The Thaw That Follows

Otylia Rostova’s career as a museum curator ends in spectacular disgrace when a rival exposes her life's work as an elaborate forgery during a live, highly publicized gala. Unwilling to let her fragile younger sister, Danica, suffer the ensuing media circus, the world-weary and endlessly sarcastic Otylia drags her to the freezing, isolated slopes of Mount Vintara. Her goal is simple: lay low and fulfill the final bucket list of her deceased friend, Jurek. They find refuge in a creaking, snow-drowned cabin run by Leszek, a quiet innkeeper with a stare as cold as the frost outside. In the eerie stillness, Otylia and Leszek forge a reluctant, cynical alliance, finding strange, platonic comfort in their shared isolation. But as Otylia checks off Jurek's seemingly innocent tasks, the atmospheric peace shatters. Nobody mentioned the mountain's gruesome lore: the bucket list is a ritual with a terrifying, unspoken time limit tied to the winter solstice. They barely escape the mountain's wrath, fleeing back to the safety of the city. But when Leszek suddenly appears at Otylia’s apartment door amidst a torrential downpour, she realizes the nightmare followed them home. What exactly did they awaken in the snow, and what is Leszek really running from?
