Chapter 27: The Mirror's Malice

2.1k words

Cold wind whipped across the barren, flat wasteland, carrying the sharp scent of ozone and ancient frost. Beneath Onyx's leather boots, the surface of the lake stretched out like a vast sheet of polished obsidian. Every step he took echoed in the silence, a hollow sound that seemed to travel forever into the twilight. Beside him, Xime walked with a slight limp, his chest rising and falling in shallow, exhausted gasps. Even in this dim, perpetual twilight, Xime’s golden hair seemed to catch whatever faint light remained in the sky, though his usual radiant glow had dimmed to a flickering ember. Onyx kept his hand close to his belt, his fingers brushing the cold steel of his twin daggers. "We need to keep moving," Onyx muttered, his voice barely louder than a whisper, yet carrying a sharp edge of urgency. He didn't look at Xime, but his eyes constantly scanned the perimeter, searching for any sign of the corruptive rot. Trusting someone had never been his strong suit, but out here, in the freezing middle of nowhere, they were bound together by necessity and something far more dangerous. They had been walking for hours, the sky above stuck in a sickening, bruised purple hue. This was the heart of the Twilight Void's domain, a place where time felt stagnant and the cold ate at your very soul. Onyx could feel his dark magic sluggishly pulsing in his veins, protesting the unnatural chill. Beside him, Xime was suffering even more, the sun-wielder's heat slowly being leeched away by the environment. "I can... I can keep going," Xime murmured, though his shivering body betrayed him. He reached out, his fingers brushing against Onyx's arm, seeking even a shred of warmth. Touching him sent a sharp jolt of electricity straight to Onyx's core, a dangerous ignition of their synchronized magic. Onyx pulled away slightly, his jaw clenching as he fought the urge to pull Xime closer. Vulnerability was a luxury he couldn't afford. He had learned that lesson the hard way during the Great Eclipse, when the people he trusted most had left him to die in the dark. Since then, he had built walls so high and thick that no one could climb them. Yet, this golden-haired idiot was somehow slipping through the cracks. Without warning, a low, rumbling vibration shook the ice beneath them. Onyx froze, his muscles locking as he dropped into a low, defensive stance. Beside him, Xime gasped, his hand flying to his chest as if he had suddenly been stabbed. Cracks began to spiderweb across the black ice, glowing with a pale, sickly blue light. From the center of the cracks, the surface didn't break; instead, it rippled like liquid glass. Slowly, a figure began to rise from the depths, coalescing from the frozen water and dark magic. Onyx drew his daggers in a single, fluid motion, the dark metal whispering a promise of death. He expected a beast, a dragon, or some twisted manifestation of the Twilight Void. What emerged made his breath catch in his throat, freezing the air in his lungs. Standing before them was Xime. Not the real Xime, who was currently trembling beside Onyx, but a perfect, crystalline mirror image. This copy had the same sharp jawline, the same broad shoulders, and the same golden hair, though it was frosted over with a layer of glittering ice. Only the eyes were different. Instead of the warm, amber fire that Onyx had come to secretly crave, these eyes were flat, hollow, and filled with a mocking coldness. Cruel smiles curved the clone's lips, an expression that looked entirely unnatural on Xime’s face. "Look at what the shadow has dragged in," the clone sneered, its voice a perfect, chilling replica of Xime's rich baritone. It raised a hand, and a jagged sword of solid ice materialized in its palm, humming with dark, corruptive magic. "A broken assassin and his little spark, freezing to death in the dark." Onyx didn't waste time on words. Pushing off his back foot, he launched himself forward, a streak of lethal shadow. He closed the distance in a heartbeat, his right dagger slicing through the air in a deadly arc aimed at the clone's neck. With surprising speed, the clone raised its ice sword, parrying the blow with a sharp clatter of metal against ice. Onyx spun, using the momentum to drive his left dagger deep into the clone's side. Blade sank into the frozen flesh, shearing off a chunk of dark, icy matter. Sharp, agonizing screams pierced the quiet air. Onyx recoiled, his eyes darting back to where the real Xime stood. Xime was on his knees, clutching his side where blood was rapidly pooling through his fingers, staining his shirt a bright, horrific crimson. "Xime!" Onyx cried out, his heart hammering violently against his ribs. He looked back at the clone, whose side was already sealing over with fresh, glittering ice. Clone laughed, a sound like grinding glaciers. "Did you think it would be that easy, Onyx?" the clone mocked, taking a slow, deliberate step forward. "We are linked, he and I. Every cut you give to me, you carve into his flesh." To prove its point, the clone lightly dragged its own fingernail across its forearm. Clean, shallow slices appeared on the real Xime's forearm, blood welling up instantly. Xime let out a choked groan, his head hanging low as he struggled to breathe. "Don't... don't stop, Onyx," Xime managed to gasp, his voice trembling with pain. "You have to destroy it." Anger, hot and volatile, surged through Onyx's veins, warred against the sudden, paralyzing fear gripping his chest. He had spent his whole life avoiding vulnerability, believing that letting anyone close would only lead to pain and betrayal. Now, the universe was forcing him to physically butcher the only person he had ever dared to care about just to survive. "You're a coward," Onyx spat, his voice dropping to a dangerous, quiet growl as he circled the clone. "Face me like a real opponent." Clone only laughed louder, the sound echoing mockingly across the frozen lake. "I am your opponent, shadow," the clone said, lunging forward with sudden, terrifying speed. Ice sword swung in a brutal downward arc, aiming to split Onyx in two. Onyx leaped backward, the tip of the blade barely missing his chest, cutting a thin line through his leather vest. Instantly, Onyx counterattacked, his instincts taking over. He swept his leg low, catching the clone's ankle and sending it crashing to the ice. Before the clone could rise, Onyx brought his dagger down, pinning its shoulder to the frozen ground. Another scream of pure agony tore from the real Xime's throat. Xime collapsed entirely onto the ice, his body shaking violently as a fresh wound opened on his shoulder. "Onyx... please," Xime gasped, his amber eyes clouded with pain and exhaustion. Onyx froze, his dagger still embedded in the clone's shoulder. Seeing Xime like this, bleeding and broken because of his own actions, shattered something deep inside Onyx's chest. Clone grinned up at him, entirely unbothered by the dagger pinning it down. "Dependency has made you weak, Onyx," the clone whispered, its dead-blue eyes gleaming with triumph. "You used to be the fearsome shadow assassin. Nobody could touch you. Nobody could hurt you." It raised its free hand, wrapping its icy fingers around Onyx's wrist, squeezing until the bones groaned. "But then you let him in," the clone continued, its voice dripping with venomous glee. "You let this radiant, useless light make you soft. You crave his touch. You need his warmth. And now, it will be your undoing." With a powerful heave, the clone threw Onyx off, sending him sliding across the slick ice. Onyx pushed himself up, his breath coming in ragged gasps. He looked at his daggers, then at Xime, who was barely conscious, his blood staining the black ice. Clone stood up, pulling the dagger from its shoulder and tossing it aside. The wound healed instantly. If Onyx kept fighting, he would kill Xime. Realization was a cold dread that settled deep in his gut. Every instinct he possessed screamed at him to fight, to tear down the threat with raw, unbridled force. Shadow magic had always been his shield, his weapon, his only true companion in a hostile world. Giving up his weapons felt like slicing his own throat, a terrifying surrender to the void. Xime watched him with wide, frantic eyes, his pale chest heaving as he fought the corruptive poison. He could feel the exact moment Onyx’s resolve shifted, their synchronized magic thrumming with a sudden, quiet peace. It was a golden warmth that defied the freezing dark of the lake. Vulnerability was his greatest fear. Trusting someone else, letting his guard down, had always felt like handing over a weapon to his enemy. But looking at Xime, Onyx knew there was no other choice. He had to trust that their magic, that their bond, was stronger than this cruel illusion. --- Slowly, Onyx stood up straight. He looked down at his remaining dagger, his fingers tightening around the hilt one last time. Then, with a deliberate motion, he opened his hand. Weapon clattered against the ice, sliding away into the darkness. He did the same with his other throwing knives, stripping himself of every weapon he carried. He stood completely defenseless in the middle of the frozen lake. "What are you doing?" the clone demanded, its icy brow furrowing in genuine confusion. "Have you finally accepted your death?" It raised its massive ice sword, the blade gleaming with a wicked, blue light. "I won't fight you," Onyx said, his voice remarkably calm, devoid of the anger that usually fueled him. He stepped forward, leaving his weapons behind, walking directly toward the sharp point of the blade. "And I won't hurt him." "Onyx, no!" Xime screamed, his voice cracking with desperation as he tried to drag himself forward. "Get away from it! Please!" Onyx didn't look back. He kept his eyes locked on the clone, on the face that looked so much like the man he loved. "You think this is strength?" the clone hissed, its expression twisting into a mask of pure fury. "This is pathetic surrender. You are nothing but a coward!" With a wild, desperate roar, the clone lunged, driving the icy sword straight toward Onyx's chest. Onyx didn't dodge. He didn't raise his hands to block the strike. He stood his ground, a shadow refusing to flee the coming storm. Frozen blade pierced his shoulder, tearing through leather, skin, and muscle. An explosion of agonizing, freezing pain ripped through Onyx's entire body, threatening to drop him to his knees. He gasped, his teeth clenching so hard he thought they might shatter, but he refused to cry out. He stared directly into the clone's dead-blue eyes, a cold smile touching his own lips. "You lose," Onyx whispered. Clone's eyes widened in sudden, stark terror as it realized what had happened. Instead of real Xime feeling the blow, the real Xime gasped as a wave of sudden warmth washed over him. Icy sword embedded in Onyx's shoulder began to glow, not with the cold blue of the void, but with a blinding, molten light. Cracks of pure heat spiderwebbed across the clone's frozen arms. Before the clone could even scream, its entire body shattered. Cloud of harmless, glittering snow exploded outward, swirling in the wind before settling softly onto the lake. Onyx fell to his knees, his hand instantly flying to his wounded shoulder. Xime scrambled forward, his own injuries completely gone, his face pale with panic. "Onyx! Onyx, gods, please tell me you're okay," Xime cried, his warm hands grabbing Onyx's face, forcing him to look up. But Onyx couldn't speak, his eyes wide as he stared down at his chest. Liquid fire was pouring from the wound in his shoulder, soaking his dark clothes. It wasn't red blood, and it wasn't the dark, shadowy essence of his magic. Boiling gold, bright and blindingly hot, was spilling from his veins, dripping onto the dark ice beneath him. With a violent, deafening hiss, the frozen lake began to melt where the gold touched it. Steam rose in thick clouds as the molten gold carved deep, glowing rivers into the ancient ice, spreading rapidly outward. As the clone's sword pierces Onyx, the clone shatters into harmless snow, but Onyx's wound bleeds real, boiling gold that melts the frozen lake.
