Chapter 11 of 35
Echoes of the Web

The subterranean chamber settled into a tense, rhythmic order. Near the edge of the azure spiritual pool, the Scholar clone stood over the three refugees, its deep sapphire eyes glowing as it processed a continuous stream of information. The Guild leader, overwhelmed by the Scholar's calm yet relentless interrogation, detailed everything—sect boundaries, trade routes, the locations of hidden resource veins, and the internal power struggles of the lower human realm known as the Azure Cloud Domain.
Sitting upon the raised stone platform, Lylin absorbed the data in real time through his direct neural link. The information mapped itself seamlessly onto the visual interface in his mind space, expanding the newly acquired Spirit-Vein Map into a comprehensive tactical blueprint.
SYSTEM UPDATE:
MAP DATA INTEGRATED: AZURE CLOUD DOMAIN (HUMAN REALM 1 OF 11).
KEY FACTIONS IDENTIFIED: IRON-CLAD SECT (EXPANSIONIST), CLOUD-REST GUILD (DESTROYED), BLOOD-MOON CULT (SHADOW OPERATIVES).
STRATEGIC ENERGY NODES LOCATED: 3 UNGUARDED LOW-GRADE VEINS.
Lylin’s dark eyes opened, gleaming with cold calculation. The Azure Cloud Domain was merely a stepping stone, the lowest of the eleven human worlds, yet its turmoil offered the perfect cover. The destruction of the Cloud-Rest Guild by the Iron-Clad Sect had created a power vacuum. While the major sects slaughtered each other over visible surface resources, Lylin could quietly occupy the underground ley-lines, expanding his reach without attracting the attention of higher realm entities.
He glanced toward the corner of the room where the injured female cultivator lay. Under the influence of the mist rising from the spiritual pool, her ragged breathing had stabilized. Her younger companion sat beside her, watching Lylin with a mix of awe and lingering terror. They were broken remnants of a fallen faction, but to Lylin, they were something far more useful: potential outer proxies.
"Host," the Scholar’s voice echoed directly within Lylin's mind, bypassing spoken words. "The interrogation is complete. The Iron-Clad Sect is currently mobilizing its forces toward the Shattered Ridge, thirty miles north of our location. They seek to unseal a medium-grade spirit vein previously guarded by the Cloud-Rest Guild."
Lylin shifted his gaze to the Scholar. "What is the defensive strength at the Shattered Ridge?"
"Two Foundation Establishment elders and roughly forty Body Refinement enforcers," the Scholar replied instantly. "Their primary force is distracted by the main remnant forces of the Guild. The ridge itself is lightly guarded."
Lylin leaned back into the shadows, his mind weighing the risk against the reward. A medium-grade spirit vein possessed fifty times the energy density of the small ley-line node beneath his Sinkhole Sanctuary. Securing it would drastically accelerate his system’s daily energy generation, allowing him to unlock higher-tier clone templates and advanced system functions.
However, direct confrontation at his current strength was inefficient. The Warrior clone was powerful, but a single operative could not overwhelm an entrenched force of forty cultivators without sustaining severe damage or exposing the system's existence.
"Patience," Lylin willed through the link. "We do not fight their wars. We harvest their shadow."
He checked the internal system timer.
Time until refresh: 02:15:10.
In a little over two hours, dawn would break across the wasteland once more, granting him his third clone.
"Scholar," Lylin commanded aloud, his voice smooth and commanding. "When the next creation cycle finishes, I will require a specialist in stealth and reconnaissance. We will place a phantom at the Shattered Ridge before the Iron-Clad Sect even completes their excavation."
"Understood, Host," the Scholar bowed slightly. "I will prepare the preliminary array coordinates to mask the third clone's deployment aura."
While the Scholar returned to its work at the metallic disc, Lylin directed his attention to the Warrior clone. Stationed at the entrance crevice, the Warrior maintained an unyielding vigil. Its senses extended outward into the grey wasteland, tracking the distant movements of beast packs and stray cultivators moving through the ash fields.
Through the Warrior's perception, Lylin felt the subtle, ambient laws of this Immortal World. The air was rich with spiritual energy, but it was violent, unrefined, and choked with death aura from ancient wars. Standard cultivators spent decades filtering this energy through grueling meditation to advance their cultivation. Lylin, however, bypassed this limitation entirely. The system acted as a perfect filter, converting raw environmental energy directly into clean, usable system units.
A faint shudder rippled through the floor of the sanctuary, so subtle that the human refugees didn't even notice it. But Lylin felt it instantly.
Deep beneath the mountain range miles away, the ancient three-headed serpent shifted once again. It was not moving toward the sanctuary, but its massive, petrified scales scraped against the roots of the world, releasing a low, sub-audible hum that resonated along the ley-lines.
Lylin’s eyes narrowed into dark slits. That creature was an ancient power, an entity whose existence far surpassed the Foundation Establishment bugs fighting on the surface. It was a reminder of the true scale of the nineteen realms—eleven human worlds, eight Immortal realms, and countless ancient horrors sleeping in the dark.
He was still small. A single spark amidst a field of towering, ancient trees. But a single spark, if nurtured in the dark, could burn down entire realms.
"Let them fight," Lylin whispered into the quiet cavern, his fingers tightening against the cold stone platform. "Let the sects bleed each other dry. Every corpse they leave behind is fertilizer for our roots."
He closed his eyes, settling into a meditative state as the system counter steadily ticked down toward the arrival of his third extension. The foundation was set, the intelligence was gathered, and the hidden puppeteer was ready to weave his first true trap in the light above.
