Chapter 25: Sanctuary Under Siege

1.3k words

Cold wind whipped through the jagged mountain pass, carrying the scent of ozone and burning fuel. Lyra pulled her heavy cloak tighter around her shoulders, her fingers trembling as she checked her noisy datapad. "We are close," she whispered, her breath forming white plumes in the freezing, thin air. "According to the encrypted map, the entrance to the Olympian Sanctuary lies just beyond this ridge." Apollo didn't answer, his eyes scanning the rocky peaks for any sign of Imperial scouting drones. Crimson veins pulsed faintly beneath his pale skin, a constant reminder of the volatile power sleeping in his blood. Ever since discovering his vampiric curse was actually a primordial blood-sigil, he felt a strange, heavy weight in his chest. It wasn't just a hunger anymore; it was a weapon waiting to be aimed, a dark legacy he didn't ask for. "Remember what the decrypted data shard revealed," Lyra warned, stepping carefully over a patch of slick ice. "This sanctuary isn't just a safe haven for the survivors." "It sits directly above a highly volatile containment zone, holding something ancient and incredibly dangerous." "I know," Apollo muttered, his voice flat and cold as the surrounding stone. "If the Celestials break through, they won't just kill the survivors—they'll unleash a force that could tear this entire planet apart." Walking in silence, they reached the crest of the ridge, and the world below them opened up. Below them, a massive hidden valley was revealed, carved directly into the heart of the mountain range. Ancient marble columns rose alongside improvised metal shelters, blending old-world architecture with modern survival technology. But there was no peace in this sanctuary. --- Fire consumed the beautiful white stone courtyards. High-pitched screams bounced off the canyon walls, mingled with the harsh, mechanical chatter of plasma rifles. Celestial shocktroopers, clad in heavy chrome-and-black armor, poured into the valley like a wave of metal insects. They fired indiscriminately, turning homes to ash and hunting down anyone who ran. Descendants of the minor demigods fought back with desperate, hopeless fury. Some threw bursts of crackling blue electricity from their fingertips, while others swung heavy iron weapons with superhuman strength. Faint, glowing marks flickered on their skin—bronze laurels, silver bows, golden tridents—marking their diluted divine heritage. Yet, their powers were weak, worn thin by generations of hiding and survival in this hostile galaxy. Against the highly trained, heavily armored Celestial forces, they stood no real chance. Apollo felt his chest tighten as he watched a young girl try to shield her fallen brother. Her wrist glowed with a faint silver crescent, but her small shield of hard-light shattered under a barrage of plasma fire. Something deep inside Apollo broke at the sight. Years of running, of pushing people away to protect himself from abandonment, suddenly felt like a coward's lie. These people were strangers, but they carried the same blood, the same curse of being hunted for who they were. "We can't just watch," he growled, his hands curling into tight fists until his knuckles turned white. Lyra looked at him, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and determination. "I'll cover you from the ridge," she said, unslinging her high-caliber energy rifle and dropping to one knee. "Go get them, Apollo." --- Sliding down the steep gravel slope, Apollo let the crimson energy take over his senses. Dark red mist began to boil off his skin, his eyes shifting from their normal hue to a predatory, glowing scarlet. His fangs elongated slightly, a low hum of power vibrating through his bones. A Celestial trooper raised his rifle to execute the young girl and her brother. Moving faster than human eyes could track, Apollo slammed into the trooper like a runaway freight train. The heavy armor crumpled under his impact, sending the soldier flying into a stone pillar. Spinning around, Apollo intercepted another trooper, grabbing his rifle barrel and twisting it into a useless spiral of metal. He threw a heavy left hook, his fist reinforced by his crimson blood-sigil. Shockwaves from the punch shattered the soldier's visor, knocking him cold instantly. "Get behind me!" Apollo yelled to the two children, his voice echoing with an unnatural, double-toned resonance. They didn't hesitate, scrambling behind his legs as he stood as a shield against the incoming squad. Three troopers advanced, their weapons humming as they charged up heavy plasma bolts. Blue light flared from the ridge above, punching a hole through the lead trooper's chest piece. Lyra's rifle spoke again, dropping the second soldier with a perfect headshot. Taking advantage of the distraction, Apollo lunged at the third, ripping the weapon from his hands and throwing him across the plaza. Breathing heavily, he turned to check on the children. Looking up at him, the young girl stared with wide, awe-filled eyes as she noticed his glowing red eyes and the dark sigils swirling on his arms. "Are you... one of the lords?" she whispered, her voice trembling. "No," Apollo said, his tone softening just a fraction. "Just someone who's tired of seeing monsters win." Helping them up, he pointed toward a deep cave opening near the back of the temple. "Run inside. Keep your heads down and don't come out until it's quiet." They ran, their small footsteps echoing against the stone. Watching them go, Apollo felt a strange warmth bloom in his chest, fighting back the cold hunger of his vampiric nature. For the first time in his life, he wasn't running away. He was fighting for someone else. Turning back to the battlefield, he let out a fierce roar, his crimson energy flaring outward in a shockwave of raw power. More shocktroopers turned their attention toward him, realizing a major threat had entered the fray. "Focus fire on the anomaly!" a squad leader barked through his helmet communicator. Plasma bolts rained down on Apollo's position, scorch marks tearing up the ancient stone tiles. Dodging and weaving, he utilized his enhanced reflexes to stay ahead of the deadly light. He swept the legs of an approaching soldier, using the fallen body as a shield against a volley of laser fire. Blood dropped from a shallow graze on his cheek, but the pain only fueled his focus. Swirling red energy pulsed from his veins, drawing on the ambient energy of the battlefield, turning his pain into raw physical power. Another trooper fell to his brutal strikes, his armor shattered. Lyra continued her deadly rhythm from above, her shots keeping the snipers on the higher ledges suppressed. Together, they were turning the tide of the local skirmish, giving the surviving demigods room to regroup. Faint cheers rose from the defenders as they saw the Celestial advance falter. But the victory was short-lived. --- High above the valley floor, a heavy mechanical laughter cut through the sounds of war. Commander Xylos floated downward on a sleek, anti-gravity platform, flanked by four elite bodyguards. His cybernetic eye whirred and clicked, projecting a red scanning beam over Apollo's body. "Well, well," Xylos mocked, his voice amplified by heavy-duty shoulder speakers. "You runaway orphan, you have finally decided to show your face." "And you brought your little blood-trick with you." Apollo spat a mouthful of dark blood onto the stone, his eyes locked onto the commander. "Your fight is with me, Xylos," Apollo shouted, his voice ringing across the ruined plaza. "Leave these people out of it." Xylos threw back his head and laughed, a grating, metallic sound. "These people? They are nothing but scrap, remnants of a dead era." "You, however... you are the prize." Gesturing to the massive dropship hovering above, Xylos tapped a command on his wrist gauntlet. "I knew you would come here, Apollo." "So, I brought a special toy just for you." Heavy mechanical clanks echoed from the sky as the dropship's massive underbelly opened. A colossal, rectangular steel vault descended, suspended by glowing energy tethers. It slammed into the center of the courtyard with a deafening crash, shattering ancient statues and sending a cloud of stone dust into the air. Steam hissed violently from the vault's seams as the heavy metal plates began to unlock. Slowly, the reinforced walls folded outward, revealing the terrifying construct inside. Xylos, observing Apollo's arrival, unleashes a new, terrifying weapon: a 'Void-Gorgon' – a colossal, multi-limbed construct that emits a nullifying field, freezing all Olympian powers in its vicinity.
