Chapter 9 of 35

Clash in the Ash

1.1k words

The atmosphere above the subterranean sanctuary grew heavy with the suffocating pressure of raw killing intent. The cold wind whipped grey dust across the cracked earth, swirling around the three armored enforcers of the Iron-Clad Sect as they closed the distance. Their serrated broadswords dragged along the scorched stone, leaving trail lines of dark, crackling energy that hissed against the cold ash. The leader of the Cloud-Rest Guild stood his ground, his knuckles white around the grip of his shattered blade. Blood dripped steadily from his torn sleeve, pattering against the dust. "You think the Realm Council won't notice our disappearance?" he spat, his voice trembling despite his fierce glare. "The Spirit-Vein Map is sealed with our patriarch's soul-mark! You cannot open it!" "The patriarch is dead, boy," the lead Iron-Clad operative rasped, his voice echoing from behind a thick, dark-iron visor. "And his soul-mark burned away along with your sect's main hall three nights ago. Hand over the scroll, or I will flay your companions alive while you watch." Behind him, the two wounded refugees cowered against the crumbling wall. The injured woman let out a weak, agonizing cough, her breathing growing shallower by the second. Her companion reached into his inner robes, his fingers desperately clutching a glowing, jade-encrusted scroll wrapped in faded silk. Beneath their feet, deep within the silent shadows of the earth, Lylin sat cross-legged on his stone platform. His eyes were closed, but his consciousness was fully merged with the Warrior clone stationed at the concealed crevice. Through the shared link, Lylin felt every heartbeat, every shift in weight, and every ripple of spiritual energy occurring on the surface. The Scholar clone stood at his side, its blue-glowing eyes reflecting the complex tactical streams running through its mind. "Host," the Scholar murmured softly through their mental bond. "The Iron-Clad pursuers possess late-stage Body Refinement cultivation. Their armor is reinforced with low-grade black iron, resistant to standard physical impacts. However, their joint mobility is restricted, and their heat tolerance is exceptionally low." "A perfect target for the Flame Body," Lylin replied in his mind, his tone devoid of warmth. "Warrior, position yourself beneath the lead operative. Strike the moment his guard drops." Through the neural link, the Warrior clone acknowledged the command without a sound. Its body, built from dark, shifting system energy and imbued with the Infused Flame Body talent, began to hum. The heat radiating from its core was drawn inward, concentrating into its fists until its skin turned a deep, molten crimson. It moved through the underground crevice like a ghost, slipping beneath the thin layer of rubble directly beneath the surface battleground. Above, the lead Iron-Clad enforcer raised his massive broadsword. The blade surged with dark, oppressive spiritual energy, aiming directly for the wounded Guild leader's neck. "Die, rat!" CRACK. The earth beneath the lead enforcer exploded in a violent eruption of shattered rock, white-hot ash, and roaring flame. Before the lead operative could even process the sudden burst of heat, two molten fists shot up from the collapsing ground, slamming directly into the chest plate of his iron armor. The brutal impact shattered the heavy metal like brittle glass. Intense, searing heat instantly melted the inner lining, driving red-hot metal directly into the operative's lungs and heart. A choked, muffled scream died in the man's throat as he was launched backward, crashing onto the ash field like a lifeless ragdoll, his armor smoking and charred black. "Enemy ambush!" the second Iron-Clad enforcer roared, instinctively drawing his massive blade up in a defensive stance. The surviving refugees gasped in sheer terror and disbelief. From the burning crater stood a towering figure—a warrior clad in nothing but dark, shifting shadows, its eyes blazing with an terrifying orange-crimson glow. It possessed no weapon, but its very presence radiated an overwhelming aura of pure, unadulterated heat that instantly distorted the freezing air of the wasteland. The Warrior clone did not speak. It did not posture. It moved with lethal, cold precision. With a explosive leap that shattered the ground beneath its boots, the clone closed the ten-yard gap in a fraction of a second. The second Iron-Clad enforcer swung his broadsword in a desperate, wide arc, the heavy blade cutting through the air with a whistling screech. The Warrior clone did not dodge. It raised its left forearm, allowing the heavy iron blade to slam directly into its arm. The metal bit deep, but before the blade could sever bone, the clone's Infused Flame Body unleashed its latent power. White-hot crimson fire surged along the iron blade, traveling up to the enforcer's gauntlet in a heartbeat. The enforcer screamed as his metal gloves melted onto his flesh. He tried to release the sword, but it was too late. The Warrior clone's right hand shot forward like a striking viper, its fingers hardened like molten steel, plunging straight through the enforcer's throat guard. Blood sizzled and turned to steam instantly as the second operative fell, thrashing weakly before going still. The third Iron-Clad pursuer, horrified by the instant annihilation of his comrades, stumbled backward. His confidence vanished, replaced by an ancient, primal fear. "What... what monster are you?!" he shrieked, throwing his weapon aside and turning to flee toward the edge of the crater. "Scholar, block his escape route," Lylin commanded from the subterranean chamber. A thin, barely visible thread of blue spiritual energy shot out from the crevice, forming a subtle array symbol on the ground before the fleeing man. The earth softened beneath his feet, trapping his legs in dense, mud-like rock. Before the operative could cut himself free, the Warrior clone appeared behind him like an executioner. A single, heavy strike of its molten palm crushed the back of the man's skull, ending his life instantly. Silence returned to the ruined valley, broken only by the howling wind and the soft crackle of lingering embers. The three surviving Cloud-Rest Guild refugees stared at the towering, glowing figure in absolute silence. Their breath hitched in their throats. They had escaped one pack of wolves only to stand in the presence of a silent demon. The Guild leader fell to his knees, clutching his chest, his eyes wide with terror as the Warrior clone turned its glowing, vacant eyes toward them. He held up the glowing silk-wrapped scroll with trembling hands. "O-Great Senior..." the Guild leader choked out, bowing his head until his forehead touched the bloody ash. "Thank you for saving our lives! Please... take this Spirit-Vein Map! Take everything we have! Just... spare my Junior Sister and brother!" Deep within the subterranean sanctuary, Lylin opened his eyes. A cold, calculating smile touched his lips as he stood up from the stone platform. "Secure the scroll," Lylin willed through the link. "And bring them down."
