Chapter 2 of 2
Chapter 2: A Fluorescent Canopy of Silence
1.7k words
Cold metal bit into her shoulder blades, sending a sharp shiver straight up her spine.
Fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting a sickly, sterile glow over the narrow aisle of the Esselunga.
Leo loomed closer, his chest pressing against her white crop top until she could feel the rapid, heavy beat of his heart.
Every breath he took felt like a claim on her space, swallowing up the cool, air-conditioned draft of the supermarket.
Dust motes drifted through the pale, artificial light, dancing between rows of discount pasta and olive oil bottles.
Michy pressed her hands flat against a cold shelf behind her, her fingers brushing against cardboard boxes of penne.
Her knuckles turned white under the pressure.
Red hair, dyed a vibrant shade that felt too bold for the coward hiding beneath it, clung to her damp forehead.
Cold air from the dairy section drifted over, mixing with the suffocating warmth of Leo's body.
Every instinct in her body screamed at her to push him away, to use her hands and shove his solid chest.
Instead, her fingers remained curled into tight, helpless fists against her own thighs.
Conflict was a monster she could never bring herself to face.
Even when the monster was standing right in front of her, breathing down her neck, she chose to freeze.
Ever since childhood, she had been the one who smoothed things over.
Arguments made her stomach turn to ice, and the threat of someone being angry with her felt like a physical blow.
She would rather give up her space, her comfort, her own body, than endure the agonizing weight of someone's disappointment.
Leo knew this.
He had always known how to play her like an instrument, pushing just far enough to make her uncomfortable, but never so far that she could easily find the courage to scream.
Inside her pocket, a sudden vibration felt like an electric shock against her thigh.
Slipping her hand down, she felt a frantic pulse of her phone, a desperate rhythm breaking the heavy silence.
Screen illumination leaked through the thin, dark fabric of her black sweatpants, casting a faint blue glow between them.
"Don't," she whispered, her voice barely a thread, her hands trembling as she tried to pull back.
Leo didn't move an inch.
Instead, his grip on her hip tightened, his fingers digging into her soft flesh with a demanding intensity.
"Who is it?" he murmured, his breath smelling faintly of mint and stale coffee, warm against her cold cheek.
Looking down, she managed to wiggle its screen into view, her eyes straining behind her oversized glasses.
Marco's name flashed in bright, unforgiving letters across the glass, a digital lifeline that felt miles away.
"It's Marco," she whispered, hoping the name of their group leader would act as a shield to snap Leo back to reality.
Surely Leo would back off now.
Surely he wouldn't want to risk their entire social circle finding out about this private, tense encounter.
Memories of their shared past flashed behind her eyelids.
Leo had been there through her high school heartbreaks, always offering a shoulder to cry on, always playing the supportive friend.
But lately, his support had morphosed into something heavy, demanding, and dark.
He used his history with her like currency, trading favors for physical proximity, knowing she was too weak to ever demand her change back.
She felt like a bird caught in a net of her own making, too afraid of tearing the threads to ever try and fly away.
A slow, dangerous smile curved Leo’s lips, his eyes darkening with a sudden, predatory spark.
Rather than retreating, he seemed energized by the threat of being caught, a thrill-seeker playing with fire.
"Answer it," he commanded, his voice dropping to a rough, gravelly whisper that vibrated against her skin.
Trembling, her fingers hovered over a green button, her heart hammering like a trapped bird.
"Leo, please, we should just go back to the car," she pleaded, her voice cracking under the weight of her anxiety.
"I can't just... I can't talk to him like this."
"Answer it, Michy," he repeated, his tone leaving absolutely no room for negotiation or escape.
His hand slid from her hip to her lower back, warm and heavy through her cotton pants.
Warmth radiated through her clothes, making her shiver despite dry heat radiating from his skin.
"Answer him, or I’ll make sure he hears us anyway."
Panicking, she swiped the screen, a connection forming with a soft chime.
Before she could draw a breath to speak, Leo’s hand moved with terrifying, fluid speed.
His thick thumb pressed hard against her lips, sealing her mouth shut and cutting off her air.
Pressure crushed her lips against her teeth, tasting faintly of salt, sweat, and the rubbery grip of his hand.
Air became a luxury she couldn't afford.
She stared at his collarbone, focusing on a small mole just below his collar, trying to pretend she was anywhere else.
His thumb was heavy on her mouth, stretching her skin, forcing her to look at him.
His gaze was intense, burning with a dark triumph that made her feel incredibly small.
He knew he had won before the game had even started.
At the same time, his other hand drifted lower, seeking the waistband of her sweatpants.
Rough fingers hooked beneath its elastic, tugging this dark fabric down just enough to expose her lower back.
"Michy? You there?" Marco's voice crackled through her speaker, sounding impossibly distant yet terrifyingly close.
Gasps died in her throat as Leo's hand slipped beneath the cotton, sliding down a smooth curve of her hip.
Cold air rushed against her bare skin, followed instantly by the searing, invasive heat of his palm.
She wanted to scream.
She wanted to push him away, to slap his hands, to run out of the aisle and into a checkout lane.
But her muscles refused to cooperate, locked in a state of absolute, petrifying surrender.
Paralysis gripped her, a familiar, suffocating weight that always seemed to crush her whenever confrontation loomed.
If she screamed, everyone in the store would turn to look, exposing her shame to strangers.
Security would come, questions would be asked, and the police might even get involved.
Marco would find out, and their fragile peace would be shattered forever.
They would blame her.
They always blamed the girl who didn't say no, the one who let things get out of hand.
She could already hear the whispers, see the cold shoulders, feel the agonizing sting of being cast out.
Losing them was a fate far worse than enduring this silent, secret intrusion in a quiet corner of a supermarket.
Leo’s fingers crept lower, tracing her lace panties' edge with agonizing slowness.
His thumb remained firmly planted over her lips, damp with her shallow, frantic breaths.
"Michy?" Marco's voice sounded impatient now, a rustle of a windbreaker audible over the line. "Hey, are you guys still at the store? We're waiting at the car."
Leo leaned his forehead against hers, his eyes locked onto her dilated, terrified pupils.
Gently, he eased this pressure, just enough for her to speak, but kept his thumb hovering a millimeter from her lips.
His fingers gave a firm, teasing squeeze against her bare bottom, a silent warning of what would happen if she slipped up.
Moisture gathered in the corners of her eyes, blurring the harsh fluorescent lights above.
"Yeah," she choked out, forcing her voice to pitch upward, trying to sound breezy and untroubled.
"Yeah, Marco. We're... we're just grabbing the last few things."
"What's taking so long?" Marco grumbled, some keys jingling in the background. "It's just chips and soda. Hurry up, we want to get moving before heavy traffic hits."
Each word Marco spoke felt like a lifeline slipping through her fingers, leaving her stranded in darkness.
Below her waist, Leo's hand was moving, his fingers sliding deeper, exploring sensitive skin of her inner thigh.
Shivers racked her frame, a confusing mixture of raw terror and a sudden, traitorous spike of heat.
Forbidden friction sparked a warmth she hated herself for feeling, even as her mind screamed in silent protest.
How could her body react like this?
Shame, hot and thick, pooled in her stomach alongside the spark of heat his touch generated.
She hated the physical response, hated that her nerves could be ignited by someone who was actively violating her trust.
It made her feel complicit, as if her silence was indeed the invitation he claimed it to be.
Yet, the thought of stopping him, of declaring her boundaries aloud, felt like trying to lift a mountain with her bare hands.
"We had to... find a different aisle," she lied, her voice trembling slightly on a final word.
"These shelves were rearranged, and we got a bit lost."
Leo let out a chest-vibrating chuckle against her neck, his lips brushing sensitive skin just below her ear.
Hot and damp breath sent a final, devastating shiver down her spine.
"Is that so?" he whispered, his voice so quiet it didn't register on her phone, but it vibrated straight through her skull.
His hand pressed firmer, his fingers pushing past her thin underwear, finding her warmth.
Biting her lower lip to keep from crying out, she squeezed her eyes shut.
Tears slipped past her long lashes, wetting her cheeks and running down into her collarbone.
She felt dirty, exposed, yet completely unable to halt this momentum.
"Just... give us five minutes," she managed to say into her phone, her voice sounding tight, like a violin string stretched to its breaking point.
"Alright, five minutes," Marco said. "Don't make us come in there looking for you."
A sharp beep signaled the end of the call, leaving her in a vacuum of silence.
Silence fell over this aisle once more, heavy and suffocating.
Cold freezer units buzzed in the distance, a monotonous drone that felt like a funeral march.
Slowly, Leo withdrew his hand from her sweatpants, leaving a cold trail of air in its wake.
He pulled his thumb away from her lips, a smear of her saliva glistening on his skin.
Just as she whispered a final lie to Marco and hung up the phone, Leo leaned in close, his lips brushing against her earlobe.
"You know," he whispered, his voice dripping with dark amusement, "I know exactly why you didn't call for help—because you secretly wanted me to take control."
