Home Invasion

Orik’s fingers traced the unreadable glyphs on the new vault door, a thrill of ownership tightening his chest. "Imagine,” he murmured, “all my… treasures… safe here. My blade, the mana core, the potions… no one could ever find them.”
Zoya Nim, arms crossed, exhaled a weary breath. “Orik, we don’t have ‘treasures’. We have highly volatile, illegally obtained assets, and we are still broke. Did you forget we still need to pay Tarkis in artisanal jerky?”
Before Orik could retort with a passionate defense of his ‘asset diversification strategy,’ a muffled *thud-CRACK* vibrated through the very floorboards of the Med-Bay. It was followed by a series of sharp, metallic *pings* that sounded suspiciously like a breaching charge being set. Then, a deafening *BOOM* ripped through the quiet of his rooms, shaking the entire structure.
Dust motes danced in the air as a gaping, jagged hole appeared where his rusty metal door to the Sinks should have been. The familiar stench of stale air and industrial waste from outside rushed in, now mingled with the acrid scent of ozone and burnt metal. Through the smoke, armored figures, their visors bearing the stylized double-helix of the Conglomerate, poured into his cramped entry foyer.
“Syndicate raiders?” Zoya whispered, backing into the counter. “How did they…?”
“They found us,” Orik muttered, spotting a faint pulse of red static clinging to his collar.

[FAILURE TO REPEL INVASION WILL RESULT IN COMPLETE PROPERTY SEIZURE AND HOST DELETION.]
“Eviction? This is a declaration of war!” Tarkis Vo appeared from the Dojo doorway, alien blade already in hand, a feral grin spreading across his face. “Finally, a proper challenge! Get ready, Orik. Let’s show these corporate drones what happens when they try to seize a landlord’s holdings!”
The lead enforcer, a hulking shock-commando with a heavy energy rifle, stepped fully into the foyer. Before he could raise his weapon, Orik lunged, his hand a blur. He hadn’t forgotten his first System-granted ability. ‘Cinder Fist’ flared, coating his hand in scorching heat. He slammed his palm into the point-man's chest plate. The armor warped, hissed, and then melted through, exposing flesh that instantly seared. The enforcer crumpled, breath whistling out through melted vents.
More operatives surged in, their barrels spitting incandescent energy bolts. Orik ducked, rolling under a volley of fire. “Zoya! Greenhouse! Tarkis, take the front!”
Zoya, surprisingly quick despite her fear, darted towards the Mana-Crystal Greenhouse door. She reappeared moments later, dragging a potted plant with razor-sharp, emerald leaves that twitched ominously. “The voracious ‘Grumble-Snappers’ from Sector-Gamma 7!” she gasped, heaving it towards the advancing troopers. “They strike at sudden motion!”
The instant the plant was in the light of the entryway, its leaves unfurled with a wet *snap*. They whipped out, agile as serpents, wrapping around the nearest operative's helmet. A sickening *CRUNCH* echoed as the plant’s foliage constricted, crushing the composite plating and snapping the neck beneath.
Tarkis, a whirlwind of motion, was already a blur of steel. His off-world longsword, ‘Void-Kiss,’ flickered in wide arcs, deflecting thermal blasts with showers of sparks before biting clean through reinforced ceramite. Two more mercenaries fell, their boots sliding across the slick tile as severed cybernetics sparked. He kicked another back out into the ruined Sinks corridor, sending him tumbling down the shaft into the black.
Orik sprinted toward an alcove near the training floor, a recess he used for salvage bins. He snatched a cluster of crude mining canisters rigged with friction primers from a shelf. These were part of his ‘defensive asset collection.’ He tossed one down the narrow hallway leading towards the Med-Bay, then another towards the bottleneck at the main entrance. The first canister detonated with a concussive crack, peppering the corridor with iron shrapnel. The second burst into thick gray soot, masking the corridor in grit and pulverized drywall.
“Two more cutting through the side passage!” Tarkis bellowed with a grin. “More sport for me, then!”
While Tarkis locked blades with two shield-bearers, a heavy gunner leveled a shoulder-mounted coil cannon. He aimed straight down the expanded corridor connecting the infirmary to the core rooms. “Anchor point identified!” the gunner barked, launching a superheated core.
The projectile streaked through the air, hitting the wall with a horrific *THWUMP*. Instead of exploding outwards, the impact caused the very fabric of reality to ripple and distort. A sickly purple light emanated from the point of impact, and a low, guttural *groan* resonated through the apartment. A hairline fracture, glowing with an unstable violet glare, zipped along the ceiling and down the load-bearing arch. The entire structure shuddered violently, as if a giant had gripped it and given it a good shake.
“The structural anchor!” Zoya shouted, clutching the doorframe as the walls warped. “The seam is shearing apart!”
“Not on my watch!” Orik roared, fueled by a sudden, protective fury. This was *his* property. No corporate drone was going to rip it apart. He flared his embers again, closing the distance and smashing through the surviving operatives. He shattered synthetic breastplates, melted carbine receivers into sludge, and hurled the stragglers against the bulkhead. Tarkis, seeing Orik’s newfound savagery, matched his ferocity, his blade a silver blur that left no one standing.
Within seconds, the foyer floor lay buried beneath smoldering ceramite, shattered rifles, and fallen raiders. Scorched gouges pitted the plaster, predatory vines retracted slowly back toward their pot, and copper stench thickened the air.
Orik stood panting, his knuckles still smoking. He looked at the chaos, at the destroyed door, then at the glowing, unstable crack in the hallway. He wiped a smear of soot from his eyebrow, pulse ticking against his collar.
[OBJECTIVE COMPLETE: HOSTILE EVICTION REPELLED.]
[REWARD: ‘PORTAL HUB’ ROOM ACQUIRED.]
As the System message flashed, a new door, crafted from swirling, obsidian-like material that seemed to absorb all light, materialized silently in the middle of the foyer, right next to the smoking remains of his old door. It hummed with a deep, resonant thrum, like a sleeping cosmic engine. But before Orik could even marvel at the new addition, the entire System interface, which usually glowed a calm azure, turned a horrifying, blood-red.
