Chapter 14 of 35
The Ghost Harvest
924 words
Shadows clung to the eastern perimeter like stagnant water. Moving with eerie, liquid grace, the Assassin clone flowed from one dark crevice to the next, a phantom weaving through the blind spots of the Iron-Clad Sect’s defenses.
Twenty yards from the main excavation pit, two enforcers stood beside a stacked pile of heavy iron pickaxes and array stakes. One was adjusting his leather armor while the other grumbled quietly under his breath about the freezing wind.
"The elders are paranoid," the grumbling guard muttered, spitting a dark blob of phlegm into the ash. "The Cloud-Rest Guild is dead. Who else would dare touch a vein claimed by the Iron-Clad—"
He never finished the sentence.
A pale, slender hand emerged directly from the shadow cast by the weapons stack behind him. Calloused fingers clamped tightly over his mouth, smothering his voice instantly, while a dark, vaporous blade formed from pure shadow energy pierced through the side of his neck. Simultaneously, the Assassin's physical form materialized behind the second guard. Before the man could even turn his head, a swift, brutal twist broke his neck with a muffled crack.
The Assassin dragged both bodies deeper into the black hollow beneath the rock ledge, stripping their storage pouches in two fluid motions.

Miles away in the Sinkhole Sanctuary, Lylin sat cross-legged on his stone platform, absorbing the influx of raw energy. The subtle warmth flowing through his meridians strengthened his physical vessel, making his breath deeper and his mind sharper.
"The eastern perimeter is clear," the Assassin reported silently through the mental link, its slitted, milky-white eyes scanning the dark supply tent just ahead. "The refined spirit-crystal crates are unguarded."
"Proceed," Lylin commanded coldly. "Take everything. Leave nothing behind that can fuel their expansion."
The Assassin glided inside the thick canvas tent. Six heavy wooden crates reinforced with brass bands sat stacked against the center pole, radiating a faint, cool luminescence. Inside lay over three thousand refined spirit-crystals—a fortune that could fund a small sect's operations for months.
With a wave of its hand, the Assassin activated the storage pouches seized from the dead guards. The air inside the tent distorted as crate after crate was swept into the spatial pockets, vanishing into the dark.
Suddenly, a heavy footstep sounded right outside the tent entrance.
"Junior Brother, grab the extra torch oil from the supply—"
A third-stage Body Refinement guard pulled back the tent flap and froze. He stared at the empty space where the six massive crates had been sitting just seconds prior. Standing in the center of the vacant room was a dark, slender figure with pale, slitted eyes that absorbed the dim torchlight.
The guard’s eyes widened in sheer horror. His mouth opened to scream an alarm to the elders outside. "ENEM—"
PHASE.
The Assassin’s rare passive talent activated instantly. For three seconds, its physical form turned ethereal, phasing directly through the solid air and spatial gap between them. Before the guard’s vocal cords could finish the second syllable, the Assassin’s hand passed through his chest armor like smoke, solidifying inside his thoracic cavity and crushing his heart instantly.
The guard collapsed like a sack of stones, his unfinished scream dying as a wet gasp.

Outside, the wind roared through the basalt canyons, masking the soft thud of the falling body. Up on the obsidian overhang, the two Foundation Establishment elders remained completely oblivious, their attention fixed entirely on the main trench below.
"Scholar," Lylin willed through the link from his subterranean throne. "We have secured the energy crates and cleared their supply depot. Do we sabotage their excavation or withdraw?"
"Withdrawal is optimal, Host," the Scholar clone replied, its voice resonating smoothly within Lylin's mind space. "The disappearance of six crates and four guards will cause immediate panic and internal suspicion among their ranks. They will blame internal traitors or remnant Cloud-Rest Guild assassins. Let them waste their strength hunting ghosts while we digest these gains."
Lylin’s lips curved into a dark, satisfied smile. "Agreed. Assassin, retreat to the perimeter shadow. Return to the sanctuary via the underground ley-line channels."
"Understood, Host," the Assassin whispered.
Stepping over the dead guard, the phantom melted back into the pitch-black shadows of the canyon wall, disappearing without leaving a single footprint, drop of blood, or trace of spiritual aura behind.
An hour later, a terrified shout echoed across the Shattered Ridge as the Iron-Clad elders finally discovered the empty supply tent and the missing guards. Enraged roars shattered the night sky as the elders unleashed their spiritual pressure, cursing the unknown thieves who had robbed them under their very noses.
Far below the chaotic surface, inside the silent Sinkhole Sanctuary, the Assassin materialized out of the shadows cast by the azure pool. It dropped to one knee before Lylin, placing three heavy, bulging spirit pouches onto the cold stone floor.
Lylin looked down at the glittering pile of spirit-crystals. His initial energy reserves were overflowing, his intelligence network was expanding, and his three clones stood bound to his single will—Warrior, Scholar, and Assassin.
Above the valley of death, high in the storm-wrapped peaks, the ancient three-headed serpent closed its central golden eye. The tiny spark born in the ash was no longer just a flicker. It had begun to hunt in the dark.
