Chapter 3: Gravity Defying Gel

1.2k words

Cold sweat raced down her spine, leaving a trail of goosebumps. Her fingers clawed at the hem of her oversized gray sweater. Ahead of her, Mr. Henderson’s thick, calloused fingers wrapped around the brass doorknob of her linen closet. Deep inside that dark, narrow space sat a five-foot-tall, neon-blue, sentient toothbrush. If her landlord opened that door, her life was over. She would be evicted. She would be kicked out of the dental hygiene program. She would end up living in her car, surrounded by ruined color-coded spreadsheets. "Wait!" she shrieked, the sound scraping her throat like sandpaper. Mr. Henderson paused. His bushy gray eyebrows knitted together as he glared over his shoulder. "What now, Miss Vance? I hear a jackhammer in there." "It's... it's a therapeutic percussion device!" she lied, her voice climbing to a frequency only dogs could hear. "For my... my chronic jaw tension. Dental school is incredibly stressful." To emphasize her point, she massaged her jaw with aggressive, jerky motions. Silence stretched between them. A muffled, rhythmic *thump-whir* vibrated through the wood of the closet door. Autumn's chest squeezed. She could already see the eviction notice. Her mind flashed to her childhood home, the screaming matches between her parents, the shattered plates, the unpredictability of a life without order. Suddenly, Mr. Henderson’s face softened. Rumbles of laughter started in his chest, rising up his thick throat. "A therapeutic percussion device?" he roared, slapping his thigh with a wet smack that echoed in the small hallway. He leaned against the doorframe, still chuckling, his large belly shaking under his flannel shirt. "Actually, I had a roommate back at tech school who was just like you. Kid named Miller. He used to arrange his textbooks by the thickness of the spine. If anyone touched his desk, he'd break out in hives. One day, we hid his slide rule. I thought the kid was going to have a stroke right there in the common room." Offering a tight, forced smile, she stood frozen. "Ah, keep your giant vibrator, kid," Mr. Henderson wheezed, wiping a tear of genuine amusement from his eye. He patted her shoulder with a heavy hand, nearly knocking her into the drywall. "Just don't let it shake the light fixtures loose in the apartment below. Mrs. Gable already thinks she’s experiencing localized earthquakes." With a final, hearty chuckle, he stepped out and clicked the door shut. Autumn collapsed against the wall, sliding down until her knees hit her chest. Her chest heaved as she drew in long, shaky breaths of the sterile, bleach-scented air of her apartment. Instantly, she felt a wave of relief. Never did she expect her strict landlord to turn into a comedy club audience of one. Slowly, she dragged herself back to her feet. Her gaze drifted back to the closet door. Vibrating had stopped. Absolute silence filled the apartment, thick and suspicious. Cautiously, she crept toward the door. Her fingers wrapped around the cold brass knob. She pulled. A soft creak echoed as the door swung open. Empty. Nothing but her perfectly stacked, lavender-scented towels remained. Lavender sheets sat in pristine, laser-aligned squares. Her backup dental floss dispensers, organized by flavor, were lined up like tiny plastic soldiers. Could it have been a hallucination? Maybe the sheer stress of the upcoming clinical exams had finally fractured her psyche. She let out a shaky, hysterical laugh, clutching her face with both hands. "I'm losing my mind," she whispered to the empty closet. *Splat.* A wet, heavy sound echoed from above. Slowly, with dread pooling in her stomach, she tilted her head upward. Hovering directly above her head, defying every known law of physics, was Jumbo. Five feet of bright blue plastic polymer made up his flexible body. Bright blue bristles twitched, sparkling with a mischievous, self-satisfied light. Lacking hands, he was somehow holding three tubes of her expensive whitening gel. Each tube cost her forty-five dollars. They were her prized possessions, imported specifically for her upcoming practical exams. Now, Jumbo was squeezing them with reckless abandon. He had already mapped out a giant, dripping smiley face across her pristine white ceiling. Two massive dollops of gel served as eyes. A thick, globby arc of sparkling blue-white paste formed a mocking grin. Jumbo’s bristles twitched, sparkling with a mischievous, self-satisfied light. He seemed to look down at her, radiating an aura of pure, unadulterated smugness. "Get down from there," Autumn hissed, her voice cracking. Jumbo didn't move. Instead, he squeezed a third tube, adding eyebrows to the smiley face. Thick, gelatinous stalactites of gel began to sag from the ceiling, hanging like frozen teardrops. Panic surged through her veins, hot and sharp. She looked around her living room, seeking some kind of weapon or a way to get him down. That was when she noticed the other changes. Usually a monument to sterile perfection, her apartment had been systematically sabotaged. Highlighters—previously arranged by wavelength of light—were scattered across her coffee table. They had been laid out to spell the word *RELAX* in bright, neon pink and yellow. On her desk, her anatomical dental model sat. Plastic jaw, usually clamped shut in a perfect Class I occlusion, was wide open. "He's a dental pirate," she whispered, her voice cracking. Even her bookshelf had been rearranged. Her textbooks on oral pathology and periodontology were upside down. "This isn't happening," Autumn muttered, grabbing her hair. Jumbo let out a soft, squeaky vibration that sounded suspiciously like a giggle. He wriggled his handle, shifting his weight on the ceiling. Another dollop of whitening gel fell, landing with a wet slap right onto her shoulder. Cold, sticky, and smelling violently of spearmint, the gel began to seep through her shirt. "Ow! Hot, hot, hot!" she gasped, remembering that clinical gel could cause mild chemical irritation. She frantically clawed at her shoulder, trying to scrape the gel off with her fingernails. But as she touched it, she realized something bizarre. When she pulled her hand away, her fingers were glowing with a faint, bioluminescent blue light. "That is it!" she yelled, pointing an angry finger at the ceiling. "You belong in a cup by the sink!" She grabbed a nearby broom, raising it like a spear. "Get. Down. Now." Jumbo merely wiggled his bristles in response. Shimmering light began to pulse from the giant smiley face on the ceiling. Autumn froze, her broom raised mid-strike. Laws of gravity seemed to warp around the ceiling. Dripping globs of gel didn't fall straight down anymore. They began to drift sideways, floating in the air like sticky, minty soap bubbles. One large glob floated past her ear, humming with a faint, static electricity. Autumn watched it, her eyes wide with horror. She looked over at her desk. Leather-bound, color-coded daily planner lay open. It was her life. Every hour of her day was scheduled in meticulous, micro-managed detail. From 6:00 AM meditation to 11:30 PM sleep hygiene prep. If a single drop of that chemical gel touched those pages, her entire life would be ruined. She scrambled toward the desk, her fingers outstretched to close the book. "No, no, no!" she screamed. High above her, Jumbo let out a vibrating hum. A heavy, mint-scented dollop of gel detaches from the ceiling and hovers in mid-air, defying gravity, before rocketing directly toward her open planner.
