Chapter 5 of 10
Crescendo of the Rift

“He’s here to level the place.”
The roar of the sonic cannons ripped through the air, a guttural thrum that rattled the academy's antique leaded glass. Tasmira swore, a string of colourful curses in a language Qasim wouldn’t recognize. She grabbed Ziyad’s arm, ready to pull him behind the thick stone walls. “Get down! What kind of idiot brings heavy artillery to a… a musical academy?”
But Ziyad didn’t move. His head tilted, his blind eyes fixed on the distant, unseen source of the sound. Cold pricked the hairs on Tasmira's neck; the broken captive from the dungeon was gone. This was something else entirely.
[Harmonic Overseer: Battle Overture Initiated! Tempo: Presto Furioso!]
The first blast hit. Not a direct impact on the building, but a focused, concussive wave of pure sound that slammed into the Conservatory’s outer wards. The wards, rigged only to deflect petulant noble duels, flashed blinding white before folding inward with a dry snap of spent resonance. Dust and debris rained down as the protective dome vanished. The ground shook. A vase of wilting night-blooms tumbled from a nearby pedestal, shattering on the polished floor.
“Ziyad, move!” Qasim yelled, fingers clutching at his empty scabbard. He shoved Tasmira towards a structural pillar, but she was too focused on the boy. Ziyad stepped forward, a strange, serene expression on his face. His tattered robes billowed around him as if caught in an invisible wind.
He raised his hands, not in a defensive gesture, but like a conductor preparing for the most important performance of his life. The air around him shimmered, growing impossibly heavy. The faint hum of his suppressed power swelled into a density that scraped against the teeth. It felt like standing inside a drum just before it’s struck.
The second volley of sonic cannon fire erupted, a coordinated barrage that focused on the Conservatory’s main facade. The air distorted, warping with the raw force of amplified sound. It was an assault designed to pulverize stone and turn flesh to jelly.
Ziyad opened his mouth. No sound came out at first, only a vast, terrifying inhalation that seemed to draw in the very assault itself. The destructive sound waves, instead of striking the building, converged on him, funnelling into his small frame. His body glowed with an internal, pulsating light, and the veins on his neck stood out like cords. Tasmira watched as the artillery's annihilating shockwaves funneled straight into his chest.
Then, he exhaled.
It began as a whisper, a low, sustained note that vibrated deep in Tasmira’s bones. It crested swiftly into a soaring, alien aria devoid of words, packed with primordial fury. It echoed like grinding tectonic plates, hollow and crushing. The notes pulsed outwards, not as sound waves, but as visible ripples of pure, destructive force.
Where the incoming blasts had struck, the plaza outside vanished. Ornate fountains imploded into chalk dust. Century-old cypress trunks disintegrated into pale cinders. Cobblestones heaved and melted into slag before blowing outward into an expanding trench. The Royal Sonic Guard’s vehicles, sleek armoured beasts moments ago, crumpled and twisted, their metal groaning in protest before being compressed into dense, smoking cubes. Their operators, caught in the outermost fringes of the aria, simply ceased to be. No blood, no scream. Just absence.
The entire grounds were gone, replaced by a smoking, perfectly circular chasm. And at its centre, undisturbed, stood Ziyad.
[Harmonic Overseer: Unforeseen Cadenza! Power Output: Catastrophic! World Axis: Instability Detected!]
The backlash bypassed the physical. Above the scorched crater, the upper atmosphere tore open. A shimmering, jagged rift, like a wound in the fabric of reality, ripped open. Al-Muraq’s crystalline blue gave way to towering neon skyscrapers and twitching holographic billboards. The distinct, acrid scent of ozone and synthetic exhaust fumes drifted through the gap. It was Neo-Veridia, the cyberpunk district from Tasmira’s first transmigration jump, hanging suspended, impossibly close.
Tasmira stared, teeth bared. This was merely an adjacent district, stacked atop the others like plates on Qasim’s glitching map.
“The districts… they’re merging,” Qasim whispered, blood draining from his lips as he tapped his holographic menu. His earlier 'Class-A Anomaly' warning for Ziyad now screamed 'Planetary Collapse Imminent!' “He’s not just destroying their oppressors, Tasmira. He’s destroying the *barriers*.”
The petty scope of her assigned vendettas suddenly withered. Ziyad was an engine of mass destruction. Ruining highborn snobs meant nothing if he had to blast the entire continent back into one piece to survive.
Qasim hovered a thumb over his console's emergency purge protocol. “He… he isn’t an anomaly to be contained,” Qasim mumbled, his previous mission parameters warring with the immediate, terrifying reality. “He’s the *key*. He’s the only one who can… heal the fracture.” His UI updated its primary directive: [System: Protect Primary Anomaly. Prevent Collapse.]
[Harmonic Overseer: Interlude – Unscheduled Intrusion! Maestro’s Baton: Critical Theft Detected!]
A shrill yelp bounced down the manor's lower corridor. A small figure, draped in a familiar, ridiculously expensive tunic, darted across the main hall’s entrance, heading towards a side passage. Badr. Amidst the chaos of the courtyard’s annihilation, he had slipped in, taking advantage of the distraction. In his hand glinted the Maestro’s Baton, the relic used to harness primal Resonant Weaving.
Ziyad, still radiating an aura of raw power, swayed. The immense magical drain of his aria was clearly taking its toll. The rift in the sky, still gaping, pulsed with chaotic energy, threatening to destabilize further. His breathing grew shallow, ragged.
[Harmonic Overseer: Crescendo of the Rift – Choice Point!]
Time locked. Dust motes hung dead in the air. The faint, distant sounds from Neo-Veridia died. Tasmira, Qasim, even Badr, caught mid-stride, were perfectly still. Only Tasmira remained awake as her console projected two stark prompts against a frantic metronome.
[Option A: Seal the Rift. Preserve Ziyad’s life. Worlds remain fractured. Catastrophe delayed, not averted.]
[Option B: Force Rift Open. Risk Ziyad’s detonation. Worlds merge. Catastrophe potentially averted, or amplified.]
