Chapter 2: Unspoken Words

1.2k words

Warmth crept up Mina’s neck. His gaze had been too sharp, too direct. Eun Woohoo, the man who commanded attention without uttering a single word, had looked right at her. She pressed her lips together, her heart thumping an erratic rhythm against her ribs. This was unusual. Usually, she was invisible, a ghost in the bustling corridors of Kim Corp. Minutes later, the meeting room door clicked shut. The cold CEO was gone, swallowed by the frosted glass walls. Mina released a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. Her fingers, resting on her keyboard, felt suddenly clumsy. Returning her attention to the spreadsheet, the numbers blurred. Taehyung, her boss, her secret adoration, occupied her thoughts. He was charm and competence personified, moving through the office like a restless sunbeam. His laugh, deep and resonant, often drifted from his corner office, making a warmth spread through Mina’s chest. For three years, she had watched him. From her quiet cubicle, she knew his morning coffee order, the way he tapped his pen when deep in thought, the slight crinkle around his eyes when he genuinely smiled. It was a foolish, silent devotion, nurtured in the shadows. No words had ever passed between them beyond professional courtesies. "Good morning, Mina." "Please send that report, Mina." His voice was always kind, but detached. She craved more, yet her shyness locked the words in her throat. Office chatter swelled that afternoon. Whispers snaked through the cubicles, growing louder, more insistent. A new rumor. Not about the investor, Eun Woohoo, but about Taehyung himself. Mina tried to ignore it, burying her face in a stack of documents. Suddenly, Jina, from the next desk over, leaned in. "Did you hear?" Her eyes sparkled with gossip. "About Mr. Kim? He's getting married!" Ice flooded Mina’s veins. The papers in her hand trembled. "Married?" Her voice came out as a thin, reedy whisper, barely audible even to herself. "Yes! To some heiress from the Choi Group. They say it's an arranged marriage, but a huge deal for the company. An engagement party is being planned already!" Jina rambled, oblivious to the quiet devastation unfolding beside her. A sharp pain seized Mina’s chest, squeezing the air from her lungs. This couldn't be happening. Not him. Not now. Her world, built on silent hopes and stolen glances, began to crack. She nodded, unable to form a coherent reply. Her vision blurred, the brightly lit office spinning into a kaleidoscope of muted colors. Each word Jina spoke was a dagger, twisting deeper. The future she had secretly dreamt of, however impossible, shattered into a million sharp shards. Throughout the rest of the day, Mina moved like a robot. Her fingers typed, her eyes scanned, but her mind was a whirlwind of despair. She kept glancing at Taehyung's office, half-expecting him to emerge, to deny it, to somehow make the cruel rumor vanish. He remained inside, a formidable, unreachable figure. Later, walking home through the bustling city streets, the noise felt distant. The vibrant lights of Seoul seemed to mock her internal darkness. Tears pricked at her eyes, hot and insistent, but she blinked them back. Crying wouldn't change anything. It was a silent grief, for a love never spoken, never acknowledged. Days turned into a suffocating blur. The engagement news solidified, appearing in business journals and confirmed by official company memos. Taehyung was indeed marrying Choi Soomin, a woman Mina only knew from glossy magazine pages. Beautiful, accomplished, everything Mina was not. She saw Taehyung occasionally, his movements more brisk, a faint smile often gracing his lips. He looked happy. The sight twisted a fresh knot in Mina’s stomach. How could she begrudge him happiness? Yet, a selfish ache persisted. One afternoon, she found herself in the breakroom, pouring a cup of lukewarm coffee. Eun Woohoo stood by the window, his back to her, looking out at the city skyline. He was always so still, so composed. A stark contrast to Taehyung's vibrant energy. He turned, catching her eye. For a brief moment, his dark eyes held hers, a flicker of something unreadable passing between them. He offered a slight, almost imperceptible nod. Mina felt a peculiar jolt, a strange recognition. She quickly looked away, her cheeks heating. Cold. That was the word most people used to describe Eun Woohoo. But in that fleeting interaction, Mina sensed a depth, a quiet intensity beneath the surface. He was not a man easily dismissed, even if her heart remained tethered to another. Her nights became sleepless. She replayed every interaction, every shared glance that wasn’t, every imaginary conversation she’d ever held with Taehyung. The reality crushed her. He was moving on, building a life, and she was simply a statistic in his company, an employee he barely registered. She couldn't stay. The thought, once a fleeting whisper, solidified into a desperate resolve. Watching him marry another woman, knowing her feelings would remain forever locked away, was a torment she couldn't endure. She needed to disappear. The decision was terrifying, yet liberating. She would leave everything behind. Her job, her apartment, her silent, unrequited love. A new start, far away, where Taehyung's shadow wouldn't loom over her every moment. It was the only way to heal. Quietly, she began her preparations. She drafted a resignation letter, generic and formal, citing personal reasons. She researched cities, places where no one knew her, where she could become someone new. Her few belongings were sorted, packed into boxes, or given away. Each action was deliberate, a step towards severing the ties that bound her to this life, to this pain. Her apartment, once a sanctuary, now felt like a cage, filled with memories of distant longing. She couldn't breathe here anymore. One evening, after everyone had left the office, Mina slipped back in. She had forgotten a small box of personal items. The deserted office felt eerie, the hushed cubicles like tombs. Her footsteps echoed on the polished floor. She retrieved her box, a few photos, a small, worn notebook. As she turned to leave, her gaze fell upon Taehyung's office. The door was ajar, a sliver of light escaping from within. Curiosity, a dangerous, forbidden thing, pulled her forward. Peeking inside, she saw him. Taehyung sat at his desk, head in his hands, not working, but slumped, a picture of weary resignation. His usual radiant aura was gone, replaced by a brooding stillness. On his desk, an open folder. And beside it, a framed photograph of a striking woman, clearly his fiancée. His shoulders shook. Was he… crying? The perfect, untouchable Kim Taehyung? A gasp caught in Mina’s throat. This was not the happy groom. This was a man burdened, heartbroken even. What was happening? Her carefully constructed narrative of his joyful engagement crumbled. She froze, hidden by the doorframe, her heart hammering. He slowly lifted his head, his eyes red-rimmed, his face etched with a profound sorrow she had never imagined possible. His gaze, distant and heavy, swept across the room, and for a terrifying second, it seemed to land directly on her hiding spot. Mina instinctively pulled back, her breath hitched, fearing discovery, fearing understanding. This wasn't the happy ending she'd been told. This was something far more complicated, far more devastating, and it changed everything she thought she knew about him, about herself, about her decision to leave. A new weight pressed down on her, heavier than any unspoken love, as she realized this story was far from over.
