Chapter 7 of 10
The Hostile Takeover Plan

The crimson interface cast long, bloody shadows across the foyer, bathing the shattered threshold in an angry glare. Dust drifted through the gap where the rusty sheet of galvanized tin used to hang, swirling lazily around the obsidian frame of the freshly bolted Portal Hub.
"A hundred thousand," Zoya muttered, adjusting her spectacles with two trembling fingers. Her stylus hovered over a cracked data-pad, tapping a frenzied, erratic rhythm against the glass. "That isn't rent, Orik. That is an outright liquidation lien. The Sinks will dissolve into a cosmic sinkhole before dawn tomorrow, and take three municipal sectors with us."
Tarkis leaned against the obsidian doorpost, licking powdered cheese off his thumb. He flicked a yellow crumb onto the polished floorboards. "Sounds like an eviction with extra steps. Back in the High Spire of Vorndell, when landlords became unreasonable, we simply chopped down their banquet halls. Quite cathartic, really."
"Nobody is chopping down anything," Orik snapped. He knelt beside a scorched pile of composite armor stripped from the strike team, stuffing detached thermal couplers and severed pneumatic tubes into a mildewed duffel bag. "And we aren't liquidating, either. I kept thirty-two pressurized canisters of industrial solvent from the scrap depot under the bed. We can negotiate."
"He won't take scrap pipe for a cosmic default notice, you idiot!" Zoya threw her hands up, the data-pad nearly slipping from her grip. "Listen to me. The only thing in this city bearing enough concentrated reality-anchor weight to cover a sum like that is a prime root-tether. And there's only one unbonded tap within twenty miles: the central tapping nexus sitting in the penthouse of Apex Tower."
Orik paused, clutching a dented plasma injector to his chest. His fingers curled around the metal casing like claws around gold coins. "The executive suite. Where they siphon the clean troposphere lines."
"Where they bottle the air and auction the pressure gradients to the upper wards, yes," Zoya said, eyes narrowing behind her smudged lenses. "The corporation doesn't just drill into rifts. They anchored a prime fissure straight into their foundation forty years ago. If we seize the valve tap and link it directly to your property ledger, the balance doesn't just clear—it forces a jurisdictional flip. A hostile deed absorption. You don't just pay your arrears; you swallow their siphoning rights whole."

A grease-cold numbness settled across Orik’s collarbones and clamped down hard. The light around his limbs bent outward, folding his silhouette into a translucent ripple that smelled faintly of burnt soot and cold iron.
"Splendid," Tarkis said, unsheathing his notched broadsword with a sharp metallic hiss. "A burglary disguised as an administrative audit. Lead on, landlord. I was promised more fried tubers if we survive the evening."
Leaving the trembling perimeter of the Sinks behind, the trio mounted the municipal freight elevators, rising through rusted iron lattices until the sulfur fog gave way to the cold, pristine clarity of the upper tiers. Korsav’s high crest glittered with glass needles, each spire tethered to the next by skybridges paved in synthetic marble. Up here, citizens inhaled crisp, mint-scented oxygen piped directly into pedestrian tunnels, their wristbands blinking green to indicate paid quotas.
At the foot of the spire, a three-hundred-meter spear of brushed titanium, automated security turrets tracked the plazas with red targeting beams.
"The outer perimeter runs three separate acoustic nets," Zoya whispered, crouched behind a decorative granite planter. "We can't brute-force the gate without triggering the district garrison."
"Who said anything about brute force?" Orik muttered. He unzipped his overstuffed trench coat, revealing an absurd lattice of scavenged junk: half-drained flash-bangs, broken pneumatic pistons, and three glass jars of acidic Grumble-Snapper sap harvested from his greenhouse. "Hold these."
He slung a fist-sized coil of wire stripped from the arena strike team into the primary sensor conduit beneath the pavement. The Ghost-Stitch Cloak muffled the movement, dampening the scrape of steel to absolute silence. With a muttered phrase, he triggered the sap against the junction box. The organic acid ate through insulated alloy within seconds, cutting the local grid and blindfolding the exterior cameras for a clean thirty-second window.
"Move," Orik hissed.
Tarkis cut the service hatch lock with a casual flick of his wrist, the blade parting high-tensile steel like soft lard. They slipped into the service spine, ascending through the private transit tube until the city lights spread beneath them like a carpet of crushed gems.
The penthouse was not an office.
Double doors forged from solid bronze slid apart with a muted pneumatic sigh, revealing an atrium vaulted beneath a dome of reinforced quartz. Cool, hyper-filtered air washed over them, carrying an acrid tang that made Orik’s teeth ache—the smell of ozone, scorched copper, and wet stone. Across the floor, thick conduits the size of ancient oaks were bolted into the marble flags, throbbing with raw, unrefined luminescence as they fed toward a central platform.
Sitting behind an ornate desk carved from petrified ash wood was a figure silhouetted against the glittering panorama of Korsav.
"Director Vane?" Zoya stepped forward, gripping a portable siphon key she had rigged from scrap components. "Step away from the control console. Under municipal salvage protocol four-dash-nine—"
"Salvage protocol?"
The voice sounded like grinding slate dropped into a cement mixer.
The figure stood.
It did not rise with the posture of a soft, desk-bound magnate. The tailored three-piece suit was shredded along the shoulders, split by massive plates of dark, basalt-like chitin that jutted from the skin. The man stood nearly eight feet tall. One side of his face retained the patrician, sneering features of a high-caste financier, but the left side was completely overtaken by an undulating cluster of sapphire-colored sensory stalks and hardened void-matter. A luminescent fluid leaked from his jawline, dripping onto the silk tie pinned to his monstrous chest.
"You think... you can serve papers... to an owner?" the director rasped, his swollen left arm ending in three jagged, bone-like appendages that dripped black frost onto the carpet. "I stopped buying permits ten years ago, Miss Nim. Why purchase an extraction quota when one can simply metabolize the source?"
"He didn't just drill the rift," Orik whispered, his fingers twitching toward the heavy wrench tucked into his belt, hoarder instincts screaming at the sheer, concentrated mass of exotic material grafted into the man’s flesh. "He ate it."
"And now," Vane rumbled, his single human eye rolling back as the blue stalks flared with blinding radiance, "three fresh anomalies wander directly into my processing floor."
With a concussive thud, thick blast plates slammed down over the elevator shaft and the panoramic windows, sealing the penthouse in complete, airtight isolation. The hum of the ceiling vents died instantly, plunging the room into a heavy, suffocating vacuum.
