Chapter 6 of 10

Operation Aggressive Terraforming

Its magical aura, rich and potent, hung in the air like warm pollen. The Bloodfang raiders, still frozen, felt a primordial dread bloom in their guts. This was the stark realization that any misstep would coat them in pressurized rind and pulp. Sullka, however, saw only the potential for perfect crop rotation. He gently patted the gourd, then rose, his massive frame casting a long shadow over the cowering hunters. His gaze swept over his meticulously organized rows, then to the chaotic cluster of invaders. “Khurun!” Sullka’s voice boomed, startling the minotaur, who had been contemplating a particularly large stalk of 'Crimsonheart' celery. “Nayra! Operation Aggressive Terraforming is a go!” Khurun dropped the celery, a low growl rumbling in his chest. His eyes, usually fixed on dinner, now held a glint of purposeful intent. Nayra, who had been observing the cowering raiders with a detached professional interest, blinked once. “Operation what?” Her daggers, still gleaming despite their earlier shattering, were already in her hands by instinct. Sullka pointed a finger thicker than a tree branch towards the perimeter of his cultivated land. “We need ditches. Deep ones. For drainage. For *irrigation*. And if they happen to be deep enough to deter invaders, well, that’s just efficient land management, isn’t it?” He gestured grandly. “Khurun, you’re on the heavy digging. Nayra, precision work along the fruit orchards. We need channels for the ‘River of Plenty’ — a nutrient-rich, magically enhanced water flow for the ‘Solstice Sprouts’.” He paused, adjusting an imaginary cap. “Think of it as… strategic waterworks.” Khurun roared, a sound that shook the remaining Bloodfang hunters to their core, and charged towards the designated digging zone. His massive hooves tore through the soil, sending clods of earth flying like cannonballs. The ground buckled and groaned as the minotaur, now seeing his favorite dinner being threatened, began to carve out a trench wide enough to swallow a siege engine whole. Nayra, after a moment of processing the sheer absurdity, simply nodded. Her daggers, instead of being used for throats, now became extensions of her arms, slicing precise, clean lines through the rich, volcanic earth. Her movements, still fluid and deadly, now served the purpose of creating perfect irrigation channels, her stoic face betraying no hint of the internal confusion. Meanwhile, far below on the seventh floor, Qhapaq, the elder shaman, cackled with glee. He stood before a group of frantic, battle-weary provisioners from the invading forces, who were desperately trying to re-establish their wagon routes after the initial skirmish. They wore the insignia of the ‘Jade Fist’ — a rival guild to the Bloodfang, who had joined the crusade out of sheer greed. “The Warlord’s ‘Wrath-Bulbs’!” Qhapaq announced, holding aloft a crate of purplish-red onions that vibrated with suppressed energy. “A rare delicacy from the Zenith, guaranteed to ‘energize’ your weary troops and ‘neutralize’ any lingering… *unpleasantness* from your foes!” His eyes twinkled. “Only a thousand gold coins per crate for this floor’s exclusive release!” The lead provisioner eyed the shaman suspiciously. “Energize? Neutralize? What in the Qullu are these?” “Organic, potent, and utterly devastating to morale… *of the enemy*, of course,” Qhapaq insisted, pushing the crate forward. “Perfect for ‘cleansing’ encampments. Think of the psychological impact! The… *aroma*!” He winked conspiratorially. “Also, they’re excellent against pests. Really makes things… *pop*.” The provisioner, desperate and facing a collapsing logistical chain, reluctantly handed over a pouch of shimmering gold. “Fine. We’ll take three crates. But if my men get food poisoning, shaman, you’ll be sharing a stew pot with a gristle-beast.” Qhapaq bowed deeply, a wide grin splitting his face. “A pleasure doing business!” As the provisioner’s men loaded the crates onto a mule cart, Qhapaq watched, a sly smile on his lips. Moments later, a series of muffled *thumps* echoed from the lower levels, followed by a sudden, chaotic cacophony of shouts, screams, and the sound of freight carts overturning. A cloud of pungent, tear-inducing smoke billowed upwards, briefly obscuring the sky. The 'Jade Fist' convoy was now not only sabotaged but also coated in a potent, explosive onion paste. [SUPPLY LINE COLLAPSE! THE ALCHEMIST CONGLOMERATE’S RESOURCES HAVE BEEN… *RECALIBRATED*!] Back on the Zenith, Sullka was meticulously tying up a sprawling tomato vine, humming a tuneless melody. Nayra worked beside him, her movements graceful as she trained other vines along a carefully constructed trellis. The sun, finally unhindered by Vario's barrier thanks to Qhapaq's bat guano transactions, warmed their backs. The air was thick with the scent of ripening fruit and freshly tilled earth. “You know,” Sullka said, his voice softer than she’d ever heard it, “you’re really good at this. The way you handle the soil… the precision of your cuts…” He blushed, his massive, tattooed cheeks taking on a faint crimson hue. “I mean, for an assassin, you’re… an excellent farmhand.” Nayra paused, her hands still on a plump ‘Sunflare’ tomato. Her stoic expression faltered, just for a fraction of a second. A warmth bloomed in her chest, an unfamiliar sensation that had nothing to do with the sun. She glanced at him, her dark eyes searching his. “Farmhand?” The word felt strange on her tongue, yet not unpleasant. “Is that… a compliment from a warlord?” Sullka nodded vigorously, nearly knocking a ripe ‘Lunarberry’ tomato off its stem. “The best! You’re my favorite. I mean, you’re the *only* one, besides Khurun, but still. Your dedication to the plant life… it’s truly commendable.” He smiled, a genuine, open smile that made his fearsome face seem almost gentle. He reached out, his calloused thumb flicking away a clump of dry peat stuck near her temple, catching her breath. Before either could speak again, a searing *whoosh* cut through the air. A flaming arrow, wreathed in dark magic, streaked past Sullka’s head and plunged directly into a prize-winning ‘Ocean’s Heart’ watermelon. The fruit, already swollen with magical energy, burst in a spectacular spray of green pulp and shimmering seeds. A sheet of scalding steam washed over them. [YOU HAVE BLED THE GREEN BLOOD! VENGEANCE IS NIGH! THE LIFE ESSENCE OF THE SEVENTH HARVEST HAS BEEN SPILLED!] Sullka stared, horrified, at the ruined watermelon. “My… my ‘Ocean’s Heart’!” His voice was a low growl, a sound that had nothing to do with gentle farming. He looked up, his eyes narrowing, following the trajectory of the arrow towards the vast, open sky above the Qullu. A new, ominous shadow fell over the Zenith. Through a shimmering distortion, a colossal crystal barge, adorned with banners of the Alchemist Conglomerate, descended from the clouds. At its prow, Grand Alchemist Vario stood, a sneer on his face, flanked by a monstrous, three-headed chimera that exhaled plumes of corrosive, defoliant poison.
