Chapter 12 of 35
The Rogue Thread
740 words
The subterranean cavern lay silent under the soft azure glow of the spiritual pool. Deep within his dark mindscape, Lylin watched the translucent digital numbers tumble toward zero. His breathing remained slow and measured, each inhalation drawing in the refined mist that lingered above the ley-line node.
Time until refresh: 00:00:03... 00:00:01... 00:00:00.
SYSTEM NOTIFICATION:
DAILY REFRESH COMPLETE.
HOST ENERGY RESTORED: 100/100.
AVAILABLE CLONES: 1/1.
A cool, invigorating current swept through Lylin’s meridians, washing away the lingering fatigue of the past hours. Beside the raised stone platform, the Scholar clone paused its calculations at the metallic array, turning its calm, sapphire eyes toward its creator. The Warrior clone remained rooted at the hidden entrance, a silent sentinel immersed in the dark earth.
"The time has come," Lylin murmured, his raspy voice echoing faintly against the damp walls. "A phantom to walk where light cannot reach."
Without hesitation, he focused his consciousness onto the central system command.
"CREATE CLONE."
Fifty units of energy drained instantly from his reservoir, dropping the display counter to 50/100. A dark, vaporous mist rose from the stone floor beside the spiritual pool, swirling in a silent vortex. Unlike the fierce, radiant heat haze that had forged the Warrior, this formation was utterly soundless. Shadowy tendrils coalesced into a slender, lithe frame. Hair black as pitch, angular features, identical physique—yet as the eyes snapped open, they revealed slitted pupils of pale, milky white that seemed to absorb the light around them.
SYSTEM NOTICE:
CLONE THREE GENERATED.
CLASS: ASSASSIN / RECONNAISSANCE.
TALENT: SHADOW VEIL (RARE).
PASSIVE EFFECT: COMPLETE ERASURE OF LIFE SIGNATURE AND SOUND WITHIN SHADOWS; CAN PHASE THROUGH SOLID MATTER FOR 3 SECONDS (COOLDOWN: 1 HOUR).
Lylin’s eyes flared with cold satisfaction. The system’s randomness was proving terrifyingly precise. With a brute-force guardian, a tactical strategist, and now an invisible phantom, his hidden triad was complete.
"Host," the Assassin clone spoke. Its voice was a quiet rasp, barely louder than a breath of wind through dry grass. It dropped to one knee, lowering its head in absolute submission. "Your shadow awaits your command."
Through the neural link, Lylin instantly integrated his consciousness with the third creation. The world shifted into a stark, high-contrast monochrome. Color vanished; instead, every shadow cast by the glowing ley-line pool stretched outward like pools of deep liquid ink. To the Assassin, those shadows were not mere absences of light—they were physical paths, corridors through which its body could effortlessly flow.
"The Iron-Clad Sect moves toward the Shattered Ridge," Lylin commanded silently through the mental network. "They seek the unsealed spirit vein. Scholar, provide the coordinates."
The Scholar raised a hand, sending a subtle thread of blue spiritual energy into the Assassin’s mind. "Thirty miles north. Terrain: jagged basalt canyons and dense ash clouds. Defensive force: two Foundation Establishment elders, forty Body Refinement guards."
"You will not engage their main force," Lylin ordered the Assassin, his tone dripping with cold calculation. "Observe their excavation. Locate their supply caches, map their perimeter guards, and wait in the dark. When their blood flows, you will harvest what remains."
"As you command, Host," the Assassin whispered.
With a fluid, haunting movement, the Assassin rose and stepped backward into the deep shadow cast by the cave wall. The moment its heel touched the darkness, its physical form dissolved into black mist, vanishing entirely from sensory perception. Not a ripple disturbed the air; not a single grain of dust fell from the ceiling. Even the Scholar’s Spiritual Perception barely registered a faint, receding tremor in the spatial fabric.
Lylin leaned back against the cool stone wall, a grim, ghost-like smile touching his lips. Deep within the lower human realm of the Azure Cloud Domain, the Iron-Clad Sect believed they were the undisputed predators, carving up the corpse of the Cloud-Rest Guild. They had no idea that an invisible thread had just been woven into their ranks—a thread tied directly to a puppeteer hiding beneath the ash.
Far above the subterranean base, high in the storm-swept mountain peaks that ringed the desolate valley, the ancient three-headed serpent shifted its colossal weight once more. Thousands of petrified black scales ground against ancient stone with a sound like rolling thunder. Its central head, crowned with three golden horns, lowered slowly toward the northern horizon. Its liquid-gold eyes tracked a faint, imperceptible shadow gliding seamlessly through the grey dust of the wasteland—a shadow that possessed no heartbeat, no warmth, and no soul.
