Chapter 2: The Landlord's Heavy Shadow

1.6k words

Knock, knock, knock. Heavy, impatient blows rattled the thin wood of the apartment door. "Autumn!" bellowed a raspy, gravel-gargling voice from the hallway. "I know you're in there. I can smell the mint from here!" Panic, cold and sharp, spiked through her veins, freezing her in place on the bathroom floor tiles. Mr. Henderson, the most notoriously strict landlord in the tri-state area, was standing on her welcome mat. Looming behind her, Jumbo wobbled. Bright neon-blue bristles shimmered under the harsh fluorescent bulb of the bathroom. The five-foot-tall plastic monstrosity leaned against the shower curtain, its single massive cartoonish eye blinking in what looked suspiciously like mock innocence. "Into the closet," Autumn hissed, her voice a desperate, strangled whisper. "Now!" Jumbo did not move. Squeaky noises emitted from his base, sounding remarkably like a giggle. Desperation lent her strength. Memories of her childhood flooded her mind, a chaotic blur of mismatched socks and forgotten school lunches. Her parents’ divorce had been a masterclass in disorder, a messy, unpredictable storm that left Autumn clinging to calendars and planners like life rafts. She had spent the last ten years perfecting the art of control. Her socks were sorted by color. Her kitchen spices were alphabetized. Her dental tools were sterilized and aligned to the millimeter. And now, a giant, sentient toothbrush threatened to reduce her carefully constructed fortress of order to absolute rubble. Grabbing the giant blue stem of the toothbrush, she hauled him toward the hallway linen closet. Jumbo, however, was not cooperating. His massive, neon-blue body felt like a mix of heavy density rubber and slick, high-grade plastic. As she shoved, his giant white bristles scraped against her cheek, leaving a faint streak of mint-flavored gel. "Stop resisting!" she whimpered, planting her foot against the wall for leverage. Plastic and rubber seemed to grow heavier, dead-weighting himself like a stubborn toddler refusing to leave a toy store. His single massive googly eye rolled wildly, staring at her with a look that felt suspiciously like a challenge. "I will literally throw you in a recycling bin," she threatened under her breath. With a final, desperate heave, she rammed her shoulder against his midsection. He yielded with a soft, rubbery squeak, sliding into the dark depths of the closet. "Move, you oversized piece of dental plastic!" she grunted, her shoulder blades digging into the drywall. "Autumn!" Mr. Henderson called out again, his knuckles pounding a rhythmic threat against her door. "If I have to use my master key, that's a fifty-dollar convenience fee!" "Just a second!" she shrieked, shoving Jumbo's bulky blue head into the closet. Shelves groaned. Folded beige towels, precisely stacked by color and thread count, tumbled down like a soft avalanche. Squeezing her eyes shut in agony, she mourned the ruin of her perfect organization. "Get. In. There." She rammed her hip against Jumbo's thick plastic handle, forcing his lower half inside. Somehow, the giant toothbrush bent at an angle that defied the laws of rigid plastics. Curled among her spare bedsheets, his single giant eye peered out from between a fitted sheet and a stack of pillowcases. Slamming the wooden door shut, she clicked the latch into place. Breathing heavily, she smoothed down her rumpled pajama shirt, patted her wild hair, and ran toward the front door. "Mr. Henderson!" she gasped, throwing the door open and plastering on a bright, utterly manic smile. "What a wonderful... unexpected surprise!" Standing in the doorway was a man who resembled a bulldog squeezed into a faded plaid shirt. "You took your time," he grunted, stepping past her without an invitation. "The tenant downstairs is complaining about a drip. Said it's coming from your bathroom pipes." "My pipes?" Autumn's heart did a triple-flip. "Oh, I'm sure they're perfectly fine. I inspect them weekly with a flashlight." "I'll be the judge of that," Henderson rumbled. Sniffing the air, his nose wrinkled. "Why does it smell like a toothpaste factory exploded in here?" "I was just... practicing my hygiene routines," she lied quickly, gesturing toward her mouth. "You can never be too clean!" Henderson grunted, clearly unimpressed. Dusty prints from his heavy work boots marred her freshly vacuumed carpet as he trudged toward the small hallway leading to her bathroom. Autumn followed him, her palms slick with sweat. Every step closer to the linen closet felt like a march toward her execution. If Henderson found a giant, sentient toothbrush in her apartment, she wouldn't just be evicted; she’d be committed to a psychiatric ward. Suddenly, a deep, resonant hum vibrated through the floorboards. *Bzzzzzzzz.* Autumn’s jaw clamped shut. Mr. Henderson stopped mid-stride, his heavy boots freezing on the carpet. He tilted his head, his ears twitching. "Did you hear that?" "Hear what?" Autumn asked, her voice cracking. "I only hear the sweet sounds of a peaceful morning." *BZZZZZZZZZZZZ.* Violent vibrations intensified. Water in the toilet bowl rippled. Inside the closet, Jumbo had apparently decided to activate his electric setting. "Is there a generator in there?" Henderson asked, pointing his wrench toward the vibrating closet door. "No!" Autumn practically lunged, throwing her back against the closet door. "It's... it's my new massager! For my back!" Wooden door panels rattled violently against their frames. A framed picture of a tooth diagram on the opposite wall fell off its hook and shattered on the floor. "An electric massager?" Henderson walked closer, his eyes narrowing in suspicion. "What kind of massager shakes the drywall?" "My industrial-grade one!" Autumn yelled over the noise, her teeth literally chattering from the vibration shaking her spine. "It's... it's a chiropractic-approved, high-frequency, deep-tissue myofascial release device! For my extreme academic stress!" "Myofascial what?" "Stress!" she shrieked. "Dental school is a pressure cooker, Mr. Henderson! My shoulders are like granite! My therapist said if I don't use this high-vibration device, my neck might physically lock up forever!" Henderson stared at her. He looked at her vibrating body, then at the rattling closet door, then back at her chattering teeth. Slowly, a grim smile spread across his weathered face. "Stress, huh?" He let out a dry, wheezing laugh that sounded like a car failing to start. "Well, I'll be. You kids today. Can't handle a little homework without buying a machine that threatens the structural integrity of the building." "Yes, exactly!" Autumn forced a manic, trembling laugh. "We're very fragile!" "Back in my day, we just drank black coffee and got an ulcer," Henderson chuckled, shaking his head. "But hey, if it keeps you from suing me for a hostile living environment, go ahead and shake the building down. Just don't do it during quiet hours." "Absolutely! Only during approved, non-disruptive times!" Autumn promised, her back vibrating so hard she felt like her ribs were going to shake loose. "Alright, let me check those pipes," Henderson said, finally turning toward the bathroom. Kneeling awkwardly by the sink, he opened the cabinet doors and clinked his wrench against the metal. Metallic clicks echoed as the knobs rattled against her lower back. *Squeak. Squeak.* Rubber duck sounds seemed to escape the closet, high-pitched and mocking. "What was that?" Henderson called out from under the sink. "My joints!" Autumn yelled back. "They're popping from all the stress!" "You need to see a real doctor, kid," Henderson's muffled voice came from the cabinet. "Your joints sound like wet sneakers in a dryer." "I'll make an appointment!" Pressing her hands against the closet door, she tried to muffle the sound. Relief washed over her, but it was incredibly short-lived. As Henderson knelt in front of the bathroom sink, Autumn remained glued to the closet door. Inside, the vibration stopped. A terrifying silence fell over the hallway. Then, a soft, bubbly hiss echoed from behind the wood. *Squeeeeeeze.* "What's that?" Henderson asked, his voice muffled from inside the cabinet. "My... my digestion!" Autumn lied, squeezing her eyes shut. "I had a very spicy breakfast!" "You should see a doctor, Autumn. Seriously," Henderson's voice echoed back. "That sounded like a tire deflating." Behind Autumn, the closet door began to feel warm. A brilliant, neon-blue light began to seep through the cracks of the doorframe. Jumbo was utilizing his bizarre reality-warping abilities again. "Hey," Henderson said, his head emerging from the cabinet. He squinted at the glowing blue light illuminating the hallway carpet. "Is your massager on fire?" "No! It's LED therapy!" Autumn shouted, her voice rising to a frantic pitch. "Blue light therapy! It... it promotes cellular regeneration and kills surface bacteria! It's very popular in Scandinavia!" "Scandinavians are out of their minds," Henderson grunted, standing up and wiping his hands on a rag. "Well, your pipes are bone dry. No leaks here." "Oh, thank goodness!" Autumn gasped, stepping away from the door to guide him out. "Thank you so much, Mr. Henderson. I know you're busy, so I won't keep you—" "Hold on a second," Henderson said, his eyes locking onto the closet. That blue light, leaking from the bottom of the door, was now pulsing rapidly, casting eerie, electric shadows across the hallway. *Flash... flash... flash.* Suspicion clouded his features. "That doesn't look like any massager I've ever seen," Henderson said, his voice dropping its rare lightheartedness. His eyes narrowed to sharp slits. "And my lease strictly prohibits unauthorized heavy electrical equipment. If that thing blows a fuse, it could spark a fire. The wiring in this building is ancient." "It's perfectly safe, I swear!" Autumn cried, panic clawing at her throat. "I need to inspect it," Henderson declared, taking a heavy step toward the closet. "No, really, it's—" "Move aside, Autumn," Henderson commanded. She stood frozen for a fraction of a second before slowly sliding to the side, her mind racing for another lie, another excuse, anything to stop him from opening that door. Mr. Henderson narrows his eyes and reaches directly for the vibrating closet handle, his hand wrapping around the brass knob.
