The Smuggler's Ledger

The vertical canyon-city of Ostrom is unforgiving. If you lack ration stamps, you starve; if you lack a two-parent household, the state seizes your orphaned kin. Zorina Vesh is a cold, calculating rail-runner, surviving by dodging the Vulkari Guard across the city's treacherous funicular lines. Her concrete goals? Keep her nephew Miren out of the state foundries and find the man who framed her brother for treason. But during a high-speed rooftop chase, Zorina crashes into the office of Kovan Tarsil - the meticulous, unromantic state accountant whose audits have been ruining her smuggling routes. Facing execution or the labor camps, they strike a desperate bargain: a fake marriage. He avoids the bachelor's military draft; she secures Miren's freedom. Told in alternating third-person perspectives, their shared apartment becomes a quiet sanctuary where they silently trade the best cuts of scarce food over stacks of ledgers. But when Kovan risks his pristine career to buy Zorina a rare brass music box she lingered over, their slow-burning respect ignites. As Kovan's audit into missing rations and Zorina's hunt for her brother's killer suddenly merge into one terrifying conspiracy, can their fragile new family survive the explosive fallout?
