Chapter 3 of 10
Friendship Check
1.2k words
Pezhman remained outwardly impassive, his gaze flicking between Behrouz and the deeper shadows. The air in the Shai’sar Caverns, already heavy with the scent of damp earth, now carried a faint, acrid tang – the metallic hint of old blood and something else, something magical and malevolent. Laleh, beside him, tensed, her hand instinctively going to the hilt of the curved ceremonial dagger at her hip. Her eyes, usually serene, narrowed into icy slits, reflecting the faint light from the cave entrance.
“Behrouz,” Pezhman said, voice flat, analytical. “What a convenient meeting. I trust you’re here to offer your considerable talents?” The system rarely spawned a mid-tier named NPC without scripting an encounter trigger, and Behrouz’s posture telegraphed an aggressive affinity check.
Behrouz laughed, a low, rumbling sound that seemed to vibrate the very dust motes in the air. “Talents? Oh, I assure you, my talents are precisely why I’m here. And why, for instance, a certain *original* hero decided to meet the earth so unceremoniously outside the Caravanserai gates.” He paused, letting the implication hang heavy. “That little collision error? My handiwork. A slight recalibration of the market stall’s physics mesh, just so. Navid always did have a rather predictable pathing algorithm.”
Laleh gasped, a sharp, choked sound. “You… you sabotaged the Chosen One? For what reason, traitor?” Her voice was cold, laced with a fury that promised swift, brutal justice.
Behrouz merely shrugged, a theatrical gesture. “The Sunbird’s Code dictates fate, High Priestess. But even the gods can’t account for a few well-placed glitches. The cabal understands that. Navid was… an obstacle. And now, Pezhman, you’re another.” He snapped his fingers, and from the deeper recesses of the cavern, four figures emerged, cloaked in black, sliding forward without a sound. They drew slender, dark blades that drank the scant lantern glow. “The Dusk Serpents. Elite executioners. They’re here to ensure you don’t upset the delicate balance we’ve so carefully maintained.”
“A covert cell?” Pezhman muttered, dismissing the stalkers. Behrouz served the conspirators driving the Eclipse Calamity, but hidden code still governed NPC disposition. A solvable math problem. The guards, however, presented high base DPS and probable bleed debuffs—fatal against an unarmored merchant.
[Threat Level: EXTREME. Engage Hostiles? Y/N]
He didn't need the system to tell him. Engaging them directly was suicide. But Behrouz… Behrouz was a key. A potential high-value asset, if he could turn him. This was a ‘friendship check’ in its purest form. Not about combat, but about allegiance. And Pezhman had the perfect exploit.
The nearest guard lunged, edge whistling toward Pezhman’s collarbone. Pezhman twitched three paces to the left along a tile seam, letting the steel clear his tunic by half an inch. A second blade swept low at his shins; he hopped, canceling his falling animation with a single micro-step.
[Invincibility Frame activated: Dodge. Duration: 0.2s]
His hands, however, were busy. As the blade-dancers pressed their assault, Pezhman’s fingers flicked through his inventory interface. He had mapped his quick-slots with unique relics pulled straight from the out-of-bounds developer containers beneath the bazaar.
“Behrouz,” Pezhman called out evenly as steel grazed his sleeve. Laleh slapped a pressure bandage over the scrape without looking away from the perimeter. “You speak of purpose, of fate. But what of *your* purpose? What of your own path?” He flicked his wrist, lofting an intricate apparatus of polished bronze and spun crystal across the cavern.
[Item gifted: ‘Aeon’s Gaze – Chronometer of Fates’]
[Behrouz Loyalty: +25%]
Behrouz caught it mid-air, his mocking smirk faltering. He stared at the ornate chronometer, a relic whispered about in the deepest lore of Roshanak, an item almost impossible to acquire. “What in the…?”
Another blade cleaved the space above his head as he ducked. He produced a second relic—a parchment inscribed with glowing azure script—and spun it across the flagstones.
[Item gifted: ‘Whisper-Silk Scroll of Unbinding’]
[Behrouz Loyalty: +30%]
Behrouz fumbled the scroll, staring in stunned disbelief. “You… you have these? These are ancient relics!” His mockery cracked. The attackers, baffled by the unsolicited bribery ritual, hesitated mid-stride.
“Legends are merely un-optimized loot tables,” Pezhman retorted, ducking another strike, his pewter spoon tucked securely into his sash. Direct combat was mathematically unviable; this was an exploit targeting the companion disposition meter. “Do your handlers offer you belonging, Behrouz? Or merely expendable status?” He flung a humming shard of obsidian.
[Item gifted: ‘Gleaming Obsidian Shard of Khayyam’]
[Behrouz Loyalty: +20%]
Behrouz caught the shard, his hands trembling. He looked from the priceless artifacts in his grip to his former comrades, then back to Pezhman, who dodged another thrust with mechanical precision. The presents kept flying—rare quest items sacrificed purely to max out the target's hidden approval gauge.

[Behrouz Loyalty: +10%]
[Behrouz Loyalty: 100% - MAX]
Behrouz dropped to his knees, tears streaming down his face, a raw, guttural sob escaping him. He clutched the treasures to his chest, his shoulders shaking. “A home… he offers me a home… not just a weapon, not just a tool…” He looked up at Pezhman, his eyes red and swollen, but gleaming with a newfound, fierce devotion. “You… you forgive me? After everything? You offer me true kindness?”
[Entity Behrouz allegiance shift: ‘Hostile’ -> ‘Devoted’]
“Always, Behrouz,” Pezhman said, without missing a beat, as he spun away from a Viper’s blade. “There’s always a place for those who seek to optimize their potential.”
Behrouz let out a primal scream, a roar of rage and agony, and surged to his feet. He hurled the heavy bronze chronometer into the lead attacker's temple. Bone gave way with a sharp crack; the man collapsed in a heap. “Liars!” Behrouz bellowed, chest heaving. “You treated me like refuse! He offers *everything*!”
He snatched the fallen fighter's sabre and threw himself at his former squad. Behrouz lacked frame-perfect timing, but maximum allegiance programming conferred an unhinged aggro modifier. The surviving hostiles scrambled backward, unprepared for their collaborator's sudden frenzy. His strikes were crude, heavy, driven by raw fervor.
Laleh stepped into the opening, ceremonial dagger spinning in a practiced rhythm of parries and thrusts. Pezhman maintained his perimeter circle, conserving stamina while tracking the blue text feeds flickering across his retina. Steel grated against steel as Behrouz drove the surviving skirmishers into the cavern wall. The bedrock vibrated underfoot.
[Structural Integrity: Shai’sar Caverns – CRITICAL]
Small rocks began to patter from the ceiling, growing quickly into larger chunks. A deep, groaning sound rumbled through the ancient stone. Laleh shouted, “The cave! It’s collapsing!”
Pezhman swore. The battle had caused too much environmental damage. A forced sequence break, a new obstacle. Just his luck.
[Eclipse Calamity countdown accelerated by sequence break. 72 hours remaining.]
The red text pulsed ominously in Pezhman’s vision. Behrouz, still mid-swing, froze as a massive section of the ceiling above him groaned, then detached, plummeting towards them, bringing with it an avalanche of rock and dust. Pezhman grabbed Laleh, dragging her away from the direct impact zone, just as the entire cavern plunged into suffocating darkness, the sounds of falling rock and Behrouz’s desperate cry the last things to register before the world became a crushing, echoing silence. He braced for impact, the metallic tang of fear now mixed with the familiar taste of dust and the cold certainty that his optimal route had just hit a very large, very unexpected wall.
