Chapter 6 of 10

The Zombie Orchestra

A frantic metronome beat against Tasmira’s skull. The prompts, stark and unforgiving, floated before her. Ziyad, locked mid-sway, looked chalk-pale and brittle. The gaping maw of the sky-rift pulsed with a sickly violet light, threatening to swallow itself whole. Time, still suspended, hummed with a tension that scraped at her teeth. [Option A: Seal the Rift. Preserve Ziyad’s life. Worlds remain fractured. Catastrophe delayed, not averted.] [Option B: Force Rift Open. Risk Ziyad’s detonation. Worlds merge. Catastrophe potentially averted, or amplified.] “Delayed?” Tasmira’s voice, a gravelly whisper in the silent void, sounded absurdly loud. “I don’t *delay* things. I smash them open, or I kick them down. And Ziyad’s not dying on my watch. Not after all this.” Her gaze snapped to the Maestro’s Baton, clutched in Badr’s frozen hand. The idiot, motionless mid-smirk, clearly believed victory was his. He didn’t understand what was at stake, not really. This wasn’t about petty revenge anymore, not entirely. It was about smashing apart a rigged system, saving worlds, and making sure Ziyad got his triumphant return. “Option B,” Tasmira declared, her voice firm, reverberating strangely in the arrested air. A jolt of crisp force rushed through her veins, snapping the bind on her limbs. The metronome within her console sped up, a frantic drum roll before a dive. [Harmonic Overseer: Choice Registered. Initiating Rift-Forcing Protocol. Warning: High Strain.] Time lurched forward with a sickening *thwump*. Dust motes rained down. The distant neon wash of Neo-Veridia beamed through the rift, closer now, sharper. Ziyad gasped, swaying violently, his blind eyes wide and unfocused. Badr, released from temporal stasis, blinked, his smirk sagging as the ceiling breach groaned and snapped shut at high speed. “Oh, no, you don’t!” Tasmira yelled, her eyes scanning the grand hall. Her gaze locked onto the enormous, ornate grand piano sitting forgotten in a shadowy alcove. It was ridiculous. It was perfect. “Qasim, watch your head!” Without waiting for a reply, Tasmira charged the piano, a whirlwind of furious motion. She gripped the polished, heavy lid, muscles screaming, and with a grunt that rattled her teeth, *flipped* the entire instrument. The grand piano, legs flailing like an overturned beetle, sailed through the air with astonishing speed, a black projectile aimed directly at the closing maw of the rift. It hit the ethereal tear with a deafening *CRACK*, not unlike a celestial tuning fork striking a cosmic gong. Splinters of polished wood exploded outwards as the rift shrieked, then settled, held stubbornly agape by the piano’s twisted, impaled frame. Neo-Veridia’s garish lights pulsed through the new, jagged opening, a constant beacon of synthetic smog. [Harmonic Overseer: Unexpected Rift Stabilization Method Detected. Musicality: Dubious. Efficiency: Unquestionable. Commencing Operatic Fanfare!] Instead of a fanfare, a blaring, off-key circus polka blared from her interface, accompanied by the tinny squeak of a clown horn. She ignored it, turning to Qasim, whose face was a masterpiece of bewildered exasperation, still mid-reach for his tactical sidearm. “What in the name of the Prime Conductor was that?!” Qasim spluttered, his tailored Conservatory uniform now dusted with piano shrapnel. “You just threw an acoustic heirloom into a spatial fracture! You could have destabilized the entire—” “It worked, didn’t it?” Tasmira shot back, already pivoting. Ziyad, propped against a crumbling pillar, sagged, his breathing still shallow. He needed to recover. “Now, where’s that idiot Badr?” But Badr wasn’t where they’d left him. He stood on the grand stage, bathed in the sickly green glow of the Maestro’s Baton. Around him, the academy's elite roster, pinned motionless by Ziyad’s aria, began to stir. Their eyes, once bright with ambition, were now vacant, their movements stiff and jerky. Their faces lacked thought; strings pulled them forward. “Oh, you learned a parlor trick, you talentless thief?” Tasmira sneered, checking the advancing line: a parade leader holding a thrumming ceremonial snare, a flutist with silver pipes humming with low static, and a fiddler dragging horsehair across weeping wire. “Silence, savage!” Badr’s voice, amplified by the Baton, boomed with an unearned authority. “You ruined everything! But I have the Maestro’s Baton! I control the very pulse of Al-Muraq! You will witness the true power of the Conservatory’s finest, bent to *my* will!” The 'zombie orchestra' shuffled forward, a dissonant cacophony of scraping bows and hollow drumbeats. Their instruments, normally tools of exquisite sonic art, were now weapons. The drum major slammed his staff, and a shockwave of percussive force rippled across the polished floor. The silver pipe curled into a shrieking frequency that rattled teeth. The wire strings buzzed with discordant mana, flinging razor-sharp sonic projectiles. [Harmonic Overseer: Dissonant Ensemble Engaged. Cue Battle Theme: Polka of Pain!] The circus music intensified, a ridiculous counterpoint to the impending doom. Tasmira grinned, a feral glint in her eyes. “Finally, some target practice! Qasim, barriers up! I’ll handle the rhythm section!” Qasim sighed, a sound of utter defeat, but his hands moved with practiced grace. His UI flared, projecting shimmering hexagonal barriers of hard light that deflected the violinist’s sonic shards. “Mindless puppets. This is a waste of my tactical expertise!” he grumbled, deflecting another barrage with a grunt. Tasmira didn’t bother with finesse. She lunged, snatching two brass plates from a paralyzed boy's grip. With a mighty heave, she flung one, frisbee-style, directly at the drum major. It spun with lethal speed, shearing off the drum’s ornate head with a satisfying *CLANG*, sending wood and parchment flying. The drum major faltered, his blank face showing a split second of confusion before Badr’s spell seized him anew. “Stay focused, Tasmira! Their music eats away at our operational integrity!” Qasim warned, his barriers dimming under the relentless sonic barrage. “A direct hit from their combined resonance could… well, you get the picture!” Tasmira laughed, a wild, joyous sound. She met the flutist’s high-pitched attack by clapping the brass pair together, detonating an ear-splitting *CRASH* that sent the piper tumbling backward, clutching bleeding ears. “They call this ‘erosion’? I call it Tuesday! These kids need to learn how to play *loud*!” They fought back-to-back, a study in chaotic synergy. Qasim, precise and defensive, blocked and parried, his defensive barriers holding a thin perimeter. Tasmira plowed ahead with raw momentum, employing the brass discs like oversized throwing blades, bludgeons, and makeshift sonic deflectors. The circus music blared on, a constant, humiliating soundtrack to her property damage. Gradually, the 'zombie orchestra' began to thin, their prized gear splintering under Tasmira’s brutal percussive blows. Badr, witnessing the destruction, began to visibly panic. His grip on the Maestro’s Baton tightened, his face contorted in a desperate snarl. “You… you just don’t understand! I was supposed to be the hero! The Conservatory’s legacy rests with me!” he shrieked, retreating towards a shadowy archway at the back of the stage. Tasmira grinned, her eyes narrowed. “You’re no hero, Badr. You’re a glorified art thief with a fancy stick. Now, drop the Baton before I make you eat it!” They backed him against the arch, Qasim’s force-fields boxing him in while Tasmira raised her brass plate for the final blow. Badr whimpered, his eyes darting wildly. Just as Tasmira prepared to launch her attack, a figure darted from the shadows, throwing herself in front of Badr, arms outstretched. “No! Please! You’re hurting my fiancé! He didn’t mean any of this!” Lulwa, tear-streaked and desperate, shielded Badr with her own body. Tasmira halted, the brass disc held aloft. “Lulwa, get out of the way! He’s using you!” “Never! He’s wonderful, he’s kind, he’s perfect! You’re just mean!” Lulwa sobbed, clinging to Badr’s arm. A vile smirk twisted Badr’s face. He clutched Lulwa tighter, shoving her forward. “Perfect timing, my dear! You truly are my muse!” With a sickening click, he triggered something hidden in the archway. The floor beneath Tasmira and Qasim vanished. “What the—?!” Qasim yelled, gravity suddenly asserting its cruel dominance. They plunged downwards, into a gaping, inky blackness, the last thing Tasmira heard being Badr’s cackling laughter and Lulwa’s terrified scream as they fell into the bottomless abyss beneath the estate.
