Chapter 1: The Price of White Cotton

1.9k words

Freezing air drifted from the open dairy coolers, raising sharp goosebumps across Michy’s exposed midriff. She pulled her oversized black sweatpants slightly higher, trying to block out the chill, but the thin fabric of her white cotton crop top offered no protection. Overhead, the massive fluorescent tubes of the Esselunga supermarket hummed a low, monotonous tune. This bright white light bounced off the polished linoleum floor, highlighting every speck of dust and casting a clinical glare over the endless rows of colorful packaging. Condensation fogged the bottom edges of her oversized glasses, forcing her to push them up the bridge of her nose with a trembling finger. She hated how small she felt in this massive, sterile store, surrounded by normal people buying normal groceries. Red hair, freshly dyed and vibrant, fell over her shoulders in messy tangles, drawing the occasional glance from an elderly shopper pushing a cart nearby. She kept her head down, desperately wishing she could blend into the background. White cotton was a poor choice of clothing for an autumn evening, but she had rushed out of her apartment the moment Leo’s name flashed on her phone screen. He had told her they needed to grab snacks for the group's weekend cabin trip, and she hadn't even hesitated. Saying no had never been an option in her vocabulary, especially when it came to the tight-knit circle of friends she had fought so hard to keep. To Michy, a single refusal felt like a death sentence to her social life. Leo had always known how to exploit that weakness, using his effortless charm to pull her into his orbit whenever he wanted company. He was handsome, confident, and possessed a casual disregard for personal boundaries that both terrified and thrilled her. Disagreement was a luxury for people who didn't fear abandonment. For Michy, every boundary she tried to set felt like a physical threat, a guaranteed way to make her friends realize she was more trouble than she was worth. Conflict of any kind made her stomach churn with a sickening, hollow dread that she would do absolutely anything to avoid. She would rather swallow her own discomfort, her own safety, than watch someone's face turn cold with disappointment. Quietly stepping deeper into the cereal aisle, she tried to focus on the shelves of colorful boxes, hoping to distract her racing mind. The sweet, artificial scent of cardboard and sugar did nothing to calm the fluttering in her chest. Cardboard boxes of chocolate flakes and honey loops stacked high above her head, forming a narrow canyon of consumerism that felt increasingly claustrophobic. She clutched her phone tightly, waiting for Leo to reappear from the beverage section. Footsteps echoed from the end of the aisle, heavy and deliberate, instantly putting her on high alert. She didn't need to turn around to know who it was; she recognized the familiar, confident stride anywhere. Turning slowly, she found herself face-to-face with Leo, who was carrying several bags of potato chips and two boxes of sugary cereal under his arm. His dark eyes locked onto hers, a slow, predatory grin spreading across his lips. "Found the good stuff," he murmured, his voice dropping to a low pitch that seemed to reverberate in her chest. He didn't drop the items into the cart; instead, he tossed them onto a nearby shelf, clearing his hands. Stepping closer, he didn't stop when he reached the boundary of normal social distance. He kept moving forward until his chest was mere inches from her face, effectively trapping her. Cold metal from the shelving unit pressed hard against Michy's back as she instinctively tried to take a step backward. Her retreat was cut short, leaving her pinned between the steel racks and Leo's looming frame. He smiled down at her, his broad shoulders blocking out the rest of the aisle, creating a private, suffocating world just for the two of them. The scent of his expensive cologne mixed with the faint smell of tobacco, wrapping around her like a physical weight. "You look so small today, Michy," he whispered, his eyes dropping to the exposed skin of her waist. His gaze felt heavy, almost physical, tracing the contour of her ribs with a slow, deliberate intensity. Panic flared in her chest, a sharp, cold spike that made her breath hitch. Her mind screamed at her to push him away, to tell him he was too close, to walk back to the crowded main aisle where families were shopping. Instead of acting on those frantic thoughts, her body did what it always did when confronted with pressure. Her lips stretched into a tight, empty smile, a desperate mask of compliance meant to keep the peace. Making a scene would ruin everything. If she pushed him away, he would think she was being dramatic, or worse, he would get angry and tell the rest of the group. If Marco heard that she was causing trouble before the trip even started, she would be left behind. The thought of sitting alone in her apartment while they laughed and drank together was far more terrifying than whatever Leo was planning to do. Marco was the undisputed leader of their circle, the one whose approval she craved above all else. Leo knew this, and he used his closeness to Marco as a shield to get away with whatever he wanted. Smiling wider, she tried to keep her voice light and casual, hoping to defuse the growing tension. "We should probably get the rest of the things on the list, Leo. The others are waiting." "Thanks for worrying about them, but they can wait," Leo replied, his voice dripping with amusement. He didn't move an inch; instead, he leaned closer, his chest brushing against the front of her white crop top. Leo's hand rose slowly, his fingers brushing against the lower hem of her white cotton shirt. The touch was light, almost accidental, but it sent a violent jolt of electricity straight down her spine. Slowly, his fingers hooked under the soft fabric, lifting it just enough to expose the pale skin of her stomach to the chilly air. The contrast of his warm hand against her freezing skin made her shiver, her muscles tensing beneath his touch. His thumb began to trace slow, deliberate circles against her flesh, pushing her boundaries further than he ever had in public. He was testing her, waiting to see if she would finally find the courage to say no. She remained frozen, her back pressed hard against the metal shelf, her hands gripping the edges of her pockets so tightly her knuckles turned white. Her mind was a chaotic storm of dread and a sickening, twisted rush of validation. Years of feeling invisible, of believing she was only valuable when she was pleasing someone else, made this intense attention intoxicating. He wanted her, even if it was in a dirty, boundary-crossing way in the middle of a supermarket. Rough fingertips scraped against her sensitive skin, sending goosebumps spreading across her stomach. She closed her eyes for a brief second, trying to distance herself from the physical reality of what was happening. Heat bloomed in her cheeks, a flush of embarrassment and desire that she hated herself for feeling. She was yielding, letting him take whatever he wanted because the alternative was too terrifying to contemplate. Her shallow breathing made her chest rise and fall rapidly, bringing her body into repeated, intimate contact with his. Every time she inhaled, the soft cotton of her top rubbed against his chest, blurring the lines of consent even further. Every instinct told her that this was wrong, that a real friend wouldn't corner her like this, but her voice was locked behind a wall of paralyzing fear. She was a passenger in her own body, watching from afar as Leo took complete control. Yet, there was a part of her that craved this submission, the relief of not having to make a choice, of letting someone else decide what she was going to do. It was a dangerous, addictive feeling that she had been fighting for years. "You're so quiet, Michy," he whispered, his warm breath brushing against her ear, sending another shiver down her neck. "Do you like it when I touch you like this? You're not telling me to stop." Breathing became difficult as his face dipped lower, his lips hovering just above the sensitive skin of her neck. He was pushing her to the absolute limit, knowing she wouldn't break the unspoken rules of their dynamic. A shopper's cart squeaked in the next aisle, the sound incredibly loud in the tense silence of their corner. Michy's eyes flew open, her heart hammering against her ribs as she stared at the gap between the shelves, terrified someone would walk in. Someone seeing them would be the ultimate humiliation, a public exposure of her weakness and his predatory confidence. She wanted to shrink, to disappear into the cold metal shelves, but Leo's body kept her pinned in place. Validation warred with sheer panic as his touch grew firmer, his fingers sliding further under her shirt. He didn't care about the risk; in fact, the danger of being caught seemed to fuel his excitement. Behind her, a shelf of cereal boxes rattled slightly as she leaned her full weight against it, trying to create even a millimeter of distance. The yellow cardboard box of Choco Krave wobbled, nearly falling before Leo caught it with his free hand, laughing softly. Customers were just a few yards away, oblivious to the quiet drama unfolding in the cereal aisle. She could hear a mother quietening her child near the bakery, her voice a stark reminder of the normal world just out of reach. Still, she couldn't bring herself to call out, to make a noise that would bring salvation but also ruinous social consequences. Her silence was a contract, signed in the quiet hum of the fluorescent lights. "We really need to go," she tried again, her voice cracking slightly, betraying the intense panic she was trying so hard to hide. It was a weak, pathetic attempt at a boundary, and they both knew it. "Not yet, Michy," he murmured, his eyes glittering with dark satisfaction as he saw her resolve crumbling. "We're just getting started." Sweat broke out along her hairline, despite the cold draft still blowing from the dairy section. Her body was a battlefield of conflicting sensations, the chill of the store fighting the intense heat of his hand. Tension coiled tightly in her stomach as his hand crept lower, past the waistband of her black sweatpants. She squeezed her eyes shut, swallowing the sob that threatened to rise in her throat. Could she really let him do this here, in the middle of the Esselunga? The thought was insane, but her inability to say the word 'no' was a physical lock on her vocal cords. Would he stop if she started crying, or would that just make him feel more powerful? She didn't want to find out; she didn't want to see the disgust in his eyes if she showed how broken she truly was. Before she could make a decision, his fingers gripped her skin with a possessiveness that made her gasp. As Leo's hand slides firmly onto her bare hip under the bright supermarket fluorescent lights, a familiar ringtone blares from her pocket—it is Marco, the group's de facto leader, calling to ask if they are 'having fun yet'.
