Chapter 7 of 10

Fertilizer and Polka Dots

1.1k words

Grand Alchemist Vario, perched precariously on the prow of his shimmering crystal barge, surveyed Sullka’s farm with a look of theatrical disgust. His silken robes, embroidered with arcane sigils, billowed in the sky current. Below him, the assembled ranks of the multi-guild crusade – the Bloodfang, the Shadowspine, the Ironclad – shifted uneasily. They had expected an epic battleground, not a vibrant field of oversized legumes. “Behold, you fools!” Vario’s voice, amplified by a glowing orb clutched in his hand, boomed across the cloud-piercing heights. “This… *blight*… upon the Qullu is nothing more than a crude insult to true power! This ‘Demon Farmer’ thinks to usurp millennia of potion-crafting mastery with… *vegetables*?” He spat the word as if it were a noxious weed. Sullka, who had instinctively ducked behind an impossibly thick 'Sky-Gourd' cucumber, peeked out. “They’re not just vegetables, they’re genetically optimized produce, grown in perfectly balanced volcanic soil! There’s a difference!” he muttered, entirely too loud. Vario ignored him, his gaze sweeping over the vibrant rows of crops. “My entire supply chain, ruined! My healing tinctures, rendered obsolete by a rogue sprout! This agricultural abomination ends today! Behold the true might of the Alchemist Conglomerate!” He gestured grandly towards the monstrous beast at his side – a three-headed brute, its scales glinting like polished obsidian, its wings beating with the force of a gale. One head, that of a snarling lion, inhaled deeply, its chest expanding like a bellows. “Khurun, get ready with the compost spreader!” Sullka hissed, his face scrunched in a mix of panic and scientific curiosity. “I’ve always wanted to test the atmospheric nitrogen-fixation rates on… on a truly exotic pollutant!” The beast's lion head roared, a sound that vibrated through the very bedrock of the Qullu. A thick, emerald-green mist billowed from its maw, descending like a toxic cloud directly onto Sullka’s prize patch of 'Sun-Kissed' carrots. The air immediately turned acrid, stinging Sullka’s eyes. He braced for the sight of wilting foliage, the tragic end of his meticulously cultivated root vegetables. Instead, a faint shimmer rippled across the soil. The emerald mist, instead of clinging to the leaves, seemed to be sucked downwards, drawn by an invisible current into the rich, dark earth. The carrots, far from shriveling, seemed to swell, their orange hues deepening, their leafy tops unfurling with renewed vigor. A sweet, earthy scent, like rain on dry loam after a drought, now mingled with the lingering acridity. [POISON CONSUMED! BACTERIAL BIOMASS EXPLOSION! INITIATING ULTRA-RAPID NUTRIENT CONVERSION!] the System boomed, its voice laced with a confusion that Sullka rarely heard. [DEFOLIANT TO FERTILIZER! 1000% EFFICIENCY BOOST! NEW BIOLOGICAL THREAT DETECTED: ORGANICALLY ENHANCED ROOTS!] Vario's sneer faltered. He blinked, rubbing his eyes. “What… what sorcery is this? My Master-Grade Defoliant, the bane of all organic matter, merely… *nourishes* it?” He stared, aghast, as the dirt around the carrots began to glow with a faint, healthy green light. The soil, already robust, seemed to pulse with a manic energy, transforming the concentrated dragon-fog into the most potent fertilizer imaginable. **Jolt 1: Sudden reversal** The three-headed horror, sensing its efforts were futile, let out a frustrated growl. But the magical feedback loop had only just begun. The soil, overcharged with the sudden influx of ultra-concentrated nutrients, surged with an uncontrollable energy. A vibrant, almost violent, burst of growth erupted from the loam. Vines snaked upwards, leaves unfurled with snapping sounds, and even the air seemed to crackle with verdant power. This agricultural explosion, fueled by Vario's own toxic concoction, resonated with the magical sigils on his elaborate robes. The finely spun threads, woven with complex wards designed to amplify and protect, suddenly began to fray, then unravel. The connection between the hybrid monster's venom and Vario's garments created a disastrous short-circuit of raw, unrefined energy. “My robes!” Vario shrieked, clutching at the front of his garment as a seam burst open. “My ceremonial raiment! These cost a king’s ransom in purified mana crystals!” **Jolt 2: Public humiliation payoff** With a series of audible rips and a final, indignant puff of green smoke, the entire magnificent outfit—robes, capes, sashes, and even his pointed wizard hat—disintegrated into a cloud of sparkling dust. The dust drifted away, revealing Grand Alchemist Vario hovering in mid-air, entirely exposed save for a pair of surprisingly cheerful, bright yellow undergarments adorned with large, dark blue polka dots. A stunned silence fell over the multi-guild crusade. Hundreds of hardened warriors, notorious for their brutality, stared up at their bankrolling patron, now a figure of absurd, exposed indignity. Vario’s face, already purple with rage, turned a shade of mottled crimson that clashed spectacularly with his polka-dotted briefs. [ARMOR SUNDERED! A MAGNIFICENT DISPLAY OF… UNDRESSING! ABSOLUTE DISGRACE ACHIEVED!] the System announced, a hint of genuine amusement in its booming voice. [WITNESS THE BARE TRUTH OF CONFLICT!] Khurun, who had been watching with wide, bovine eyes, let out a snort. It started as a low rumble, then escalated into a full, booming laugh that shook the stone tiles. A half-eaten 'Fire-Horn' carrot, still clutched in his massive hand, flew from his nose with a loud *thwip* as he convulsed with mirth. The beast, sensing the sudden shift in atmosphere, whined, its heads casting confused glances at its disrobed master. The intimidating aura of the Alchemist Conglomerate, the multi-guild crusade, and the terrifying hybrid monster, shattered into a million tiny pieces of polka-dotted absurdity. The Bloodfang Guild leader, a hulking brute named Grym, actually pinched the bridge of his nose. A few Shadowspine assassins, usually impassive, coughed to hide their snickers. Vario, humiliated beyond the capacity for coherent thought, screamed. “You! You… *peasant farmer*! You will regret this day! You will regret seeing Grand Alchemist Vario in… in this state!” His face contorted, a vein throbbing in his temple. He slammed his fist down on the crystal barge’s console. “You think you have won? You have only fueled my fury!” His eyes, blazing with an insane light, fixed on a dark, pulsating orb embedded in the console. “You leave me no choice! The Blight Core! Activate The Blight Core!” With a terrible, grinding sound, the orb whirred to life. Black tendrils of shadow erupted from it, tearing through the pristine sky. The clear, cloud-kissed air of the Qullu’s highest reaches began to curdle, darkening rapidly. The sun, once a brilliant beacon, was swiftly consumed by an encroaching, unnatural gloom.
