Chapter 41: Defending the Sanctuary
978 words
Screaming sirens tore through the air. Red emergency lights pulsed, casting long, distorted shadows across the sterile walls of the command center. Elara stared at the main monitor, the digital map of the sanctuary now riddled with flashing red markers. Invaders. Everywhere.
"They're here," Ares's voice rumbled beside her, devoid of his usual calm. His jaw was tight, eyes scanning the rapidly updating display.
Quickly, Elara tapped a sequence into the console. "Emergency lockdown initiated. All external blast doors are closing, but they've already breached Sector Gamma."
Heavy thuds echoed from somewhere above, then a sickening crunch. The entire structure vibrated. They were hitting the reinforced perimeter with serious force.
"Can you reroute power to any internal defenses?" Ares asked, already moving towards the armory console nearby.
"Limited options," Elara replied, fingers flying across the holographic keyboard. "Elias's system wipe affected most automated turrets. I can engage localized sonic deterrents in some corridors, maybe activate stun grids."
Gripping a sleek, black rifle from the wall mount, Ares checked its magazine. "It's better than nothing. Guide me, Elara. Where do we deploy?"
His gaze met hers, a fierce determination replacing the controlled anger from their earlier confrontation. This wasn't about their past now. This was survival.
"Main entrance is a lost cause," Elara confirmed, pointing at the map. "They're pushing through the service tunnels in Gamma. Our best bet is to hold the Nexus. It's the central hub, controls environmental systems, and has a direct line to the main power core."
"Then the Nexus it is." Ares spun, rifle held ready. "Stay close. Don't fall behind."
Running through the labyrinthine corridors, the metallic smell of ozone mingled with the acrid tang of burnt circuitry. Alarms blared, a relentless soundtrack to their frantic sprint. Elara gripped a small energy pistol she'd found in the armory, its weight unfamiliar in her hand.
Suddenly, a loud bang erupted from an intersection ahead. Figures in dark, tactical gear spilled into the corridor, weapons raised.
"Down!" Ares roared, pushing Elara to the floor.
He dropped to one knee, bringing the rifle to his shoulder. A rapid burst of fire ripped through the air, forcing the intruders to scatter for cover.
Elara scrambled, heart hammering against her ribs. She peered around Ares's solid frame. "Side corridor! They're flanking us!"
"Got it," Ares acknowledged, swiveling. His movements were fluid, precise, a deadly dance honed by years of training. He fired, hitting one assailant in the shoulder, sending them reeling.
Another attacker lunged, a wicked blade glinting. Ares met him with the rifle butt, a sharp crack echoing as the man crumpled.
"Through here!" Elara shouted, pointing to a rarely used service hatch. "It's a shortcut to the Nexus, and I can seal it behind us."
Ares didn't hesitate. He covered her as she fumbled with the manual release, sweat beading on her forehead. The clanging of boots grew louder behind them.
With a grunt, she pulled the lever. The heavy metal door groaned open. Ares shoved her through, then followed, turning to fire a final volley before the door slammed shut with a resounding clang.
Breathing heavily, they leaned against the cold metal. The air in the service tunnel was stale, thick with dust.
"Good call," Ares rasped, reloading his rifle with practiced ease. "They won't get through that without heavy explosives."
"They're probably already bringing those," Elara countered, her voice shaking slightly but her mind still sharp. "We need to set up defenses at the Nexus. I can access the local grid from there."
Reaching the Nexus was like entering a technological cathedral. Towering server racks lined the walls, their indicator lights blinking like constellations. A massive holographic display showed the sanctuary's energy flow, now dangerously fluctuating.
"Alright," Elara began, moving to the central console. "I'm bringing the stun grids online in the main access routes. And activating localized sonic emitters."
Ares took up a defensive position, rifle aimed at the main entrance. "Any blind spots I should know about?"
"Ventilation shafts above us," she warned, "and a maintenance crawl space to the east. I'm sealing those off digitally, but they're not blast-proof."
Suddenly, the overhead lights flickered. A deep rumble reverberated through the floor.
"They're here," Ares stated, his voice a low growl.
Explosions rocked the sanctuary, closer this time. A section of the main access corridor wall imploded inwards, showering the Nexus with debris. Dark figures rushed through the breach, their faces obscured by helmets.
"Stun grids active!" Elara yelled, hitting a final command.
A high-pitched whine filled the air. Several invaders stumbled, clutching their heads, dropping their weapons. Others, seemingly unaffected or better equipped, pressed forward.
Ares opened fire, precise and deadly. Each shot found its mark, dropping an enemy or forcing them back. Elara, emboldened by his stand, aimed her energy pistol. She fired, a weak blue beam striking a helmeted figure. It wasn't lethal, but it disoriented him long enough for Ares to deliver a swift, incapacitating blow.
Working in tandem, they were a surprisingly effective force. Elara became Ares's eyes and ears, pointing out targets, warning him of approaching threats from the multiple feeds she could access. Ares, in turn, was her shield, her unwavering protector, his movements a blur of controlled violence.
"Flank right!" Elara screamed, pointing. "Through the maintenance access, one heavily armed!"
Ares pivoted, firing a burst that shredded the flimsy grate of the maintenance shaft just as a figure emerged, carrying a compact launcher. The projectile fizzed harmlessly into the wall.
"Got him," Ares grunted.
More invaders poured in. Their numbers were overwhelming. Elara saw a group converging on Ares, their tactical movements coordinated. They were trying to pin him down, separate him from her.
"Ares, behind you! Three o'clock!"
He spun, taking down two with rapid shots. But the third, faster and more agile, lunged. Ares twisted, deflecting a blow from a shock baton, but he was momentarily off balance.
A glint of metal caught Elara's eye. Another assailant, emerging from a cloud of dust, aimed a projectile weapon at her. There wasn't time to warn Ares, who was already engaged.
Without thinking, Elara raised her energy pistol, a futile gesture against the incoming threat.
Ares saw it. His head snapped towards her, a primal roar tearing from his throat. He launched himself forward, a human shield.
The projectile, a sharp, metallic dart, struck him with a sickening thud. It wasn't a direct hit to his vitals, but a glancing blow against his side, just above his hip.
A choked grunt of pain escaped his lips. His body stiffened, a tremor running through him before he sagged slightly, eyes still locked on the attacker.
