Chapter 9 of 10
Bullet Hell
1.4k words
The subterranean vault tilted violently, sending Ziven skidding across fractured quartz. Dust, thick and choking, rained from the calcified vault ceiling, sparkling with trapped light. Through the translucent rock walls, the distant, glittering lights of Velska, the once-floating landmass, accelerated their descent. They were no longer suspended; they were plummeting.
Vytas, freed from his chains, no longer writhed. He hung in the center of the hall, a gaunt, dark silhouette against the swirling vortex of the core, his gaze smoldering with ancient fury. His gaze locked onto Ziven, a living accusation.
“Another puppet of the Synod,” Vytas’s voice echoed, devoid of the earlier desperation, now a low, resonant growl that vibrated through Ziven’s bones. “You shattered my torment, only to deliver the final blow. You think to claim my essence now that the chains are broken?”
Ziven brushed dust from his jacket, ignoring the accusation. “Dude, you gotta chill. It was a Goomba stomp, not some elaborate assassination. And if you think I want your ‘essence,’ you’re way off. I just want to fix this server-wipe situation.”
Vytas didn’t listen. The air around him rippled, then pulsed. Dark motes of black light, like solidified shadows, coalesced into an expanding ring. They shot outwards by the thousands, a curtain of lethal darts screaming toward Ziven.
[DANGER: Proj_Spam – 'Hollow King’s Despair'. Dodge pattern: Spiral Weave. Estimated damage: Fatal.]
Ziven’s eyes lit up. “Oh, it’s a bullet hell! Nice! Took you long enough to get to the interesting mechanics, boss.” He immediately began moving, his steps light and precise, weaving through the deadly storm. The dark spheres sliced past, some so close he felt the air crackle against his cheek. He didn’t just dodge; he *danced*, a smirk playing on his lips. “Rhythm game, huh? Pretty standard, but the hitboxes are surprisingly tight for an unoptimized build.”
Each black dart carried enough force to tear through stone. Ziven, however, treated them like an intricate laser grid at an underground rave, tilting his chin as he analyzed the telemetry. “Hmm, phase one is always a simple spiral. Let’s see if you mix it up, Vytas. Don’t be a one-trick pony.”
Vytas, his form blurring with abyssal gloom, unleashed a second wave, denser and faster, converging from multiple angles. The hall filled with the whistling of passing death. Ziven twisted, crouched, and leaped, his movements fluid and impossible. He timed his dodges not by instinct, but by calculation, predicting the next burst before it even fired.
“Still spiral, but with a scattershot overlay,” Ziven muttered, narrowly avoiding a cluster that would have vaporized his left arm. “Amateur hour, Vytas. Is this really all the ‘Hollow King’ can do? You’re supposed to be a legendary Raid Boss, not some mini-game warm-up.”
The verbal jabs only deepened Vytas’s rage. A guttural roar tore from his throat, shaking the stone floor. He raised his hands, and the dark darts swelled in size, becoming jagged, tainted spikes of pure malice. They moved with a predatory intelligence, curving and tracking Ziven’s movements. The falling continent groaned louder, metal screeching against rock as Velska buckled under the strain.
[WARNING: 'Hollow King’s Despair' – Barrage Tracking Initiated. Suggest evasive maneuvers with unpredictable vector changes.]
“Predictable vector changes? Please, Beta UI, I’m practically writing the manual here,” Ziven scoffed, pulling a small, corked vial from his inventory. It glowed with pale amber draught – a 'Greater Mana Restorative' he’d looted from the Spire’s treasury. “Now, how to force-feed a blue flask to an actively aggroed boss…”
He attempted to lob the vial, but a concentrated volley of jagged shards forced him behind a granite rib. The glass clinked harmlessly against the stone, well short of Vytas.
“Ugh, this is why I hate bosses with persistent aggro. No window for buffs, no debuff application, just endless ranged spam,” Ziven complained, peeking around the corner. “Come on, just a moment’s pause, buddy! I’m trying to help you keep the game alive here!”
Suddenly, a distortion rippled where Ziven had dropped into the abyss. Princess Milda, her cheeks caked in grit and gray ash, stumbled through the portal, Snax slithering out right behind her. She froze at the threshold, taking in the falling world, Vytas’s furious assault, and Ziven dancing through the storm like a lunatic.
“Ziven! The world… it’s ending!” Milda cried, her voice barely audible over the roaring wind and the thrum of Vytas’s power. She clutched a heavy, leather-bound account book to her chest – the tainted financial record of the Synod, scorched and reeking of sulfur.
Snax, meanwhile, sniffed the air, his six legs wriggling with excitement. The black flecks emanating from Vytas seemed to hold a particular allure. He whined, nudging Ziven’s leg, begging for a taste.
“Snax, no. This isn’t a curse. This is… bad juju that holds the world together, apparently,” Ziven said, still dodging. “Milda! You made it! Got that… financial… thingy?”
“Yes! The registry!” Milda shouted, scanning the vast hollow. Her eyes landed on a shattered pedestal near Vytas, glowing faintly with residual mana. “This… this must be where they drained him! I can reverse it!”
Ignoring the hail of lethal bolts, Milda sprinted toward the pedestal, teeth bared against the wind. One of Vytas’s larger dark spires swerved, locking onto her. Ziven, seeing the danger, shouted, “Milda, look out! It’s tracking!”
But Milda was already there. With a grunt, she slammed the heavy volume onto the pedestal. The leather sizzled, smoke curling from its binding. Ancient glyphs, once used by the Synod to bleed Vytas’s core, flared a rancid viridian. The siphon reversed. Centuries of stolen planetary essence surged backward, funneling straight into Vytas’s starved frame.
[SERVER EVENT: 'Mana Reversion Triggered' – Mana Grid Rerouted. Resource transfer: Critical.]
Milda cried out in pain as the backlash lashed back at her. Her hands blistered and stray strands of hair crisped, but she held firm, pressing her palms against the blistering leather. “Take it, Vytas! Take back what is yours!”
Raw vitality flooded Vytas, a blinding flash that momentarily smothered his abyssal shroud. The bullet hell paused for a fraction of a second, every shard suspended in midair. The surrounding cavern hummed with tectonic resonance. For a moment, Ziven thought it had worked. The world, still falling, didn’t seem to be accelerating quite as fast.
Then, with a roar that was more animalistic than before, Vytas’s eyes flared, a blinding white light that quickly dulled back to furious black. The frozen shards reignited with renewed malice, snapping forward with twice their previous velocity. The mana influx, far from calming him, had only fueled his maddened assault. He perceived it as another, more potent, attack from the Synod, a final attempt to break him.
“Are you serious? He’s still aggroed?!” Ziven yelled, exasperated, barely managing to duck a spear of shadow that would have skewered his head. “Dude, I just poured a truckload of healing into you! Why won’t you let me help?!”
[SYSTEM ALERT: 'Hollow King Vytas' – Status: Frenzied. Mana Surge has amplified hostility. Melee range required for forced item application.]
Ziven read the alert, then glanced at the glowing glass vial resting uselessly among the stones. He couldn’t close the distance; Vytas’s ranged fire was simply too dense. If he tried to run in, he’d be vaporized. There was no opening. No lull. No weakness to exploit. Just pure, unadulterated, world-ending rage.
“Fine,” Ziven snarled, a cold, calculating gleam in his eyes. “You want melee, you’ll get melee.”
He scanned the debris. His gaze fell upon a discarded ceremonial lance, one of the Synod’s polearms, half-buried in a mineral fissure. Its haft was black wood, its broadhead humming with defiled solar enchantments. He snatched it up. The spear felt unnervingly light, but its tip was wickedly sharp.
He gripped it, then looked at Vytas, who was still vomiting dark fire across the chasm. There was only one way to close the gap, one way to pierce the screen and force the AI into an engagement lock. He had to take the damage. He had to *force* the opening.
Ziven took a deep breath, fixing his target on Vytas’s chest. He knew what he had to do. He squared his shoulders, raised the spear, and prepared to run himself through to exploit an invulnerability frame. He only needed to survive the friendly-fire tick long enough to smash the vial down the boss’s gullet. He aimed the spear directly at his own gut and began his charge.
