Chapter 28 of 31
The Golden Bleed
1.3k words
Pain exploded through Onyx’s left shoulder, white-hot and blinding.
Frost clung to his eyelashes, but his chest burned as if he had swallowed molten glass.
Golden fluid bubbled up around the translucent blade still buried deep in his flesh, sizzling against the ancient ice.
Screaming was a luxury his tight throat couldn't afford.
He choked, his fingers clawing at the slick surface of the frozen lake.
Cold seeped from the weapon, attempting to freeze his blood before it could flow.
Beneath him, the thick floor of the frozen lake groaned.
A deep, resonant sound vibrated through his bones, like a sleeping beast waking from a centuries-long slumber.
Gold met ice, and the reaction was instantaneous.
Hissing steam erupted from the point of contact, spitting white vapor into the freezing air.
It wasn't normal blood.
It was the core of his magic, mixed with the strange essence that had kept him alive, now boiling at a temperature that defied nature.
"Onyx!"
Xime’s voice sounded miles away, muffled by the roaring rush of heat building beneath the floor.
Heavy boots scrambled over the slick surface, rushing toward him.
Xime looked terrified, his golden hair wild, his hands shaking as he reached out.
Cracks spiderwebbed out from Onyx's body, glowing with a fierce, subterranean light.
Boiling pressure built beneath the ice sheet, begging for an escape.
Sudden, violent fractures tore across the frozen cavern floor with the sound of snapping wood.
Heat surged upward, a violent blast of ancient, trapped warmth that shattered the remaining ice.
Water rushed over Onyx’s boots, warm and dark, as the thermal vent fully opened beneath them.
Steam billowed in thick, heavy sheets, instantly turning the sub-zero tomb into a sweltering greenhouse.
Condensation coated the rock walls, running down in thick rivulets.
Onyx felt the world spinning, the steam filling his lungs with damp, heavy heat.
Choking on the sudden humidity, Onyx gripped the damp stone that now exposed itself beneath the melting ice.
He could feel his strength draining, his vision tunneling into a narrow, dark circle.
"Don't move," Xime gasped, dropping to his knees beside him.
Sweat beaded on Xime's pale forehead, his chest heaving under his singed tunic.
Golden light flickered weakly at Xime's fingertips, fighting against the lingering darkness of the cavern.
"You absolute idiot," Xime whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of anger and raw terror.
"Had to... test the theory," Onyx muttered, his teeth clenching as a fresh wave of agony sliced through his upper body.
Dark spots danced in his vision, threatening to drag him into unconsciousness.
"Hold still," Xime commanded, reaching for the hilt of the ice-sword.
Cold blue light emanated from the weapon, contrasting sharply with the hot steam rising around them.
Xime's fingers closed around the frozen hilt, his knuckles turning white.
"This is going to hurt," Xime warned, his amber eyes locking onto Onyx's dark gaze.
"Just do it," Onyx growled, bracing his good arm against the wet stone.
Muscles bunched in Xime's shoulders as he pulled.
Screams tore from Onyx's throat, raw and primal, echoing off the cavern walls.
Blood spattered across Xime's face, warm and gold, glowing faintly in the dim light.
With a wet, sickening slide, the blade came free.
Memories threatened to pull him under.
Images of the Great Eclipse flashed through his fading consciousness.
He remembered the cold, indifferent faces of his former allies as they left him behind to freeze.
Now, he was helpless again, completely at the mercy of his greatest rival.
Every instinct screamed at him to fight, to push Xime away, to call upon his shadows and protect himself.
But looking up into Xime's panic-stricken face, the shadows refused to rise.
Pressing his palm directly over the gaping wound, Xime closed his eyes.
"Stay with me," Xime pleaded, his voice cracking.
Searing light flared from Xime's hand, sinking directly into Onyx's torn flesh.
Light poured into the torn skin, sizzling and crackling like raw electricity.
Onyx's back arched off the ground.
His fingernails dug deep into the wet stone, scraping until they bled.
He wanted to scream, but the air had left his lungs, leaving only a dry, rattling gasp.
Xime held him down, throwing his entire weight over Onyx's chest to keep him still.
Waves of golden fire surged through his veins, meeting his own dark, boiling blood.
Slowly, the excruciating heat subsided into a dull, throbbing ache.
---
Silence fell over the cavern, broken only by their ragged breathing.
Onyx collapsed back onto the damp stone, his chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow breaths.
Beside him, Xime slumped forward, exhausted, his forehead resting against Onyx's uninjured shoulder.
Warmth radiated between them, a physical connection that felt entirely different from the cold hostility of their past.
"You could have died," Xime whispered against his skin.
"So could you," Onyx replied, his voice barely a rasp.
He reached up with his good hand, his fingers tangling in Xime's damp hair.
He looked up at the dripping ceiling of the cavern, feeling a strange, unfamiliar sensation wash over him.
Peace, quiet and profound, settled in his chest.
Refusing to strike the clone—refusing to harm even the likeness of the man beside him—had been the correct choice.
It had saved them both.
For someone who had built a life on walls and weaponized shadows, surrendering had felt like death.
Yet, here they were, breathing, alive, and bound by a heat that neither of them could deny.
Xime shifted, lifting his head to look down at Onyx.
Golden-brown eyes searched his face, looking for any trace of the old, bitter rival.
"Why did you do it?" Xime asked softly.
"Because I couldn't bear to see you bleed," Onyx confessed, the truth slipping out before his defenses could stop it.
He didn't care about his pride anymore.
Xime's breath hitched, his fingers tightening on Onyx's collar.
"We're supposed to be enemies," Xime murmured, though there was no heat in his words.
"Exactly," Onyx agreed, leaning up just enough to press his forehead against Xime's.
Dark magic flared weakly at the edges of Onyx’s vision, but it no longer felt hostile toward Xime’s light.
Instead, the two elements twined together in the warm air, a quiet understanding passing between them.
"If we survive this, Onyx..." Xime started, but didn't finish the thought.
"We will," Onyx promised, closing his eyes to savor the warmth of Xime's breath.
He pulled Xime closer, ignoring the ache in his shoulder as their bodies pressed together on the wet stone.
Around them, the dense mist began to shift, stirred by a gentle draft from the newly opened vent.
Condensation dripped from the ceiling, tapping rhythmically on the stone.
Slowly, the thick white clouds began to disperse, parted by the rising heat.
Onyx forced his eyes open, his gaze drawn to the far wall where the ice had completely melted away.
A massive structure began to take shape through the remaining haze.
Rising steam slowly clears to reveal an ancient temple door carved from a single, giant white-and-black pearl.
