Chapter 42: His Unyielding Shield

816 words

Searing pain exploded across Ares’s ribs. He staggered, a guttural grunt torn from his throat, but his arm remained a steel bar between Elara and the incoming assault. His body, a formidable wall, absorbed the impact intended for her. Elara’s breath hitched. Her heart seized, a cold dread washing over her as she saw the grimace on his face, the way his jaw clenched. He wasn't just grazed; that blow had landed hard. “Stay behind me,” Ares commanded, his voice tight with suppressed agony. He pushed her further back, his stance broadening, even as his movements gained a new, strained rigidity. Shifting her weight, Elara raised her wrist. A concentrated burst of sonic energy erupted from her gauntlet, sweeping across the immediate attackers, buying them a precious few seconds. More figures poured into the Nexus chamber, their movements swift, relentless. They were too many. Each one seemed to materialize from the shadows, their weapons glinting. Grinding his teeth, Ares parried a heavy-bladed attack, the clang echoing sharply. His left arm, the one that had taken the hit, moved with less fluid power, but his right was a blur of calculated strikes. Elara fired again, targeting their legs, disrupting their charge. She moved with him, a deadly dance of tech and martial prowess, their synergy almost instinctive despite their recent antagonism. He spun, deflecting a blow meant for her head, his movement a little slower than before. A grunt escaped him, but his eyes never left the attackers. Watching him, Elara felt a surge of something she couldn’t name—fear, certainly, but also a fierce protectiveness mirroring his own. He was injured because of her. Unleashing a volley of compressed air, she knocked back a trio of assailants. Her tech wasn't designed for sustained combat, but she pushed it, channeling every ounce of her ingenuity. “The perimeter defenses are failing!” Ares yelled, his voice strained. He kicked out, sending an enemy sprawling, then blocked a follow-up strike with a jarring impact that made him wince. Her gaze darted around the cavernous Nexus. Energy conduits sparked, emergency lights flickered, casting long, distorted shadows. They were being overwhelmed. Moving with surprising speed for his injury, Ares plunged into a cluster of enemies, his fists and feet precise instruments of pain. He cleared a small pocket, creating a momentary lull. Blood bloomed on his side, a dark stain spreading across his utility suit. He didn't acknowledge it, his focus absolute, his eyes burning with an unyielding intensity. “We can’t hold this point indefinitely,” Elara warned, her voice tight. She activated a localized EMP burst, disabling several drones that had entered the fray, their fall adding to the chaos. Spinning, Ares parried a spear thrust, snapping the weapon’s shaft. He then used the broken end to disarm another assailant with brutal efficiency. Desperation clawed at Elara. They were pushing them back, but for how long? The sheer volume of attackers was inexhaustible. He pushed her again, harder this time, towards a less-guarded section of the Nexus wall. “Move!” he growled, his voice raw. Elara didn’t hesitate. She dodged a swinging chain, her mind already racing, trying to anticipate his next move, to understand his desperate urgency. “There’s another way,” Ares said, fighting off two attackers simultaneously, his movements tight, controlled, despite the tremor in his arm. “A final line.” She saw it then. A faint outline on the polished chrome wall, almost invisible, masked by sophisticated optical camouflage. An access panel. Pulling her towards it, his grip surprisingly strong, he shielded her with his body from a flurry of incoming projectiles. A fresh wave of pain rippled through him, but he ignored it. “This is it, Elara,” he whispered, his breath hot against her ear, his eyes locked on hers, fierce and resolute. “My last gambit.” He shoved her fully against the panel, his back taking the brunt of a new attack, his shield unyielding. “You know its secrets, Elara. Activate my last gambit!”
