Chapter 4 of 10
The Out-of-Bounds Excursion

Pezhman’s vision swam with static. He tasted grit, not fear. The air, thick with pulverized rock, choked him. Laleh coughed violently beside him, a low, guttural sound, while Behrouz’s desperate cry was abruptly muffled. Pezhman, still shielding Laleh, felt the crushing pressure ease, replaced by a disorienting sensation of freefall. The darkness wasn't absolute; it pulsed with a faint, unnatural violet glow, revealing nothing but an infinite, featureless expanse. No ceiling, no floor, just a vast, empty canvas. He pushed himself off Laleh, landing on an unrendered plane that shimmered with residual magic. Behrouz materialized beside them a moment later, tumbling head over heels before catching himself on the same unseen surface, panting. His ornate robes were torn, dust-caked. His eyes, usually sharp with calculation, darted around in bewildered panic.
“Where… where are we?” Behrouz rasped, his voice a raw whisper. “The cavern… it’s gone.”
Laleh slowly rose, her movements stiff. She ran a hand over the empty ground, a deep frown creasing her brow. “This is no natural place. The ley-lines… they are absent. There is only… emptiness.” She looked at Pezhman, her gaze searching. “Did your… guidance… bring us here?”
[Terrain mesh bypass successful. Environment: Debug Zone 001. Current location: Shai’sar Caverns below-map.]
Pezhman ignored the system message. Natural place? Empty? Only to the uninitiated. This was pure geometry, the bedrock of the world engine, exposed. He hefted his Teaspoon. Its microscopic hit box, usually a liability, was now his greatest asset. He’d used the collapsing cavern as a gravity assist, aiming for the perfect angle to clip through the distressed terrain. A risky maneuver, but less so than digging through tons of rock with a spoon.
“We are… between worlds,” Pezhman announced, his voice devoid of emotion. “A liminal space. The path ahead requires… navigating unseen truths.” He gestured vaguely into the purple void with his spoon, as if divining arcane secrets. “Follow my lead. Step precisely where I step.”
Behrouz stared, his mouth parting in a mixture of awe and fear. “Between worlds? Is this a test of faith, then? A trial by the Sunbird, to prove our worthiness for your… unique enlightenment?” He looked at Laleh, who nodded slowly, her expression solemn.
“Indeed,” Laleh murmured, her voice hushed. “Master Pezhman always finds the hidden path. This void… it feels like the very heart of creation, yet utterly unformed. A place of pure spirit, perhaps, where one must perceive with more than mere sight.”
Pezhman resisted the urge to roll his eyes. Pure spirit, she called it. He called it a dev build. He took a careful step, the glass-slick floor creaking with a faint, simulated sound only he could hear. [Warning: Clipping through unrendered geometry. Potential for 'fall-through-world' error. Maintain exact pathing.] The path was a narrow strip of unrendered collision. Stray even an inch, and they’d drop into the endless kill-plane below. He had memorized the general coordinates of the mythical sword's hardcoded spawn point from ancient patch notes, but navigating the invisible architecture was always a delicate dance.
He moved with an exact, almost robotic cadence, his spoon held out like a divining rod. Behrouz and Laleh followed, their movements tentative, their faces etched with reverence. Behrouz stumbled once, nearly losing his footing. “Forgive my weakness, Master! My worldly eyes betray me!”
“Focus your spirit, Behrouz,” Laleh advised, her voice surprisingly gentle. “Allow his aura to guide you. He perceives what we cannot.” She then turned her gaze to Pezhman, a soft, almost vulnerable look in her usually cold eyes. “This journey… it reveals so much. Your wisdom… it transcends logic. You see beyond the veil of this world, into its very essence. You rescued me, you purified Behrouz, and now you lead us through this… spiritual abyss.” She took a deep breath. “Pezhman, I… I have come to realize the depth of your selfless devotion. My heart, once cold, now recognizes the purity of your intent. I would follow you to the edges of Roshanak, and beyond. My… platonic admiration for your profound kindness… it grows with every step.”
Her confession hung in the dead air. Pezhman, however, was already two steps ahead, his attention caught by a faint blue glow in the distance. He ignored her entirely, his eyes fixed on the anomaly.
“Hold,” Pezhman commanded, his voice sharp. He moved towards the glow, carefully bypassing a cluster of untextured rocks that floated in the void. It was a hidden lore tablet, shimmering with arcane script. He had never seen this particular one in any of his previous runs. Curious, he pressed his spoon against it. The script instantly resolved into a single, stark sentence in his UI.
[Lore Fragment Unlocked: 'The Sunbird's Code is not merely prophecy, but the fundamental operating system of Roshanak. Its decree is hardcoded destiny.']
Pezhman blinked. An operating system? Hardcoded destiny? This wasn't just prophecy; it was literal, unalterable programming. The Eclipse Calamity wasn't a natural disaster; it was a scheduled event, a subroutine of the world itself. This changed everything. His attempts to sequence-break weren't just exploiting glitches; he was trying to rewrite the source code.
He pushed past the tablet, the new information buzzing in his mind. The legendary sword was close. He could feel the unique ‘item_spawn’ collision data beneath his feet. He took another five measured steps, then stopped. Suspended in the purple-tinged emptiness, several dozen meters ahead, hovered a blade of pure, shimmering starlight. The 'Dawnbreaker', the fabled relic meant for Navid, now waiting for him. It floated gracefully, just above a faint, almost imperceptible red grid that spanned the entire void.
[Item detected: 'Dawnbreaker'. Legendary artifact. Activation coordinates: X: 1234.56, Y: 789.01, Z: -100.22.]
[Warning: Retrieving 'Dawnbreaker' will trigger 'Corrupted Mana Beast: Laleh’s Inner Demon' boss encounter. Difficulty: Extreme. Recommended level: 60. Current party level: Pezhman 12, Laleh 25, Behrouz 20.]
Pezhman stared. A boss fight? With Laleh’s *inner demon*? He glanced back at Laleh, who was now gazing at him with an expression of beatific devotion, completely oblivious to the glowing red grid or the ominous notification. He had valued her for her movement speed buff, her tanking capabilities. But a corrupted mana beast *inside* her? That was a design choice he hadn't accounted for. And it was waiting for him to grab the sword. He looked at the Dawnbreaker, then at the kill-plane beneath it, then back at Laleh. His optimal route, already a shattered mess, was about to become an impossible one. If he touched that sword, Laleh would become a boss fight, right here, in the textureless void, with a lethal kill-plane below. He had to get that sword, but he couldn't risk losing his tank, let alone turning her into an enraged monster. This was a dilemma he had no patch notes for.
