at the edges, her head light. This was far more draining than she’d anticipated. It was an illicit clash of flesh and venom, an exhausting siphon of her strength.
Minutes stretched into an eternity. Sweat plastered her hair to her forehead, and her entire body ached with the effort. Finally, the black halo around the wound receded. The deep, guttural growls subsided completely. Bramon’s body went slack, his breathing shallow but even. He was still. The barb remained, but the venom’s advance had halted. Exhausted, Tivya collapsed beside him, her hand still pressed to his chest, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart. The silence in the smuggler’s den was heavy, profound. She lay there, too spent to move, her head resting on his uninjured shoulder, feeling the faint warmth of his skin against hers.
Hours later, a soft groan. Tivya’s eyes fluttered open. The sliver of light from the crack had shifted, indicating the passage of time. Bramon stirred. His dark eyes, no longer glazed, were open, clear, and focused. He looked at the dim ceiling, then slowly, his gaze dropped to her. There was no confusion, no pain, only an intense, unwavering recognition. And then, a flicker of something she hadn’t expected: pure, undiluted peace.
“Tivya,” he murmured, his voice rough, but free of the exhaustion that had plagued him for so long. “My insomnia… it’s gone.” He blinked, then slowly lifted a hand to his chest, touching the spot where the barb was still embedded, now merely a foreign object, no longer a source of agony. His expression shifted, a dawning realization. “The ledger… it was a setup. Yulon.”
His voice was a low growl now, fury simmering beneath the calm. He knew. He finally knew. Her pulse pounded against her temples like a trip-hammer. He saw her, the real her, not the dizzy act. He understood she was framed. The terror should have returned, but it didn't. Instead, an unexpected heat flared beneath her collarbone, fierce and sharp.
Bramon shifted, levering himself up slightly, his hand reaching out, not for cuffs, not for retribution, but for her. His fingers tangled in her hair, drawing her firmly against him. His eyes, the color of midnight, bore into hers, no longer seeking a criminal, but something else entirely. “I don’t care about the law, Tivya,” he whispered, his voice thick with an unyielding hunger. “I only care about you.”
Then his lips were on hers, urgent, demanding, full of a fierce possessiveness that took her breath away. It was a kiss born of adrenaline and relief, of shared near-death and undeniable longing. A raw, demanding strike of mouth against mouth that tossed aside all rules. Her world tilted, every defense crumbling against the heat of his mouth. She answered with equal fervor, her fingers gripping the shreds of his jacket, dragging him closer to return the pressure.
The tender, forbidden moment was abruptly, violently shattered. A deafening *CRANGGG* echoed through the confined space, vibrating through the very floor. The steel hatch, the only barrier between them and the outside, buckled inwards with a horrifying shriek of tortured metal. Another impact, even heavier, sent splinters of rusted steel flying. The entire wall convulsed, a massive fissure appearing, followed by a blinding flash of elemental energy.
Yulon’s elite enforcers blasted through the wall, led by the Elder’s prized, monstrous familiar. His Glare-Wyrm, all obsidian scales and glowing, predatory eyes, filled the cavernous opening, its fangs dripping with a potent, shimmering toxin.
