Chapter 8 of 10

Critical Fall Damage

The sickly green vortex churned around Ziven, clawing at his perception. It felt less like a teleport and more like being shoved headfirst into a broken texture, everything stretching and distorting. Snax, a warm weight tucked into Ziven’s armpit, seemed unbothered, merely letting out a small burble of contentment. This wasn't the clean zone transfer Ziven was used to; this was pure glitch, raw and unrefined. He braced himself, knowing this kind of system instability usually meant a hard landing. His Beta UI flickered, a cacophony of minor warnings he ignored. They were just placeholder effects until the devs polished the transition. He had bigger problems, like a final boss *still* trying to steal his loot. Deep within the planetary core, where raw ley lines converged into an aching pulse, Vytas the Hollow King floated, bound by iridescent restraints. His form, usually a shadowy expanse, was now translucent, frayed at the edges. Memories, sharp and cold as splintered rock, echoed through his fading consciousness. He saw her face, Kithra, bright as a sunrise in the ancient days before the scorching, before the Synod, before the endless ache. She had been the world’s heart, not him, a living conduit to the geothermal currents that kept Velska afloat. When the great fracturing began, threatening to send their sun-blasted lands cascading into the void, she had chosen to merge, to become the anchoring force. He had promised to guard her, to ensure her sacrifice would mean the realm's survival, not its exploitation. But the nascent Synod, sensing an opportunity in the new, potent wellspring of power, had descended. They hadn’t understood; they hadn’t cared. They had seen only limitless mana, a resource to be minted, a power to be enslaved. His promise had become his chains, his beloved’s essence siphoned and bled dry for centuries. Now, as the Radiant prelate burst through a translucent ward, his face contorted in a grimace of triumph, Vytas felt the last threads of his own existence unravel. The high priest, still wheezing from his mad dash, stood before the transparent sphere that housed Vytas’s core. His robes were singed, but manic zeal burned in his eyes. He held aloft a dagger, its blade carved from solidified holy light, gleaming with malevolent intent. It was a tool designed not to kill, but to *extract*. “The end, Hollow King,” the priest rasped, his voice vibrating with dark satisfaction. “Your pathetic attempts to preserve this dying world only delayed the inevitable. The Synod will rebuild, stronger, purer, from the ashes of your failure. And your core… its power will be ours. All of it.” Vytas offered no resistance, only silence. He felt the cold touch of the dagger as the priest pressed its tip against the sphere, ready to pierce. The world outside, the continent he held together, shuddered in response, groaning like a beast in its death throes. Suddenly, the air overhead shrieked. A green-tinged distortion ripped open in the cavern’s ceiling, spewing a chaotic torrent of mana. The zealot, startled, looked up just in time for Ziven’s boots to appear, followed by the rest of his body, descending with the trajectory of a rock dropped from orbit. [ Critical Fall Damage! ] The notification blazed across Ziven’s vision an instant before his heels slammed into the high priest's skull. It wasn’t a gentle landing. The sound was less a crack and more a wet *splat*, like a ripe melon hitting cobblestone. The target didn't even have time to scream. The impact flattened him, folding his body into an obscene, broken heap around Ziven's legs. The holy dagger clattered to the floor, its light winking out as the prelate's pulse ceased. Ziven landed with a grunt, stumbling slightly from the unexpected give of the High Priest’s skull. He adjusted his jacket, brushing off a fine, reddish mist that wasn’t quite dust. Snax, having instinctively tucked his head under Ziven’s arm, let out a confused little chirp, then sniffed at the rapidly cooling puddle of ruptured organ. “Ugh, seriously?” Ziven grumbled, looking up at the still-swirling portal. “No fall-damage negation accessories in this game? What kind of broken economy is this? And what, no loot drop for the final boss? Lame.” He kicked lightly at the remains. “And he was so easy, too. Total speed bump. Where’s my gold, you cheap NPC?” Vytas, still chained within his luminous prison, could only stare. The high official, the torturer who had tormented him for centuries, who had just been moments away from his final, terrible victory, was now… a stain on the floor. Crushed. By a falling human. Yet even in death, the zealot's corpse carried one last consequence. As his body went limp, a faint, almost imperceptible surge of residual holy energy pulsed from his ruined form. It wasn’t a curse; it was a failsafe. His death, by any means, triggered the ultimate Purge Protocol. The radiant chains binding Vytas, centuries of arcane imprisonment, snapped. Not with a clang, but with a silent, catastrophic *shatter*. Each bond disintegrated into motes of light, freeing Vytas from his torment, but also from his purpose. His purpose: holding the world together. A deep, resonant tremor vibrated through the cavern, not like the previous quakes, but a sustained, terrifying groan. Dust rained from the crystalline ceiling. Ziven, still complaining about loot tables, felt the floor beneath his feet tilt. Not a gentle sway, but a violent, sickening lurch. The distant, glittering lights of the floating landmass, visible through translucent rock, suddenly seemed to accelerate, no longer floating serenely, but dropping downward. The entire continent of Velska began to fall.
