Chapter 1: A Silent Admiration
604 words
Cool morning air brushed Mina’s cheeks as she stepped out of the subway. Another day began, predictable in its rhythm, yet each one held a flicker of anticipation. Her steps were quiet, almost a whisper against the bustling city pavement, reflecting her presence in the world – seen, but rarely heard. She clutched the strap of her bag, a nervous habit.
Reaching the towering glass building, she paused. Kim Corp. The name glittered, etched in sleek silver. Her workplace. His domain.
Inside, the lobby hummed with activity. Employees darted past, coffee cups in hand, their voices a low murmur. Mina navigated the familiar path to her desk, a small island in the vast sea of cubicles on the marketing floor.
Minutes later, the elevator chimed on their floor. Her head snapped up, an involuntary reaction. A familiar figure emerged, drawing every eye, though he seemed oblivious.
Kim Taehyung. His dark suit fit him with tailored precision. His hair, a rich shade of brown, fell perfectly across his forehead. He carried himself with an effortless grace, a natural magnetism that pulled people into his orbit.
My heart pounded. It always did. A foolish, stubborn drum against her ribs. He laughed at something his assistant said, a deep, resonant sound that made a warmth spread through Mina’s chest.
He moved like a predator, sleek and powerful, yet his smile held a disarming kindness. That combination was her undoing. She watched him disappear into his private office, the heavy door closing with a soft click. Her breath hitched. A sigh escaped her, barely audible.
Turning back to her monitor, she forced herself to focus. Spreadsheets, reports, marketing campaigns. Her work was meticulous, precise. She found comfort in order, a stark contrast to the chaotic storm within her heart.
She was a ghost. She moved through the office silently, completing her tasks, always present, never truly noticed. It suited her. Her shyness was a shield, a wall built high around her emotions. She had never been good with words, especially not with the ones that mattered most.
Years had passed this way. Years of stolen glances, of listening to his voice from afar, of knowing his favorite coffee order without ever having served it to him. Each day, she came to work, not just for the paycheck, but for the chance to breathe the same air, to be in his vicinity.
Around midday, a new buzz swept through the office. A major investor, Eun Woohoo, was due for a meeting with Taehyung. Eun Woohoo. The name alone carried weight. He was the CEO of Stellar Holdings, a rival company known for its aggressive market strategies and its notoriously cold leader.
Soon, a sharp, almost icy presence entered their floor. Eun Woohoo. His dark eyes scanned the room briefly, a flicker of something unreadable in their depths. He was tall, formidable, dressed in a charcoal suit that seemed to absorb all light. His features were sharp, his jawline sculpted, giving him an air of severe authority.
His gaze swept over her cubicle for a fleeting moment. Mina felt a shiver, not of fear, but of an inexplicable awareness. It was different from the warmth Taehyung evoked. This was a cold, piercing recognition, like being seen by a hawk.
Woohoo walked past, his stride purposeful, disappearing into Taehyung's office. Mina exhaled slowly. The air felt lighter, yet a strange imprint of his presence lingered.
Lunch break arrived. Mina usually ate at her desk, avoiding the noisy cafeteria. Today, however, a nagging hunger pulled her towards the break room. As she walked, snippets of conversation drifted from the clustered desks.
