Chapter 13 of 35
The Shadow's Edge
838 words
Thirty miles north of the Sinkhole Sanctuary, the Shattered Ridge rose like a row of broken black teeth against the bruised twilight sky. Towering basalt canyons channeled the icy wasteland winds, howling through narrow passways and whipping grey ash into thick, blinding clouds.
Amidst the jagged rock faces, bright torchlight flickered. Dozens of iron-clad enforcers moved like worker ants across a massive excavation trench, their heavy pickaxes smashing into the dense, dark earth with rhythmic, metallic thuds. Sparks flew through the dusty air, illuminating the glowing green veins of spirit-ore exposed beneath the shattered rock.
High above the trench, perched on an overhang of solid obsidian, two men stood watching the operation. They wore heavy, embroidered black robes over dark-iron breastplates, their breathing slow and steady despite the freezing wind—Foundation Establishment elders of the Iron-Clad Sect.
"Faster, you dogs!" the younger elder barked, his voice amplified by spiritual energy, echoing down into the canyon. "The patriarch expects ten crates of high-grade spirit-ore before midnight! If the array is delayed, I'll throw three of you into the ore-crusher!"
Below them, tucked inside the pitch-black crevice of an overhang less than five feet from the yelling elder, a patch of shadow rippled.
The Assassin clone was entirely motionless, its lithe form fused with the dark rock wall like a painted silhouette. Through its pale, slitted eyes, the world existed as a web of structural weaknesses, heat signatures, and spiritual currents. Its Shadow Veil passive talent held its heartbeat, body heat, and spiritual presence at absolute zero. The elder, standing mere inches away, was entirely oblivious to the apex predator resting in his shadow.
Miles away, sitting cross-legged on the stone platform of the Sinkhole Sanctuary, Lylin saw through the Assassin's eyes with crystal clarity. The Scholar stood beside him, mapping the canyon layout onto the mental interface as the Assassin gathered visual data.
SYSTEM NOTICE:
TARGET LOCATED: SHATTERED RIDGE SPIRIT VEIN.
VEIN GRADE: MEDIUM (ESTIMATED YIELD: 5,000 SPIRIT CRYSTALS).
HOSTILE FORCE DETECTED: 2 FOUNDATION ESTABLISHMENT (EARLY STAGE), 42 BODY REFINEMENT ENFORCERS.
DEFENSIVE ARRAY: INCOMPLETE (3 OF 4 NODE STAKES PLACED).
"They are rushed," Lylin observed internally, his voice echoing in the shared neural network. "They rushed here to secure the vein before other regional sects realized the Cloud-Rest Guild fell."
"Indeed, Host," the Scholar replied through the link. "Their defensive ward is incomplete. The northern sector of the trench lacks boundary stakes. Furthermore, their eastern supply tent holds six refined spirit-crystal crates ready for transport."
Lylin’s dark eyes narrowed into cold, calculating slits. "They have two Foundation Establishment elders. Engaging them directly in an open field risks damaging our clone or alerting their main sect headquarters. Assassin... what is the status of their perimeter patrols?"
The Assassin shifted its gaze slightly, its pale eyes scanning the dark perimeter of the camp. "Three guards every ten minutes along the eastern ridge," the Assassin whispered silently into the link. "They are exhausted from the march. Their focus is sloppy."
"Good," Lylin commanded, his tone dripping with quiet ruthless intent. "We do not fight the elders. We bleed them from the edges. Assassin, target the eastern supply tent. Eliminate the perimeter guards silently. Steal the refined spirit-crystals, sabotage their excavation equipment, and retreat into the shadows."
"Your will be done, Host," the Assassin breathed.
A gust of howling wind blew through the canyon, swirling a thick curtain of ash across the obsidian overhang. The elder blinked, adjusting his fur mantle against the sudden chill.
In that single second of obscured vision, the shadow behind him detached from the wall. It glided down the sheer cliff face like liquid ink, dropping fifty feet into the darkness of the lower canyon without making a sound.
Reaching the foot of the eastern ridge, the Assassin merged instantly with the shadow cast by a massive supply crate. Ten feet away, an Iron-Clad enforcer leaned against his spear, yawning heavily as he rubbed his tired eyes.
The Assassin didn't draw a blade. It didn't need one.
Extending a hand from the pitch-black shadow beneath the crate, the Assassin's fingers turned into dark, vaporous tendrils that wrapped tightly around the guard's ankle. Before the man could utter a sound or drop his weapon, he was dragged backward straight into the solid shadow of the cliff face—disappearing beneath the earth like a sinking stone.
Inside the shadowy void beneath the rock, a quick, silent snap of the neck ended the guard's life instantly.
SYSTEM NOTIFICATION:
TARGET ELIMINATED (BODY REFINEMENT LEVEL 4).
ENERGY ABSORBED: +5 UNITS.
HOST CURRENT ENERGY: 55/100.
In the subterranean sanctuary thirty miles away, Lylin felt the small surge of fresh energy flow into his core. His lips curled into a faint, grim smile. The system didn't just generate clones; it harvested the life force of his victims to fuel its growth.
"Continue," Lylin willed coldly through the dark. "Clean out the ridge."
Moving like a ghost through the flickering firelight, the Assassin glided toward the second guard, leaving only silence, ash, and empty shadows in its wake.
