Chapter 26: The Void-Gorgon's Grip
1.3k words
Cold needles pricked Apollo’s veins, freezing the dark, pulsing heat of his vampiric blood.
Breathing became a chore as the air turned heavy, tasting of ozone and dead ash.
Before him, the Void-Gorgon hovered, an unnatural distortion of reality that twisted the light around its obsidian, multi-jointed limbs.
Its central eye glowed with an absolute, light-devouring vacuum, pulsing with a low, rhythmic hum that vibrated through the stone floor.
"Hold your ground!" Lyra’s voice cracked, her hand gripping his shoulder to steady herself.
Sweat beaded on her forehead, her usually bright golden aura flickering like a dying lightbulb before snuffing out completely.
Every instinct in Apollo’s body screamed at him to fight, to summon the volatile gold lightning that usually answered his call.
He clenched his fists, trying to spark the familiar, crackling heat.
Nothing came.
Only a pathetic, static pop hissed from his knuckles before dissolving into the gray mist.
Panic, cold and sharp, clawed at his chest.
His fangs, which usually elongated at the scent of blood, receded into his gums, leaving his mouth dry and tasting of copper.
"Is this your savior?" Commander Xylos scoffed, his voice echoing through the ruined archways of the Olympian Sanctuary.
Standing atop a pile of rubble, the Celestial commander looked down with utter disdain.
His silver armor gleamed, untouched by the dust of the collapsing temple.
Behind him, a dozen heavily armed Celestial soldiers marched forward, their energy rifles humming with oppressive power.
"Get up, Apollo," Lyra whispered, her teeth gritted as she tried to raise her bow.
Strings of light formed on her weapon, only to snap and vanish under the heavy pull of the Void-Gorgon’s field.
She stumbled, her knees buckling under the artificial gravity radiating from the beast.
Apollo reached out to catch her, but his own legs felt like lead.
---
Deep inside his mind, the silence was deafening.
Usually, his inner beast roared, a feral predator ready to tear through any obstacle.
Now, that beast was silent, curled in a dark corner of his soul, shivering under the weight of the nullification.
Without his powers, he was just a boy from the slums of Animarium.
Just an orphan.
Memories he had spent years burying bubbled to the surface, unbidden and cruel.
He saw the burning streets of his childhood, the rain-slicked alleyways where he had huddled for warmth.
He heard the screams of the kids who had shared his cold, cardboard beds, dragged away by the Empire's recruiters while he hid in the shadows, too weak to do anything but watch.
"No," he muttered, shaking his head to clear the vision.
"Not again."
"You are nothing without your stolen spark," Xylos sneered, stepping down from the rubble.
Each of the commander's heavy boots made a dull thud that vibrated through Apollo’s skull.
"A parasite pretending to be a god."
With a lazy wave of his hand, Xylos signaled his men.
"Bring them to me."
Two soldiers lunged forward, their shock-batons crackling with artificial energy that seemed immune to the nullification field.
Apollo forced his heavy limbs to move, throwing himself in front of Lyra.
He swung a desperate, wild punch at the first soldier.
His fist struck the heavy plastoid chest plate, sending a jarring vibration straight up his arm.
Bones popped in his wrist.
He gasped, stumbling back as the soldier didn't even flinch.
---
Pain flared, hot and sharp, but there was no rapid healing to dull the ache.
No dark energy surged to knit his bruised knuckles back together.
He was entirely human, fragile and breakable.
A heavy gauntlet backhanded him across the face.
Apollo spun through the air, crashing hard against the stone floor, his vision swimming with black spots.
"Apollo!" Lyra cried out.
A soldier grabbed her by her hair, jerking her head back as she struggled.
She kicked and bit, but without her divine energy, she was easily overpowered.
They pinned her to the dusty ground, a boot pressing firmly into the small of her back.
Seeing her pinned made something snap inside Apollo, but the anger had nowhere to go.
A heavy sense of doom crushed his chest, a suffocating weight of pure, unadulterated inadequacy.
He was failing them.
He was failing Lyra, failing the refugees, failing himself.
Every promise he had made to become stronger, to never let anyone get left behind again, shattered on the cold temple floor.
"Let her go," Apollo croaked, pushing his palms against the dirt to lift himself.
His muscles shook violently, refusing to cooperate.
"Look at you," Xylos said, walking over to stand directly above him.
Slowly, the commander placed the heel of his boot on Apollo’s wounded hand, slowly grinding it into the gravel.
Apollo screamed, a raw, guttural sound of agony that echoed off the crumbling walls.
Xylos spat on the floor. "A blood-drinking stray playing at divinity."
---
Dust swirled around them, kicked up by the heavy thrusters of hovering Celestial landing craft.
More soldiers poured into the sanctuary, rounding up the remaining Olympian loyalists.
Elderly men and women, children with faint traces of divine blood, all were shoved into energy cages.
Their cries filled the air, a chaotic chorus of terror that Apollo could do nothing to stop.
He watched a young girl lose her grip on her mother's hand, dragged away by a faceless enforcer.
Helplessness washed over him in waves.
Crushing realization hit him that no matter how hard he fought, the universe would always find a way to strip him bare and leave him bleeding in the dirt.
"Why?" Apollo whispered, his forehead resting against the cold stone.
"Why am I so weak?"
"Because you rely on gifts that do not belong to you," Xylos answered, leaning down slightly.
Cold and devoid of empathy, the commander's eyes locked onto him.
"Your bloodline is a curse, Apollo James. And today, it ends."
He raised his heavy sidearm, aiming the barrel directly at Apollo’s temple.
A low hum vibrated through the metal as it charged a lethal plasma bolt.
Suddenly, a loud explosion rocked the eastern wing of the sanctuary.
Plaster and stone rained down, creating a thick screen of dust.
Xylos cursed, stepping back and shielding his eyes.
"Report!" he barked into his communicator.
Through the haze, a small group of Olympian rebels launched a desperate counter-attack.
They didn't use magic; they used old-fashioned kinetic rifles and improvised explosives.
It was a suicide run, a frantic attempt to buy their people time.
"Kill them all," Xylos ordered calmly, turning his back on Apollo to direct his troops.
---
Taking advantage of the distraction, Lyra managed to twist beneath her captor’s boot.
She drove her elbow upward, striking the soldier in the unarmored joint of his knee.
He grunted, his grip loosening just enough for her to break free.
She scrambled over the dusty floor, grabbing Apollo by the collar of his jacket.
"We have to move," she panted, her face streaked with dirt and blood.
Apollo could barely find the strength to nod.
He dragged his useless body along with her, his boots scraping against the stone.
They slid behind a fallen pillar just as a barrage of plasma fire chewed through the spot where they had been lying.
Scorching heat from the passing bolts singed the back of Apollo’s neck.
Every breath felt like inhaling liquid fire.
"My powers... they aren't coming back," Apollo muttered, his voice trembling.
He stared at his hands, which were shaking uncontrollably.
"I can't feel the lightning. I can't feel the blood."
"Focus on me," Lyra demanded, grabbing his face with both hands.
Her green eyes were wide with panic, but there was a fierce determination in them.
"We don't need magic to survive. We've survived worse."
But they hadn't.
Not like this.
Not against an empire that had brought a god-killing beast to their doorstep.
Looking past her shoulder, Apollo saw the Void-Gorgon rise higher into the air.
Its nullifying field expanded further, a translucent dome of absolute silence that swallowed all energy in its path.
Faint rebel gunfire quickly died out as their high-tech weapons short-circuited under the pressure.
Despair settled deep into Apollo’s bones.
He was supposed to be the heir to a legacy.
Destiny had marked him to stand against the darkness.
Instead, he was pinned behind a rock, bleeding, useless, and terrified.
Screams of the captured loyalists grew louder, echoing in his ears like a mocking laughter.
---
One of the rebel fighters, a young man no older than twenty, was thrown through the air, crashing near their hiding spot.
His armor was scorched, his face covered in soot.
He looked up, his eyes locking onto Apollo.
For a brief second, a spark of hope flickered in the young man's eyes.
He recognized the legendary demigod, the one who was supposed to save them.
Horror replaced the young loyalist’s expression when he saw Apollo’s hollow, broken state.
"You... you're powerless," the boy whispered, coughing up dark blood.
Apollo couldn't look him in the eye.
He turned his head away, the shame burning hotter than any plasma burn.
Heavy footsteps approached their position as Celestial scouts moved in.
Desperately, the young rebel tried to crawl away, but a robotic drone hovered over him, its red targeting laser locking onto his chest.
Two Celestial soldiers grabbed him by the arms, dragging him backward.
He thrashed, his boots kicking up clouds of white dust.
Knowing he was doomed, the young rebel turned his head back toward Apollo, his face contorted in a mix of terror and desperate urgency.
A young, frantic Olympian loyalist, trapped by Celestial forces, screams a desperate warning: 'They're activating the… the 'Chronos Key'!' – before being silenced, leaving Apollo to wonder about this ominous new term.
