Chapter 9 of 10
The Sovereign's Gambit
826 words
As if on cue, a tremor rippled through the very fabric of existence. The stone cavern ceiling above groaned under immense atmospheric pressure. A tolling resonance shook the void, and the sky visible through the cavern's fissures splintered like brittle ice. Not lightning, not thunder, but the raw, unfiltered rupture of reality itself.
Through the gaping wounds in the firmament, monstrous forms descended. Not stars, but metal leviathans, dark against the bruised, bleeding heavens. They were colossal, their underbellies bristling with glowing apertures that hummed with killing power. The air turned thin and dry as the light of Canglan’s sun vanished beneath the iron silhouettes of those dreadnoughts.
Pressure hammered downward across the peak. High above, shafts of incandescent heat lanced down into distant plains, incinerating stone walls to cinders. Shockwaves thudded against the outer cliffs, carrying distant ruins into the cavern.
Zifeng stared at the horizon, the newborn spirit furnace churning within his dantian. He felt it then, a chilling whisper from his past self, a memory not his own, yet undeniable. The final step. The grand design. His past life had not only sought to evade them, but to use his final reincarnation as a weapon. A self-detonation. His newly formed spirit soul was meant to explode, a cataclysmic detonation to rip the fleet apart.
To shield Xiaoxiao, to shield Lin Muyue, to preserve this land, he was supposed to discard his life once more. The cycle of ruin demanded another total loss. He prepared to ignite his meridians.
He leaned forward, intent on walking directly beneath the descending hulls.
*SMACK!* A stinging blow whipped across his jaw, driving his boots back across the grit.
Lin Muyue stood before him, her hand still raised, her chest heaving. Her green eyes snapped with anger, ash coating her torn teal sleeves.
“What are you doing?!” Her voice cracked, cutting through the thrum of falling engines. “Are you truly so blind? Do you think I endured all of this—the brewing, the sneaking, facing down an arbiter, fighting through guards—just to watch you discard yourself?!”
Zifeng pulled back, the stinging skin on his jaw rooting him in place. Her lips trembled as moisture brimmed beneath her lashes, turning the ancient sovereign's martyrs into empty vanity.
“I swore,” she snapped, her voice carrying over the stones. “You vowed to stand by us! To survive, Zifeng! Not to scatter your ashes! Do you think your sister wants rescue from a corpse? Do you think *I* do?!”
Her anger shattered the cold calculation in his marrow. He had given his word to endure.
From within the jade, a groan like shifting tectonic plates rumbled. “Bah, what’s all this racket? And where’s the vintage? You mortals are endless drama.” Lord Buzhou’s lazy growl carried an edge of disgust. “Ruler of old, that previous scheme was insufferable. Detonate yourself? Tsk. There are finer paths to make a statement, and far sweeter draughts to distill!”
Zifeng steadied his balance, turning his attention to the ornament at his collar. “Lord Buzhou? Finer how?”
“Of course!” Buzhou scoffed. “You think I spent millennia trapped in that rock just to watch you go kaboom? That’s divine essence, right there!” A thread of azure radiance lanced from the talisman toward the crumpled, half-dissipated remnant of the intruder. “An otherworldly husk! The densest lump of astral vitality on this continent! If you ignite your primordial blaze to distill *that* relic into a sovereign liquor…”
Buzhou paused, a thirsty rattle vibrating through the stone. “Then, for three brief minutes, my true vessel steps out! And mark my words, when I step out, the heavens shatter!”
Zifeng stared at the smoldering remains, then glanced at Lin Muyue, whose stare anchored on his chest ornament. Xiaoxiao, still unconscious, lay safely on a makeshift bed of robes. Three minutes. Three minutes against an armada of gods. It was insane. It was perfect.
Channeling his breakthrough realm, Zifeng poured forth bright azure flame, cold and merciless. It enveloped the Warden’s dying essence, compressing it, distilling it. The husk shrieked, a soundless scream of pure agony as its divine form was forcibly condensed, refined, and then, with a final, desperate surge, ripped from reality.
The refined fluid, iridescent and heavy as mercury, flew into Zifeng's palm. He tipped it straight into the talisman.
Buzhou’s roar broke across the entire valley, vibrating through the bedrock and making the descending hulls shudder in midair. The jade ornament swelled, hairline fractures racing across its surface before it tore apart. It unleashed a torrent of primordial origin force that distorted the air. An impossibly vast hand, formed from swirling nebulas and compressed starlight, ripped through the upper ridge, dwarfing the mountain range, the valley below, and the dreadnoughts. A voice as heavy as grinding tectonic plates boomed across the sky, “Ah, refreshing! Let’s have some sport, shall we?!”
The Primordial Titan laughed again, a sound shuddering through Zifeng's ribcage, as massive astral fingers curled around the nearest flagship above.
