Chapter 10 of 35

Subterranean Judgment

971 words

The heavy, metallic tang of blood mingled with the acrid scent of burnt flesh as the Warrior clone stood motionless over the three fallen Iron-Clad operatives. Its chest rose and fell in a slow, rhythmic cadence, the crimson glow of its Infused Flame Body gradually dimming into a low, smoldering ember. Before the kneeling refugees, the Warrior extended a massive, calloused hand. It did not utter a word—no demand, no threat, no boast. The absolute, mechanical silence was far more terrifying than any cruel laughter. The Guild leader, his face pale and slick with cold sweat, lifted the silk-wrapped scroll with both hands. His arms trembled violently. "P-Please, Senior..." he stammered, keeping his forehead pressed against the blood-stained ash. "The Spirit-Vein Map of the Southern Reach... it is yours. We ask only for our lives." The Warrior's fingers closed around the jade-encrusted scroll. The moment its skin made contact, a subtle pulse of blue light rippled through the air as the Scholar clone, monitoring from the depths below, stripped the lingering soul-mark from the container, verifying its authenticity in a fraction of a second. SYSTEM NOTIFICATION: RESOURCE ACQUIRED: SPIRIT-VEIN MAP (SOUTHERN REACH - LOWER HUMAN REALM). DATA ANALYSIS IN PROGRESS... MAP CONTAINS 14 UNCLAIMED LOW-GRADE SPIRIT NODE LOCATIONS, 3 SECT TERRITORIES, AND 1 ANCIENT LEY-LINE JUNCTION. Deep within the Sinkhole Sanctuary, Lylin’s dark eyes reflected the golden interface text floating before him. A resource map of this magnitude was an extraordinary prize. It provided the exact blueprint required to seed his future clones across strategic energy nodes without blindly wandering through a hostile world. "Bring them below," Lylin commanded silently. "If they remain on the surface, their corpses or their presence will attract the next wave of Iron-Clad pursuers." Above, the Warrior clone did not offer the refugees a choice. With a swift, fluid motion, it seized the Guild leader by the back of his collar while its other arm effortlessly gathered the injured woman and her younger companion. Ignoring their sharp gasps of panic, the Warrior turned and carried them toward the hidden fissure in the rock wall, slipping smoothly into the dark subterranean passageway. The descent was cold and claustrophobic. The smell of surface ash quickly vanished, replaced by the damp, crisp scent of the ley-line's spiritual mist. When the Warrior finally set them down upon the smooth floor of the central chamber, the three refugees collapsed in a heap, their eyes wide with disorientation and awe. Glowing channels of azure fluid flowed through the stone floor, converging into the central pool. Standing beside the pedestal was another figure—identical in height, face, and features to the terrifying flame warrior that had rescued them, yet dressed in simple dark garments, its eyes shimmering with a cold, intellectual sapphire light. And sitting cross-legged on the raised stone platform at the heart of the sanctuary was the third identical face. Lylin leaned forward slightly, resting his chin on his steepled fingers. His expression was calm, almost detached, yet his presence commanded absolute authority within the chamber. The two clones stood on either side of him like silent, unyielding statues—one representing destruction, the other representing intellect. The Guild leader stared from the Warrior to the Scholar, and finally to Lylin. Terror, confusion, and utter disbelief warred across his face. "T-Triplets...?" the Guild leader whispered, his voice cracking in the quiet cavern. "No... your aura... your faces... you are..." "You are in no position to ask questions," Lylin said smoothly, his raspy voice cutting through the damp silence like a chilled blade. "You came to my doorstep bringing blood and pursuers. I eliminated your enemies and secured your map. Your lives are currently a debt owed to me." The younger cultivator pulled his injured sister closer, his teeth chattering. "We... we are disciples of the Cloud-Rest Guild! Our sect leader—" "Is dead," Lylin interrupted coldly. "Your main hall was reduced to ash three nights ago. You have no sect, no backing, and no realm council coming to save you. The Iron-Clad Sect holds the surface. You are ghosts." The truth struck the refugees like a physical blow. The Guild leader slumped, his shoulders trembling as the last embers of hope vanished from his eyes. Lylin's words were harsh, but they were undisputed reality. "I do not waste resources," Lylin continued, his gaze drifting over the three wounded mortals. "You have knowledge of the surrounding sects, the local geography, and the political climate of this lower human realm. You will provide that knowledge to my Scholar." He paused, letting the heavy silence settle over the room before adding his final condition. "In exchange, you will be permitted to heal in this sanctuary. You will drink from the spiritual pool, recover your breath, and live. But understand this: you will never leave this underground network without my permission. If you attempt to flee, or if you expose the existence of this place..." Lylin didn't finish the sentence. Beside him, the Warrior clone's fists ignited with a brief, terrifying burst of crimson flame, illuminating the dark stone walls with flickering shadows. The Guild leader bowed deeply once more, his tears mixing with the grime on his face. "We submit to Senior's will! We will serve... we will tell you everything!" "Good," Lylin murmured, closing his eyes as he leaned back into the shadows. "Scholar, extract the information. Warrior, maintain guard at the perimeter." Outside the Sinkhole Sanctuary, the pale morning light of the Immortal World hit the distant mountain peaks. High above the clouds, the three-headed serpent shifted its colossal frame, its petrified scales scraping against the ancient rock. Its golden eyes lingered on the valley of death below, sensing that the tiny, isolated spark of flame was no longer just surviving—it had taken root, formed a node, and begun to absorb the blood of the world.
