Chapter 26: A Breath of Warm Ashes
1.8k words
Frost bit into Onyx's cheeks like tiny glass needles. Beneath them, the lake was a solid, black mirror, trapping the horrors of the deep under yards of thick, unnatural ice. Memories of his childhood abandonment still clawed at his chest, a phantom ache that refused to fade after the giant eye's psychic assault.
"Xime," Onyx gasped, his breath blooming into a cloud of white crystals that immediately fell to the ground. Silence stretched across the desolate, frozen expanse. Beside him, the vibrant sun wielder looked like an ice sculpture left out to crack. Xime's hair, once a blinding gold that rivaled the noon sky, had faded to a dull, ash grey.
Trembling fingers reached out, Onyx's black-clad hand hovering over Xime's pale cheek. Touch was always a battle between them, a volatile combustion of opposite elements. Now, there was no fire. Only the terrifying stillness of a dying star remained.
"Wake up," Onyx growled, the raw edge in his voice surprising even himself. "Do not do this. You don't get to save me and then die. We are not even."
Cold air rushed into Onyx's lungs, freezing him from the inside out. Temperature levels were dropping fast, plunging toward an absolute zero that would stop their blood in its tracks. He had to do something, or the twilight void would claim them both before the sun could ever rise again.
Laying Xime flat on the black ice, Onyx tore at his own buckles. His heavy, enchanted leather coat—his armor, his shield against the world—was ripped off and cast aside. For years, that leather had been his second skin, a barrier keeping everyone from seeing the damaged boy underneath. Throwing it away felt like tearing off his own flesh.
Next went his dark tunic, the fabric clinging to his skin before the freezing wind turned it stiff. He didn't hesitate, even as the sub-zero air hit his bare chest with the force of a physical blow.
Bare skin met the biting, sub-zero wind. Onyx flinched, his muscles seizing as the cold scraped against his flesh. He ignored the screaming of his nerves, refusing to let the agony slow him down. His hands shook violently as he grabbed Xime by the shoulders.
Pulling Xime's freezing body against his own chest, Onyx wrapped his arms around him. He dragged the heavy leather coat over both of them, sealing them in a makeshift cocoon of body heat. He needed to be closer, to offer every single watt of warmth his stubborn body could muster.
Contact was a shock to his system. Xime felt like a corpse pulled from an arctic grave. His skin was so cold it burned, sending a violent shudder straight through Onyx's spine. It was a visceral, agonizing contrast of flesh against flesh.
"Dammit, Xime," Onyx whispered into the grey strands of Xime's hair. "Focus on my heat. Take it. I have enough to share. Just don't leave me."
Shadow magic surged beneath Onyx's skin, trying to rise to defend them. He commanded the darkness to form a dome over them, hoping to block the freezing wind that threatened to turn their blood to slush.
Darkness responded, weaving a tight, pitch-black sphere around their huddling bodies. Yet, shadows held no heat. They only offered a shield of cold silence, trapping them in the dark together.
"You have to fight," Onyx muttered, his teeth chattering so hard his jaw ached. "You are the sun, remember? You are the bright, annoying light that irritates my eyes. You cannot burn out here."
Ice-cold air scraped against his bare shoulders, but Onyx focused entirely on the freezing boy in his arms. Xime's skin felt like marble, unyielding and frozen. Panic, hot and terrifying, flared in Onyx's chest.
Fierce panic was a feeling he had buried deep after the Great Eclipse, after the people he trusted had turned their backs on him. He had sworn never to depend on another soul, never to let anyone close enough to hurt him. Yet here he was, begging.
"Please," Onyx whispered, his forehead resting against Xime's icy temple. "I can't do this alone. I can't navigate this rot without your annoying, blinding light."
No response came from the boy in his arms. Xime's eyelashes were frosted white, cast in a permanent squint of agony.
"Listen to me," Onyx demanded, his voice cracking, shedding the cold armor he had worn for years. "I am terrified. Do you hear me? I am terrified of a world without you."
Saying the words aloud felt like ripping out his own heart. It was a confession of absolute defeat. He had let someone in. He had allowed this golden, infuriating boy to become his anchor.
"If you die, there is nothing left for me," Onyx whispered, his chest heaving against Xime's still form. "I will let the twilight consume everything. I swear it. Live, Xime. Live."
"You promised we would make it through," Onyx continued, his voice dropping to a desperate whisper. "You promised you would show me the sun again. Don't you dare break that promise."
Slowly, the desperate plea seemed to penetrate the dark fog surrounding Xime's consciousness.
A tiny, almost imperceptible twitch stirred against Onyx's collarbone.
Xime's head moved slowly, dragging his cheek across Onyx's bare shoulder. His breathing was a shallow, rattling gasp, but he was listening.
"Onyx..." Xime's voice was a thread, barely audible over the whistling wind outside their dark dome.
"I'm here," Onyx said, tightening his grip, pressing his chest harder against Xime's. "I've got you. Just hold on."
Slowly, Xime tilted his chin up. His lips, pale and cracked from the frost, brushed against the hollow of Onyx's neck.
Touch ignited a faint, desperate spark. It was like striking a match in a damp cave, a tiny flicker of heat that threatened to die at any moment.
It wasn't the roaring furnace of Xime's usual magic, but a fragile, embers-only heat. The kiss was weak, desperate, pressing directly over Onyx's pulsing artery. It was an act of raw survival, a physical anchor holding them both to the mortal realm.
Instantly, a wave of liquid gold seemed to flow from the contact point. It seeped into Onyx's veins, fighting off the encroaching frost that had been threatening to stop his heart. The sensation was intense, a painful, beautiful rush of heat that made Onyx's vision blur.
Onyx gasped, his head falling back as the contrast of freezing air and sudden, internal heat overwhelmed him. He clung to Xime, his fingers digging into the fabric of Xime's torn shirt.
"More," Onyx groaned, his lips brushing Xime's ear. "Keep breathing, Xime. Live."
They stayed locked together on the black ice, two opposing forces keeping each other alive through sheer, stubborn will. The boundaries between shadow and light blurred under the heavy coat.
Time lost all meaning. Under the heavy leather coat, the small pocket of air warmed, fueled by the desperate rhythm of their racing hearts.
Gradually, the grey in Xime's hair seemed to hold steady, not deepening any further. His breathing became deeper, more regular, the gold in his veins starting to flow again.
"You're a fool," Xime whispered against Onyx's neck, his voice slightly stronger now.
"And you're a pain in my ass," Onyx replied, though he didn't loosen his grip. He kissed the crown of Xime's head, breathing in the scent of ozone and burnt sugar.
"You admitted it," Xime murmured, a faint, teasing tug at the corner of his lips. "You're terrified of losing me."
"Shut up," Onyx growled, though there was no venom in it. "I only said it so you wouldn't die and leave me to carry you back."
"Liar."
"Your skin," Xime murmured, his fingers weakly tracing the line of Onyx's collarbone.
"It's freezing," Onyx countered, his chest vibrating with a low chuckle. "But you... you're warming up."
Indeed, the golden magic was beginning to circulate again. It wasn't the bright, blinding light of day, but a soft, golden glow that painted their skin in the dark sanctuary of their dome.
Onyx looked down at Xime's face. Even with grey hair and bruised, tired eyes, Xime was breathtaking. The contrast of the dark shadows around them and the soft gold radiating from Xime's skin made him look ethereal.
Desire, raw and undeniable, flared in Onyx's chest. It was a physical ache that rivaled the cold. He leaned down, pressing his forehead against Xime's.
"Don't do that again," Onyx whispered. "Don't ever sacrifice yourself for me."
"I had to," Xime said softly, his eyes opening slightly, revealing the molten gold beneath his lashes. "I couldn't watch you drown in your own mind."
"I would have survived," Onyx lied.
"You wouldn't have," Xime said, his hand finding Onyx's cheek, his touch warmer now. "And I couldn't live in a world without you either."
A thick, sweet silence hung in the air between them, heavy with unspoken truths.
Onyx felt his chest tighten. For a man who had built his entire life on isolation and distrust, this level of vulnerability was terrifying. Yet, looking at Xime, he realized the walls he had built were already gone.
Pressing his lips to Xime's temple, Onyx inhaled the scent of him. They were trapped in the middle of a frozen, deadly lake, surrounded by an ancient, corruptive force, but in this small dome of shadows, they were safe.
"We need to move soon," Onyx said, though he didn't make any move to let go.
"Just a minute more," Xime pleaded, burying his face in Onyx's shoulder. "Let me just... feel you."
Onyx held him tighter. The heat of their bodies was a small, fragile rebellion against the absolute zero of the twilight void.
A deep, resonant vibration shook the ice beneath them.
Onyx stiffened, his shadow-sensing abilities instantly flaring to life. The black mirror of the frozen lake hummed with a dark, corruptive frequency.
"Something is coming," Onyx whispered, his hand reaching for his blade on his discarded belt.
Cracks, thin and glowing with a sickly violet light, began to spiderweb across the ice right beneath where they lay.
Pushing Xime behind him, Onyx grabbed his leather coat and threw it over Xime's shoulders. He stood up, bare-chested in the freezing wind, his blade drawn and his shadows swirling around his arms.
Water bubbled up through the fractures in the ice, freezing instantly into jagged shards.
A figure began to rise from the dark water beneath.
Onyx's breath caught in his throat as the shape solidified, stepping out of the freezing depths.
A shadow-copy of Xime, wearing a crown of ice, rises from the frozen lake, wielding a replica of Xime's sun-gold sword.
