Chapter 5 of 10

Hoarder's Dilemma

1.3k words

The Grand Alchemy Lab hummed with a low, vibrant energy, a stark contrast to the rough-hewn stone walls and rusted metal door that marked the apartment’s entrance. Orik Vang ran a hand over a bubbling retort, its glass walls iridescent with a concoction that shifted from amethyst to viridian. “Look at this, Zoya! Blight-Sprout tonics, Elixirs of Twilight-Walk, even a few of those Stabilizing Draughts the Aetherion monopoly charges a fortune for.” Zoya Nim, perched on a lab stool, meticulously tapped data into her wrist-mounted slate. “Yes, Orik, they’re incredibly valuable. Potentially life-changing for your finances, actually. I’ve already got a list of independent brokers in the market for these. We could clear your remaining Sinks debt, even make a down payment on a proper residence above ground.” Orik frowned, pulling a small vial of shimmering liquid from a cooling rack. “Sell them? Why would I sell them? These are *mine*. I earned them. What if I need a Blight-Sprout brew later? Or a Twilight-Walk? What if I get sick and need a dozen Stabilizing Draughts?” He clutched the vial like a child with a coveted toy. “No, we keep them. All of them.” Zoya’s fingers paused over her slate. Her shoulders tightened. “Orik, we are still technically broke. You have an impossible mansion, filled with priceless artifacts, and you’re still eating nutrient paste because you refuse to liquidate *anything*. Your account is running on fumes. We need capital for basic supplies, let alone the next upkeep payment the System will demand.” “We’ll figure it out,” Orik dismissed, already cataloging the various tinctures. “We always do.” Just then, the air shimmered, and a familiar, stark message appeared before them. [UPKEEP PENDING: 72:00:00] [Current Spatial Upkeep: 120,000 Kryx Units] [Urgent Directive: Expose the visiting Heir in the Sinks.] [Failure to comply will result in localized instability and subsequent reclamation of the Grand Alchemy Lab.] Zoya groaned, burying her face in her hands. “Localized instability? They’re going to blow up the lab if we don’t pay up. Orik, this is why we need actual money! Not just magical glass vials!” Orik, however, grinned. “Expose an oligarch heir? That sounds like fun. And look, it’s not ‘reclamation,’ it’s ‘localized instability.’ Sounds like it just gets… wobbly. I’m sure it’ll be fine.” Tarkis Vo appeared silently in the doorway, a half-eaten bag of candied nut-bites in his hand. “Executive heir, you say? High profile. Heavy security. Are we talking about a simple exposure, or something more… *persuasive*?” He gestured with a nut-bite towards a shelf of recently bottled, faintly glowing vials. “Perhaps a few of those ‘Dragonfire Fizz’ concoctions for emphasis?” “Tarkis, don’t encourage him!” Zoya snapped. “Orik, this isn't about fun. This is about survival. Who is this heir, anyway?” “Let me check,” Orik said, pulling up a commlink on his wrist. “Ah, here it is. Heir to the Sylvanus Syndicate, Kresnik, making a ‘humanitarian visit’ to the Sinks. Probably just a PR stunt to boost their stock before the quarterly reports.” He looked at Tarkis, a glint in his eye. “Dragonfire Fizz? Good idea. And maybe some of those ‘Umbral Veil Smoke Bombs’?” “Excellent choices,” Tarkis rumbled, his eyes twinkling. “A direct approach for the escorts, and a subtle egress for the target.” Zoya pinched the bridge of her nose. “Fine. Let’s get this over with. But no unnecessary property damage, Orik. We’re exposing him, not starting a riot.” Two hours later, the grimy, labyrinthine passages of the Sinks teemed with the usual desperate activity, iron pipes groaning overhead under excess sludge. The target's heavily armored motorcade, a stark white anomaly amidst the rust and grime, was due to pass through the notorious ‘Serpent’s Coil’ alleyway. Orik and Zoya, camouflaged in tattered Sinks-dweller clothing, hunkered behind a refuse pile. Tarkis, having ‘rented’ his ‘Whisperwind Blade Art’ skill for a box of savory snack sticks, was a silent silhouette perched on a precariously balanced ventilation pipe above. “Target approaching,” Zoya murmured into her comm bead. “Three armored haulers, four shock troopers on foot, two snipers on the rooftops.” “Snipers are mine,” Tarkis’s voice crackled. “Consider them… distracted.” As the lead transport rumbled past, Orik hurled a Dragonfire Fizz brew. It shattered against the armored plating with a concussion that shook the ground, sending fiery green tendrils licking across the metal. The accompanying troopers staggered, their comms sparking. “Now!” Orik yelled, pulling another handful of glass flasks. He launched a volley of Umbral Veil Smoke Bombs. The alley instantly filled with an oily, black haze that choked visibility and muffled sound. The remaining soldiers, disoriented, barked orders into their comms, but Tarkis’s whispers had already silenced their rooftop support. Through the swirling smoke, Orik, moving with a practiced speed, slipped past the confused sentries and wrenched open the rear door of the third hauler. Inside, the young master, a meticulously groomed man in an expensive synth-silk suit, glared, coughing through the acrid smoke. He fumbled for a sidearm, but Orik was faster, snatching a small, ornate pouch from the seat beside him. It was heavier than it looked, thrumming faintly. “What in the blazes do you think you’re doing, you gutter rat?!” the noble shrieked, his face purpling. “Just getting a closer look at your ‘humanitarian efforts,’ heir,” Orik retorted, holding up the pouch. “Or should I say, your illegal market manipulation?” As the smoke began to dissipate, Zoya, who had slipped inside as well, pointed at the pouch. “Orik, the energy signature… it’s a Class-Gamma Rift Tether! Unstable, barely contained! They’re using these to destabilize local dimensional currents, making air filtration more difficult, driving up subscription prices for the Sylvanus Conglomerate’s ‘pure air’ initiative!” His face drained of color. “Impossible! You can’t prove anything!” But the evidence was right there, humming in Orik’s hand. The armored mercenaries, recovering from the initial blast and smoke, began to converge. Orik met their charge, dodging a stun baton and using the pouch itself to deflect a laser blast. He had no intention of keeping the unstable rift tethers; they were too dangerous. With a sharp snap of his wrists, he hurled the pouch back towards the aristocrat, making sure it landed with enough force to burst open, spilling its contents. The tethers, glowing ominously, were now exposed. The Sinks residents, drawn by the commotion and the strange lights, began to gather. Their hushed whispers quickly turned into a roar of outrage as Zoya, grabbing a comm unit from a fallen sentry, broadcasted their discovery across the local Sinks network, detailing the heir’s scheme and the dangerous, price-gouging tethers. The heir, seeing the tide turn, scrambled out of the carriage and fled, his immaculate suit now smudged with grime and fear. The remaining unit, facing an angry mob and the undeniable evidence of their employer's treachery, beat a hasty retreat. [OBJECTIVE COMPLETE: Corporate Heir Kresnik Volkov exposed.] [REWARD: Vault Room — A secure, dimensionally isolated storage facility, impervious to external detection and internal collapse.] A new door, crafted from burnished alloy with intricate, unreadable glyphs, materialized silently in the corner of his Med-Bay, shimmering with an aura of absolute security. “A vault,” Orik breathed, stepping forward. “A whole vault! Finally, somewhere truly safe for my… *assets*.” He pushed past Zoya, already eager to explore the new expansion, to find the perfect spot for his mana battery, his alien blade, and of course, his growing collection of potions. He didn't notice the tiny, almost invisible glint on the back of his tattered jacket. As Kresnik frantically scrambled through a hidden escape route, he touched a device on his wrist, a sneer twisting his lips. The minuscule tracking drone, barely the size of a dust mot, activated, its signal a faint, persistent hum, pointing directly towards a single, rusty metal door in the heart of the Sinks.
