Chapter 27: Echoes of Chronos
675 words
Pain screamed through Apollo's limbs. His muscles burned, each step an agony. The Void-Gorgon’s nullifying field sucked the very life force from him, leaving him hollow, a mere mortal shell. Every spark of lightning, every surge of vampiric power, was gone. Nothing remained but the raw, unyielding will to move.
His breath hitched, a ragged gasp in the thick, oppressive air. Metal groaned underfoot. Commander Xylos’s forces swarmed the sanctuary, their heavy boots echoing doom. Lyra. He needed to reach Lyra.
Saw her then, a desperate, defiant silhouette. She crouched by a control console, fingers flying across a Celestial interface. Sparks showered as she bypassed security, her small frame a fragile point of resistance against the Empire's might. Her mission: sabotage the Void-Gorgon.
He pushed forward, fueled by a frantic terror. His legs trembled. Sweat stung his eyes. The ambient energy drain felt like a physical weight pressing him into the ground. Each meter was a battle, a victory of pure, stubborn defiance.
Dust devils swirled around his feet, kicked up by the distant, crushing weight of Celestial patrols. Explosions rocked the cavern, debris raining down. Lyra looked up, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and fierce determination. She saw him, a flicker of hope in her gaze.
Hope he barely deserved. He was useless, crippled. A demigod stripped bare. But Lyra still fought. He had to reach her. He had to protect her.
His hand clutched the obsidian artifact, still nestled in his pouch. The smooth, cold stone felt inert, a mere trinket. It offered no comfort, no power. Only a constant, inexplicable weight.
Suddenly, a searing heat erupted from his palm. The obsidian pulsed, a violent crimson glow bursting from its surface. It pulsed, a heartbeat of raw, uncontained energy. The nullifying field around him flickered, wavered, then distorted.
Pain intensified, but it was different. Not the draining emptiness, but a blinding, overwhelming surge. Visions slammed into his mind, a rapid-fire sequence of images too vast, too ancient to comprehend. They burned behind his eyes, a phantom reality overriding his senses.
Giants clashed on a fractured battlefield, their forms colossal, wreathed in stellar dust. Light-clad figures, beings of pure energy, struck down titanic beasts that roared with voices that could unravel planets. Worlds shattered like glass. Stars imploded, their deaths forming new nebulae of cosmic dust and fear.
Then, a weapon. A colossal scythe, its blade curved like a crescent moon, its edge impossibly sharp. It cut through creation itself, cleaving dimensions, sundering time. Wielded by a being too immense to fully grasp, a shadow against the backdrop of a dying universe.
Saw a swirling vortex then, a maelstrom of temporal energy. It pulled, it tore, it rewound and accelerated the very fabric of existence. Time became a river, churning, flowing backwards and forwards, a terrifying, beautiful dance of causality.
His breath caught. The visions lasted only a heartbeat, but they seared themselves into his soul. Awe gripped him, a chilling reverence for power so absolute it defied understanding. Terror followed, cold and sharp, at the realization of what he was witnessing, what this artifact truly hinted at.
The crimson light receded, leaving him gasping, disoriented. The nullifying field reasserted its oppressive hold, but the echo of the visions lingered. The artifact was more than a key, more than a weapon. It was a window.
Stumbling forward, Apollo pushed past the last resistance. Lyra looked up, her face streaked with grime, her eyes wide. She pointed at the screen, her voice barely a whisper amidst the chaos.
“Got in! I bypassed the primary lock, but…” She trailed off, her fingers hovering over a line of encrypted text that suddenly decrypted itself. Her gaze widened, fixing on the glowing letters.
Her jaw dropped. Her hands flew to her mouth, stifling a cry. A shiver ran through her small frame, a tremor of pure dread. She turned to Apollo, her eyes reflecting a horrifying revelation.
“The Chronos Key isn’t a weapon… it’s a device to accelerate the awakening of the entities beneath Animarium!”
